Back in the late 90's me and a buddy hoped the fence at some school in SD and stumbled upon Sheffey skating there all by himself. I was trying pressure flips off this 2ft tall platform. I finally landed one and Sheffey very quietly said "yeah". Everyone hated pressure flips but now I finally felt validated because "The Chef"' approved!
Idk why foos don't like pressure flips?!
Btw, there's a semi-new thing online where these kids are calling any trick done without popping the tail, a pressure flip?!?! It's used as a derogatory term I guess. Anytime I try to correct them, they argue like they've been skating more than 3 years?! This is my new hill that I'm willing to die on! Who's with me???

A true battle of titans, amazing! Sheffey had the combo slappy combos back in the day for sure, but I suspect both of these legends would have fared just as well, if not better, on a grown-ass-man picnic table. And yes, kids, if you haven't seen Soldier's Story, you know what to do.

I'm from NY, and I remember Sheffey from the Shut days, a full two years before the world discovered him. Then I moved to North County SD near the H-Street stomping grounds, so I got to see firsthand when Sheffey got down with them. I was so proud to be East Coast!
Yo, Willy! I even sessioned with you one time at that one park in RB with all the ledges and the benches (I forget the name), and you bigged me up for fly shit that I was doing and came and introduced yourself to me, which pros definitely did NOT do back in the day. You were the coolest!
Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Loved it! Peace.
Not discounting any of this, but H-Street was South Bay/Chula Vista. I'm sure a few lived up in North County.

@@Tricklarock Word? Hensley lived in Vista, Danny Way in San Marcos, Brennand Sheffeld was in Vista, as was Steve Ortega. Plus, the Cavalry Chapel, the only legal skate spot in Vista--where they used to pull out the ramps every Friday night, and where Gator confessed--all of that was Vista.
Yeah, the team grew (like Donger and John Reeves from the second video were from RB, for example), but the original nucleus was Vista and San Marcos. I lived in Escondido, the next town over: I skated with these cats often, had bros on flow, all. Don't take my word for it, though: go read a Danny Way interview and fact check.

Like you, I moved to SD from the east coast (NC), and never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be hanging/skating with my idols! I know Gator and Danny Way were N.County doods, and I know a lot of companies were based up there. I should've used a question marks at the end of both of those sentences, because I wasn't sure if H-St started up there (which sounds like they pretty much did?) then moved to C.V., or vice-versa?
I'm jealous AF, cuz you got there in the GOLDEN golden days! I was at the next era - early 90s, Maple, Platinum, SRH/SMP days , etc.
It's funny how you mentioned the 'only LEGAL spot to skate...'! People nowadays who occasionally try to resurrect the 'Skateboarding Is Not A Crime' logo, etc, have absolutely NO idea how bad it was in the 80s-early 90s?!?! I know it was bad in CA, but it was even worse in the rest of the country cuz you had these close minded redneck types who just had to take it to the next level! All because it was a 'foreign culture' to them, so all they knew how to do was to hate, and try to get rid of us via law enforcement!!!

Definitely believe you, I had the same experience. Moved from the East Coast (NC), and found myself skating/hanging with my idols. Just wish I got there in the golden golden age like you! I got there in the early 90s, at the 2nd video era you spoke of.
- I wish the people who try to resurrect 'Skateboarding is not a crime' stuff really one just how illegal skating was back then. I went to juvy for running from a cop cuz we were skating at a mall, lol!
