I built a walk in coop about 2 ft off the ground. Windows east and west with an old door with a window to the south. I attached it to the side of my garage so there is lots of north wind protection. Have you thought of putting a saw horse type roost in as a step up to the tall roosts? Doesn't cut down on floor space and easy to remove and spray down when it gets dirty. Adds a vertical element that adds space for chickens to move around in on the cold days.
Loving your new coop. I built my first coop this year, 8'x12' shed with half being the coop and the other half is storage for food and bedding (can also be expanded to house more chickens). I also installed solar panels for lights so I can see them when I check on them and if I need to use tools plus solar powered motion lights to chase off predators as we live in the woods. I also built a 8'x12' covered attached run which is where the food and water are. Because I am also in WI, I also invested in clear tarps to block the wind in the run from the west and north winds during the winter months. This is my first year having chickens, so I am nervous for the winter cold. I have plans right now not to supplement heat, but I know if it gets too cold, that might be out of my hands as my husband is a softy when it comes to animals.
Regarding condensation control, you can always add a passive air inlet. Basically, it's a small vent towards the top of the wall that you can manually open or close. They were really common in houses before modern hvac. You'd have one in each room that you could open if you notice any condensation on the windows.
Love your coop. I do the same here. Deep litter. One window + automatic ventilation + heat area. I added coroplass on the walls. Cheap and easy to clean. Their coop is directly located in there sage enclosure with roof as our winters are long in Canada. I can open the enclosure doors and hop they go for free ranging in our forest. So much fun to look at. Also have water hanging from the roof. I have two food dispensers one in the coop and one in the enclosure. So far they eat but also go free range for insects. I have a German Shepard that is also watching over them day and night. LoveLive my coop. Would love to post pictures here but can’t 🤣
Sounds like you doumg projects like us. We what are property in 2020 it was completely wooded I'm just over 10 acres and we've been doing our best to trying to take trees down to give pastures cuz we have wild mustangs we've got goats we've got chickens we've got ducks we have rabbits we got dogs we've got cats we've got a lot going on on our little home study here and it's taking each and every day one time at a time just to get things completed and checked off of our to-do list and then on top of all that you have your regular upkeep of the homestead which sometimes puts the to-do list on the back burner. We just got our 1st snow yesterday for winter. We have 33 laying hens. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.
We turned an old 3 sided enclosure that was previously used for horses into our chicken coop. We just moved to the property in March, so only got some of it completed. We are ND where it is 🥶 cold, so we hung canvas tarps over the opening, opening them during the day. We had purchased a pre-built coop from TSC so they have a place to go at night and lay eggs. The plan next yr is to get a little insulation put in, the front wall built with a auto coop door and a person Suze door, built nest box area and roosting bars. We don't free range, but they have a large area enclosed by dog kennel panels ( which we have been getting off FB for dirt cheap). We currently have 6 chickens and plan for more next yr !!
I would lower the roosts and get them about 1 foot away from the wall. For my chickens, they would not use the taller roost until I made them a ramp. I have Buff Orpingtons.
Hey just a suggestion bring your roost bars about 8 in from back wall helps them able to roost better and your wAlls will be cleaner other than that you both are great love your channel
i would move the roost bars out further from the wall. with my coops, i have 2 roost bars,, 1 is about 3 foot from the floor and the other is about 5 foot from the floor so they can hop from the lower one to the higher one. of course they are offset so they dont poop on the lower roost bar. i too put windows in for summer time air flow. hubby actually built one walk-in coop last yr with a covered run, then chicken math happened, lol, so he built the second walk-in coop with its own covered run with the roof line being the same. the coops are like bookends with the covered runs in the middle if that makes sense. once the newer girls were big enough, we removed the hardware cloth between the 2 runs and opened it all up so they can all be together. i wish i could post pictures cuz i dont know if i'm explaining it well enough. we call it the Taj MahCoop
Gorgeous coop! we just got our first flock this summer and we build an 8x4 coop our of mostly recycled material. Its not a walk in and very red neck looking hah but it does a good job for our girls. If chicken math catches up with us and we continue with chickens we certainly aim to upgrade to something like this!
Both of the coops we've built were basically 4' square blocks, built off the ground so the kids had cover, and a place for their dust bath, etc. Now I wish we'd built at least one that was walk in, so there would be less mud when it rains a lot and maybe a bit more comfortable for them. For ventilation, did you build the coop with soffits at all? I didn't see vents that were real obvious. That's always been a tough one for us, being in Tennessee, the summers especially get real humid, but winters can go either way.
Hi, love your channel, been binge watching. We are 1st time chicken parents in the spring-God willing. We are converting a 9.5’ x 16’ walk in wood shed into a chicken coop. We got some second hand storm doors and vintage windows to put up. We are looking forward to seeing how you build out your run. We have lots of foxes, eagles, hawks and rats around, so we appreciate any tips on predator proofing. Ty! :)
Congrats on your new coop. Pretty sure there is more than 600 bucks in that though...LOL. But you did say you were building a house too, so a lot of the lumber could be scrap from the other projects.
Coop door is so funny, I just ordered the same brand today. I went with the presidential model to save 10 bucks And it makes me laugh. I mean laugh really hard every time I think about it. The chickens have a president. Ha, so fitting to rule Chickens.
We built a coop similar to yours, 8x10, I think. But ours is a foot off the ground, so the kids have extra room to get out of the sun, rain, or snow when they’re confined in the run. Our windows are about the same, just smaller 😢, put in front and back for cross ventilation. We have a rooftop ventilation across the ridge, just like our house, and a couple of soffits are open with hardware cloth attached to keep predators out. We keep the food outside, but I may bring inside the coop when the temps drop. We are in NW Wisconsin, so it gets coooold! Oh and we did insulate the walls just for extra warmth. And we painted it barn red, with white trim and a black door and roof. Thanks for sharing! 😊🐓
Thanks for all the info, your videos are the best! We are going to build a coop soon on the property we bought in SD and we want something like this. Do you have any kind of plans for your build that you'd be able to share? Ty!
So sad to hear about Reptar. This may be a dumb question. But what do you do with chickens when they pass away? I love your videos and have learned a lot. We plan on getting chicken this spring. Thanks!
Great coop and useful comments, I see this one is not raised off the ground ? Any reason Im just in the process of sorting my coop and run out for our 1 st chickens in the spring, I’m wary about things like red mites and diseases so any advice appreciated
Do you feel that the roll out nest box you have is secure from predator's? I see the latch that secures it but I wonder how secure it is. Also, do your eggs ever freeze? I really want to get one of these nest boxes for my coop.
2 ft roost bar from ground then the next 2ft keeps them from getting bumble foot from to much drama on feet from jumping down since doing this no bumble foot just a suggestion
I was just wondering should you put a heater in the coop or not, some people say yes some say no. First winter with my lady’s not sure what to do here about 1mile from Lake Erie Ohio
Excellent coop. I am trying to make one. Your videos really helped me with the ideas. I have a question like in this coop with deep litter do u have problems with the rats coz here in india where i live we have sort of rat problem. Really liked your videos and love the way you explain and talks. 😊
I'm not sure if your question was a general question or referring to the chicken that she mentioned that had passed away. She called it a cross beak chicken because the top and bottom of the beak don't line up, the ends sit side-by-side when the beak is closed.
My chicken bunker hen house is done except for some painting, its a 8x8 elevated steel reinforced block and concrete coop that you can stand in, i designed it for deep litter, it has a porcelain tile floor, so i can keep water and feed inside because its water proof, im building the run and the most expensive high tech watering system for any coop on TH-cam lol, its going to rain harvest, store 350 gallons and pump water on solar, my nest box is also solar, i designed it for future upgrades, it was completely fabricated by me, its really nice, if you like crazy chicken coop ideas 💡, i have a couple of video's, but when you ever get the chance, check out my nest box video, its built very differently than anything you will ever see 😂
Pam here…your girls are really growing up and getting so pretty! I bet you’re excited for them to start laying! Do you train them to a sound or a call you have for them?
How cold has it been there in Wisconsin? I've been raising 4 chicks that are now 8 weeks old. But not sure if they're ready to go outside since we're getting nights in the 20°s. What you think?
I’m in NW Wisconsin. Got 8”of snow on Halloween, temps down to the mid-low 20’s. Same deep bedding in the coop, covered the windows with plastic, plus around the lower part of their run. Our girls free range as well, and they did not like the snow at all! Threw down some hay around the run, added some scratch - got them out!
I'll post relevant updates here for ya. Thanks for watching!

I think that’s very likely the issue!
@@OakAbode Just a thought. I love your coop. 🥰
Hello! Thanks for the great video and inspiration! Question: do eggs freeze in the roll out? and how to keep eggs from freezing?
Add in branches or steps they can climb up higher
I appreciate you taking the time to share this information.

We had a chicken pass away on halloween morning. Fiona was 9 1/2 yrs. Love the chicken coop❤❤❤

This is great! That’s how our first coop was too - I think the chickens loved them both the same ☺️
How high should you put the nest box

Nice coop, chickens seem to like it!!!!
What type of feed do you like to feed your hens?
When do you know if there old enough to free range
Congrats on your new coop. Pretty sure there is more than 600 bucks in that though...LOL. But you did say you were building a house too, so a lot of the lumber could be scrap from the other projects.
Great video and coop, but did I miss how big it is?
oh my gosh i am so sorry that reptar passed she was probably my fav chicken

Can you make a funny challenge trying to catch chickens? lol 🤣❤
looking good!!

Windows well worth it for all the reasons you stated
Outdoor food storage has been ravaged by bears here. Ps. My girls greatly enjoyed a repurposed picture window😊..
@OakAbode what did you do for a floor? Or are those walls just free standing?
Hi, is this your most current coop that you’ve built? Trying to decide on the elevated vs walk-in coop.
So sad to hear about Reptar. This may be a dumb question. But what do you do with chickens when they pass away? I love your videos and have learned a lot. We plan on getting chicken this spring. Thanks!
Great coop and useful comments, I see this one is not raised off the ground ? Any reason

What type of wood did you use to build the coop?

Do you still use the raised chicken coop from your other video? I was looking for an update and found this video but seems like a different coop
What’s a cross feed chicken? Freedom Ranger/Cornish mix?
I'm not sure if your question was a general question or referring to the chicken that she mentioned that had passed away. She called it a cross beak chicken because the top and bottom of the beak don't line up, the ends sit side-by-side when the beak is closed.

What is the floor made from? Wood?
I get to build one next year. I'm "allowed" 5 chickens, and I'm learning chicken math. Love your channel.
Haha! This one is actually a dirt floor, which I prefer with the deep litter method. But you can use it with a wood floor too. Thanks!
How come your automatic door is not opened all the way?? Very nice coop ! I prefer a walk in coop, that is what I have
Aww it’s cute nice 🤍👼🐥🐣
Yes yes yes
How cold has it been there in Wisconsin? I've been raising 4 chicks that are now 8 weeks old. But not sure if they're ready to go outside since we're getting nights in the 20°s. What you think?
I’m in NW Wisconsin. Got 8”of snow on Halloween, temps down to the mid-low 20’s. Same deep bedding in the coop, covered the windows with plastic, plus around the lower part of their run. Our girls free range as well, and they did not like the snow at all! Threw down some hay around the run, added some scratch - got them out!
Dark color paint should help heat it up.
Yep, that’d be a big problem in the summer!
Having a dog is a definite intimidator for hawks.
Nice
We have a similar coop. Our issue is with wild birds getting in and eating food and pooping all over🙃. Any ideas? They come in the automatic door
What little jerks! I’ve never encountered this before, how frustrating!
What about a fake rubber snake? Not sure if it’ll scare your chickens but it’s worth a try!
🙋♂️👍❤️
Lol I meant trauma l lol
