  • A short film about Bomma Kalu made by Miles Trevelyan-Johnson with narration in Malayalam by Krishna Renjini P L. This film and soundtrack was made in just four days, with recordings by the band Ripples On The Pond, for an original background score featuring the Malayalam playback singer Anitha Shaiq.
Bomma Kalu is a toy festival celebrated in Southern India. Some of the dolls in this film are 60 to 70 years old and have been passed down through the generations, stored in a cupboard throughout the year, and then put on display once a year for the 9 nights and 10 days of the Navaratri festival. Viewing art as Divinity, the beautiful clay figurines of gods and goddesses are worshipped throughout the festival. The term Bomma means 'Doll' and the term 'Kolu' means 'giving audience in a royal court', now come to be understood as simply giving audience.
When people come to a person's house to see the Bomma Kolu, usually they are given prasad (the offering given to God that day), kumkum and a small bag of gifts. These are only given to girls and married women. In the evenings, a "kuthuvilakku" (small lamp) is lit, in the middle of a decorated "kolam"(Rangoli), before the Kolu and devotional hymns and shlokas are chanted. After performing the puja, the food items that have been prepared are offered to the goddesses.
