  • www.oceandiscovery.ca As part of the scientific dive team, we release the octopuses from the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre every 6 months. This allows an incredible experience as they quickly adapt back into their native environment. Divers included Paula Romagoa, Daniel Wuitchik, Alisa and Tyler Preston, plus Tina Kelly was our awesome shore support.

Referred here by Sy Montgomery's mention in _The Soul of an Octopus_. Absolutely fascinating creatures, and The Dude is a spectacular example. Thanks for sharing!

I work there, and we do everything by the book. The octopuses have little to no human contact, and all the water is pumped into the center directly.

Wow... I've been fascinated by octopi since I was a kid, even had a little pet one when I was 12! It was/is an obsession, really, they never cease to amaze me- I have never seen such amazing footage ( no pun intended) of the suckers on the GPO.... wow!

Plural is "octopuses" since the word is of Greek origin.

In Canada things are different. Animals in captivity can be released back into the wild with the proper approval from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and only after a full veterinary examination. We are a CAZA accredited institution and we stick to the strict regulations set out by CAZA and DFO.

I also remember hearing about him in The Soul of an Octopus! Quite the grand creature for sure!
Interesting walk he's got. Don't think I've seen one walk with front arms raised like that. I wonder if he finds the substrate of that spot distasteful.

Very cool critters. This one clearly wasn't people shy. He seemed quite comfortable with the people swimming around him. Very intelligent creatures which are capable of gratitude and affection towards humans they've bonded with. It angers me that they are such a popular food item in so many countries. They are killed by the millions for sushi. Such a crime to kill creatures with the intelligence and emotional capacity these gentle creatures possess. It's like killing very smart dogs or cats for food.

With the music, you are making an innocent octopus look like DJ Octavio from Splatoon

Dude seems very comfortable with “walking” the bottom. Is this a normal behavior for these big boys or just Dude? He also seemed to enjoy your company and was NOT camera shy! Was l correct is thinking that in one of the pics that Dude went over one of the divers like in a game of leap frog?
    Live long Big Guy!

  • @ruthlewis6678

How about playing a little Vivaldi on the next video? The Dude is scary enough without the ominous music! The Dude needs an agent to elevate his image. Yes he is unattractive but I'll bet he is really smart.

go ahead and justify it anyway you like, in most places and circumstances it is illegal to release native captives back to nature after having been in captivity. At least thats how we do it in the usa, and being that this is a "scientific" establishment Id think that theShaw Center would knowhow dangerous this is...
