I discovered this in my public library when I was 12 years old. Never looked back. It is a completely singular work. Titus Groan sets the stage for Gormenghast...which is the peak of the work. I've lost count of how many times I've re-read this.

Interesting... I may give the second volume a try shortly... TG is definitely a "singular" work...

@@Scottmbradfield I can't recommend it enough...all the poetry and hyperbole of the first but also a pure thriller!

@@MrWeezer55 OK you sold me. I really enjoyed much of TG but it was pretty aimless in passages... more soon! s

Can't second this enough! Found this book around the same age and then went on to Gormenghast, the book I credit with teaching me english. It's a wonder.

Could be my favourite opening paragraph of any book - maybe tied with "The Haunting of Hill House".

The opening chapters are especially good, I love those tours through inside and outside of castle...

Peake's Gormenghast books are among my all-time favorite works of fiction. My parents owned those paperback editions of all three volumes when I was a child, and the evocative cover art by Bob Pepper and the equally intriguing drawings by Peake himself within whetted my curiosity. I didn't actually read the novels until I was approaching adolescence, and I fell in love with Peake's singular style and unforgettable powers of description. The moods and atmospheres the author conjures are simply magical. The world of Gormenghast became an integral, beloved part of my aesthetic repertoire, and I became wont of referring to wet autumn days with their bracing temperatures as "Gormenghastly".

Yeah, the passages on the caste as autumn are especially lovely...

I don't think you can be too old for it. It's not a young person's fantasy... s
