For Mike to have won, he should have played: Move Forward, Shoot, Horse.
This way Purple would have stood up, used his Horse in vain, gotten shot and Mike would have won.

There’s a rotating first player, the first player in round 1 starts towards the back to balance the first player advantage.

depends on how you look at it. it's small, short and you always have hand full of action cards. in the original, your hand might get filled with bullets meaning you won't have much play this round, possibly getting even more bullets, since you're not moving. I still prefer the original, but this one has some advantages depending on what you're looking for.
