    Boy, this video is as controversial as the oil debate. The standard issued VW jack works perfect and as you mentioned you need to have a solid frame. But I used it only for changing a flat tire on the road, if that's all you have. For shop work like pulling the engine, another debate would be which end do you lift first? I always used a floor jack and lifted the front end first. Again on a solid frame as you mentioned. Then lifting the rear to keep a level balance, I use one of the do not lift points you pointed out, so I'm not trying to lift one side of the car while the front end is on jack stands. I lifted from the engine to get the height to put the jack stands on the torsion rails needed to be able to slide the engine out of the engine area and sideways under the fender well area. I still use the floor jack when removing the engine, I count on the jacks plate to swivel when pull the engine loose from the mounts and transmission shaft. Wiggle, wiggle. I had no luck using a motorcycle lift for this. Because some motorcycle lifts only rise up to 11 inches and some go 33 inches. I got the cheap lift....wrong one. A floor jack also has limits, which mine happens to lift to 36 inches, and then with a flat board on the jack I get an extra half inch. I tried using the motorcycle lift to get the engine out, but had no luck because of no wiggle, wiggle play. Using the motorcycle lift and lifting the engine to mount the engine on a stand or close to the stand's mounting height helps. I would like to see your experience on the Motorcycle lift. Great video and on a subject that no one has covered that I know of. I think this is helpful, especially for someone new to working on beetles or any vehicle, safety is important. (HF) had the faulty jack stands and might have been corrected by now.

      Thanks for posting my friend! I have to put that motorcycle jack together, I got a little behind here. I remember using the factory jackpot on my 68 when I was a young kid. Of course, just to change a tire like you said. But everything was brand new. I just tried to caution people that don’t know any better now,and end up with a little incident. Lol I hope you’re doing well my friend.

    I like the two tone red and beige look myself. If not for the factory paint status of my '72 I would do that scheme on mine. I just can't bring myself to get rid of the happy yellow. Don't go with black, especially if Heather doesn't like it. Save that for another vehicle.

    Great topic and great video! I picked the same jacking spots on my super beetle convertible as the standard super - as you showed, so I feel better now. lol It's always good to get confirmation. One point on the jack stands, is that they now REQUIRE the extra pin on the lever operated stands. It might be rare, but the ones you showed under the front, did not appear to have the extra pin (just imagine laying underneath and accidentally kicking one of the levers - down it goes).

    • @vayabroder729
      @vayabroder729 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      At least mine lock in place and they don’t go down unless you pull it up while turning the lever.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t know that most of the stands came with a pin now. Which is a nice addition. The ones that were under the front of the car, I have had for quite some time. They do make me nervous. I’ll be honest. I should probably get a second set that are more safe. Thank you so much for chiming in.

    Hey Slade! I have some questions about wheels. I'm looking to turn my 72 into an overland/road trip adventure rig and want to replace the beat up aftermarket wheels currently on it. Im aware class 11 has some pretty solid wheels but my question is if they're the best for about 75/25 road/gravel mix. I ask because it seems rally cars all run some pretty reliable gravel wheels that are similar but differ from the class 11 sets, and with the regulation of the 11s whether or not they're the best they could be. What are the advantages of running a VW specific wheel as apposed to modifying the bug for some wrc type rally wheels. Thanks! (I've been looking at a set of BRAID WINRACE TA for example)
