  • In my longest model video to date, we build, paint camouflage, detail, and weather the Modelcollect 1/72 scale B-52G Stratofortress kit #MDO 722202. Modelcollect aftermarket correction/upgrade parts that include the nose, tail, and flap sections are incorporated. Additionally, we substitute the supplied BUFF markings with emblems from the Caracal B-52G/H decal set #72077. This is Project #19 and the 6th overall Viewer’s Choice winning request. It is a behemoth of an amateur model undertaking!

      @@MaxAfterburner try looking at viewer retention instead, it's shows people's preference more accurately, as on can't know the amount of commentary before clicking on the video (and therefore registering a view)

      @@MaxAfterburner Thanks. I guess everyone is different. I like watching videos like yours to learn tips and tricks. I want to hear you explain why you are doing the things you do, mistakes to avoid, tricks/tips to achieve certain effects and so on. Just watching you build the model with little commentary is...I dunno...not much point. Just my $0.02 though. If you get more views the less you talk then I guess that is the way to go and I am the odd duck.

    The G had the straight turbojet P&W J57-P-43WB engines (only the H used the TF-33). I fueled Gs at Seymour Johnson and Barksdale in the early ‘70s. According to a reference, 58-0218 was at Seymour around that time, so I probably serviced it. I built the Monogram D model back in the late ‘70s. The tail # was flown on a Linebacker 2 mission to the Kinh No railroad yards by a friend of mine in a modeling club and a courageous American, Lt. Col. Tom Lebar from Wyoming. The old lady is now supposed to stick around until 2050. That would be (wait for it) 95 years in service. The newest H model will be 88. If that is not the greatest tribute ever to the Boeing company, or any airplane company, I can’t imagine what is. Great job on the build!

    Beautiful job. This camo pattern is the best I have ever seen. Love the B-52 doesn't matter the model letter. They are awesome bombers. Not just because of the bomb loads they are capable of dropping. But just the awe inspiring size and the distinctive sound and the Black engine smoke. All tell a person that something big is going to happen. Mind blowing power.

    A lot of nostalgia with this video for me. For one, my dad was stationed to Carswell in the 60s as part of the USN close-out on the F-111B. So we were there when AF Reserve flew all the B-36s west to AZ. If memory serves, there were two air refuel wings and a B-52 wing at Carswell back then, and they would have to Alert every so often. Not always at the same time, either. But, you got to where you could hear the difference between KC-135 and BUFFS.
    Also, some ancient memories of the old Monogram B-52 (I think it was a D but might have been a B). That fuselage was two pieces, just two pieces--an intimidating slab of plastic to rival the wings. Took _two_ cans of Testor's Silver (or two of the black) to cover that bird, too.

    The 'H' model full-scale 1:1 is shown in the live video. It has fans for engines as well as a few other spotting features. I spent a few hours (USAF '63-67) on the 'G' back in '66 doing nav-doppler radar repair (30151B, 30154). The model kit correcty is a 'G'. The finished work is museum quality and best I've seen. Thanx for showing. 👍🏻👍🏻

      Hi Bob P, thanks! Yes it is the B-52H at the start, but I believe most viewers realize that I used this opening footage as illustrative since the B-52G has been out of service for quite some time-long before the higher quality video imagery we can obtain today.

    Loring AFB (northernmost Maine) and its 42nd Bomb Wing B-52Gs are tragically and sadly gone (due to BRAC), but remembered by the thousands who served there and the economically and socially devastated-when-Loring-closed surrounding communities (e.g., Caribou and Limestone). A tour of the once base reveals most of its buildings are now gone and it is as quiet as the wind, so unlike the 24 hour bustle when Loring was one of the premiere (closest of all to the Soviet homeland) and largest SAC bases.

  • @ItsConstitutional
    @ItsConstitutional 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    That initial starting on this video was a "Quick start" by use of Starter Cartridges verses a Normal start by an external Hobart Pneumatic system that uses forced air to turn the engine turbine blades to starting speed. The Starter Cartridge is a Canister packed with gun powder about the size of a large coffee can and is installed on each engine on Alert Aircraft (nuclear loaded) So at a moments notice, the pilots can start the aircraft quickly without external power, by a simple electronic switch that can start either one engine or all 8 engines at once. Using Starter Cartridges are also a bitch to clean before another cartridge can be installed to bring the aircraft to a "Ready Status" again. I may have worked on this Aircraft with tail number 218...I was based at Mather AFB California from 1981-85. Nice work btw!

      totalpkgpainting Hobart's are power only. They don't provide air for ground start. For that, you'd either need an air cart, with either a Hobart or md 3, or a -60. -60s being gas turbines, which provide air and power. Carts AREN'T gunpowder, that burns far too quickly and powerfully, they would blow the breech. Breeches ARE a pain in the ass to clean, to ! Specially after QC stops you from using easy bake, which works excellent, and instead make you use the Mil H approved freon cleaner, which SUCKS ! NOT gunpowder, they are made of a much slower burning solid fuel, roughly the same as say the SRBs on the shuttle. Made either by Olin or Morton Thiokal ( the people who made the shuttle SRBs ). B 52s by the way, have only 2 flap positions, full up or full down. No ailerons either, just spoilers. And the B 52s no longer stand nuclear alert, since SAC stood down, but they still do cart starts, practice generations and MITO launches, just to keep in practice for an EWO generation and launch.

    I grew up less than a half mile from Barksdale Airforce base and I remember this color scheme well as we would pass these bombers everyday. I am amazed at how you captured the colors and they are spot on. As always this has been a great video and I enjoyed watching your work. You are giving the Europeans on TH-cam a run for their money in the model building department. Thanks for taking the time to make this video for us to enjoy.

    The Buff was the last bomber to shoot down fighter aircraft. During Line Backer, two different D models each shot down MIG-21s with their quad fifties. They both wear large red stars on top of their vertical stabilizers for those kills. One is on a stand at the east entrance to the Air Force Academe just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado and the other one is in a museum somewhere. I worked both at Carswell AFB days after they shot down the MIGs, when they returned for routine major maintenance. I worked Ds at Carswell and F, G, and H models at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. At that time, the F, G, and H models had 20 mm cannons instead of quad fifties. The D model was the largest of the Buffs in length, width, and height and carried the heaviest payload. After the D model, they moved the operator for the tail gun up front with the EWO because, in high altitude turbulence, the tail of the plane whipped vertically terribly with sudden travels of up to 20 to 30 feet and shook the living crap out of the guy. In the Ds the tail gunner was the only crew member who did not have an ejection seat. His ejection system blew off the tail of the gunner station and he just unfastened his seat belt and jumped out. Thanks for the model build. :-)

    Great video. I truly enjoyed the info notes during the build. I will add a few of my own personal experience notes. I was a weapons loader at Barskdale AFB from 93-97. It was an amazing experience and one I will never forget. After I first arrived I was assigned to help remove the last 20mm tail gun that we had on base. I was green as hell at that time but that was fucking awesome. I received multiple commendation awards for missions that we loaded and flew and came back empty. (wink wink). The amount of conventional weapons that the plane can hold is mind numbing but the real deal is when the plane is fitted the with big boys (nukes). When our entire base would practice nuke warfare readiness, there was nothing more awesome and intimidating than looking down the flightline and seeing over 30 planes loaded for full tilt ass whooping. Our squadron chief would brief us all and end with this statement. "When we generate we become a 3rd world power. There is the US, Russia and Barksdale AFB". We will always be second to none and we will always have air superiority. So sleep well at night people. Even if we have zipperheads wanting to send us "Christmas" gifts. Cheers.
