I'm a former Royal Marines Commando who served in afghan on herrick 9 back in 08/09, went on this particular helicopter a few times for air assaults. Picked up this model today and will be giving it the paintjob for that time period, can't wait to make a start on it.
Hi, Nice build. I'm an ex HC1 engineer (and been involved all the way to the Mk6) and I can see that Airfix have obviously cut a few corners and reused moulds from other variants (HC2 and later). As an example the 'wiring and pipes' at the rear of the cabin weren't visible on the HC1, there was a variety grey plastic cover panels over them that were a right nightmare to fit. These were removed from HC2 onwards so that hydraulic leaks could be easily identified. Similarly the rectangular panel on the right side (same area) is the 'maintenance panel,' that was introduced from the HC2 onwards. Another little bug bear I have with a lot of these kits is that the cabin seat back straps cover the cabin windows, this was (and still is) a big no-no as the cabin windows can be jettisoned in an emergency but the straps positioned there would then impede escape. Many of these things is just me being picky as I worked on them for years so have detailed knowledge that I appreciate the layman wouldn't be aware of. All in all excellent build from your perspective but Airfix could / should have made a few tweaks to the interior.
Well knowing that the reason kit's cost me much is down to the cost of the molds this kit must be a bit cheaper as they've used some old ones! 😅 of coarse not that's why I stopped buying airfix years ago
Rotor drop is wrong as well for the HC1, rotors shouldn't bend along the length. Only at the joint. Makes you question the research for Airfix as most of their kits have accuracy issues. Fantastic finish though mate.
@@modelheaven5471 HC1 originally came with metal blades which looked different at the root end (they were 'squared off), these were replaced with the current style composite blades fairly early on, they taper from the inboard trailing edge to the root (as per the ones fitted here). The composite ones are a bit more flexible and can have a bit of sag to them but I know what you mean as they do look slightly odd but that may be down to the rigidity of the plastic used in the kit.
Thanks so much for cutting right to the build and not wasting everyone's time showing the parts and the box. Your pleasant narration is also much better than a musical soundtrack. Finally, great balance between showing and explaining technique and not dragging any one step on too long. Your videos should be required viewing for anybody thinking of doing build videos. Now excuse me while I go subscribe to your channel. 😊
Thank you very much! Really appreciate it, some of my newer videos do have some music in the background - so I’d be intrigued to see what you think of them!
I’m in the cadet force and it’s really cool that we have the amazing opportunity to go up in these amazing aircraft every now and then. Thanks for making this model look so good!
The Chinook is my favorite aircraft. I have built Trumpeters 1/35 CH-47A and that kit is massive. I had to hang it because I didn't have the shelf space. I think 1/72 is a perfect size kit for this aircraft, not too big and not too small. 1/48 would probably be okay, but still on the large side. At first, I couldn't comprehend the dusty rose color you were using, but in the end, yeah, it was a good choice! However, I would have left the triangles slightly more prominent. I think hairspray chipping parts of the triangles would have been my approach. I also think you did an appropriate amount of weathering. Many modelers love the weathering process so much that their end results are often unrealistic and overdone. In the end, you've got a lovely build of which you can be proud.
Him:makes sure to paint the wires and all the possible dirty areas making it look as accurate as possible. Me:paints the interior all one colour, gives the pilot and seat some detail, doesn’t bother to do any detail for the instrument panel and then calls it a day.😳 this was a really good build by the way!
Wow! That was very artistic in the assembly of the CH-47 Chinook! I had a few rides in these great machines when I served in the US Army and now seeing these beauties fly around still gets my heart racing and to see how much care and effort you put into bringing out this model to make it they way you did and to show me how and what you did it with is a lesson that is priceless! Another great build mate! I've got a soft spot for the chinook I used to live near RAF odiham where they're based and they fly quite low over my house all the time.
Really nice. You’ve made a great job of that. I like the weathering. I was going to do mine as Bravo NoWonder but seeing your model makes me think that a lean, mean desert machine may be the way to go!
Some great work. I love the attention to detail you put into your builds and how you opt for the weathered look rather than the 'fresh from the factory' look.
The blades roots drooped from the hinge point a small amount, but the blades themselves hardly drooped/bent at all. I seem to recall that these composite blades were less droopy than the metal ones - but it was a long time ago....

Sorry for so many questions I just want it to look good ,I'm just struggling with the colours choice .thanks and have a great Christmas 😊😊

I live ten miles from RAF Odiham....Chinhooks make my house shake every time they fly over.....Superb aircraft....
I had three fly over my house the other day ( that distinctive thumping sound only a chinook makes feels you with awe) 😎
They have one of the best sounds in the world!! (In my opinion at least)
I used to live near there only saw 2 chinooks 😭
Love seeing them near enough everyday near Anstey park, especially as they’re always low and it’s cool as you can sometimes see the people inside 😂
Spent a bit of time on and around Chinooks. Magnificent beasts. 🇬🇧🏴
My CH.1 sits proudly on my Diarama😊
Airfix have come a long way in terms of fit. Those jigs are great tooling that I'm surprised a lot of other kit brands haven't picked up.

So Hannants has moved to London now (sorry, but since the Brexit I wasn´t following it) Been to Lowestoft back in 1987.1988 when I was at TTTE Cottemore (GAF) a couple of times, Did I enjoy it? Still got modells that I bought there, Great built of the Chinook.
So there’s actually two hannants! Lowestoft is still the warehouse and London is more of a shop! Great to hear you enjoyed it👌🏻
Can I ask as a newbie where can I buy the masks for the cockpit and the round windows ? Fantastic build by the way you made it look relatively easy 😊
Try searching up manufacturers like Eduard - they are a good place to start
What did you use to drill the holes?
A pin vice! You can get them on eBay for like £5
Can I ask s question please ,I'm new to model making and I only have tamiya or vallejo paints ,will they be suitable for this model as I have a range of colours in both makes ,but I don't know how to compare them with the humberol for colours choice ? Also I need to put a 0 .2 needle in my air brush and a psi of 15 ? Sorry for so many questions I just want it to look good ,I'm just struggling with the colours choice .thanks and have a great Christmas 😊😊
Really nice build! Just wondering about the stand you used for the build - could you tell me the brand?
Thank you sir! No problem, check out EBMA Hobby, you’ll find it on there👌🏻
What did u use to clean of the dry panel lines
Not 100% what you mean here, could you elaborate?👌🏻
Seats block the windows?
They do… perhaps a slight moulding inaccuracy from Airfix😅
@@machmodels Nope - they actually do that.
