What happens to solar panels when its cloudy? We had the same question... after being bombarded with ads recently about going solar IN THE WINTER, when it is inevitably cloudy, and the sun is at a low angle, we really just. wanted to answer the questions of just how much power can they produce on cloudy days?

After rain and the sun comes out blazing, i get very close to the rated power from my panels. nice video, Greetings from Jamaica.

It also depends on where you live. I'm in Tampa my 400 watt q cells will get 400 plus watts in winter when its 60 degrees and perfectly sunny. They will only get 350 in summer when perfectly sunny. When its between 60-70 degrees they will over produce on a cold winter day (60-70 degrees) Not sure about temps below that have not seen lower temps during the daytime. Still way better off in summer because of the length of the day versus winter. Great video!

Thanks for this instructive video. I have been debating about installing solar panels on my 3-1/2 in 12 pitched roof; 14 (420W) PVs facing East and 12 facing West. I'm up at the 45th parallel (in Wisconsin) and the panels, obviously, can't be tilted to face the low winter sun. I'd be happy to get 20% of summer output. Anything is better than nothing when the power is out, which happens fairly often.

Would be cool to see a video with a larger array of panels

I have bi facial panels mounted vertical in the open ,465w rated peaked at 569w, 105w with full overcast and rain. This winter running 12kw solar in overcast 2600w minimum 4 hours tapering close to dawn and dusk. When the sun is behind the mountain 1600w, insane performance so far, I also have a few ideas to boost it further. Jinko Solar JKM465M-7RL3-TV 465W, Bifacial x18 (+2 Aug) and 6 x Thornova Solar- TS-BG72(550w) - Bifacial coming in Aug, I hope the 550's overclock but in case they do not it will be 3.3kw in a 3kw input, np 200 volts under max and can go 150% input. By December predicted results could mean a drastic change in solar performance for people living in an area where 100 straight overcast days with 30 hours of sun happens. The ultimate goal is 14kw on an overcast winter solstice @ 50th parallel.

More tests on cloudy (winter) days, angle, different panels etc this was interesting. While the production is "low" there IS production, and many need more energy in the winter.

Try living in West Wales, I'm getting a fraction of what you see on a cloudy day.
Second dullest place in Europe at 1045hrs of sun per year.
But in late June when the sun is out, I see more than 100% stc rating.

On a cloudy day my 525w panels produce 59v and 15w is this normal as the voltage is high i was expecting more amps and watts

You say a perfect day won't even do 200w. Stick some mirrors on it. You'll get way more than 200w.
You should do a destructive test on one and see how much power you can concentrate out of it with mirrors/mylar before it cooks. I'm guessing 150%. Would be curious though.

One thing I’d love to see is mismatched solar panels set up in series and parallel. Different voltages and watts. See if it’s effective or not

What if you had the two 100-watt panels in series on the cloudy day? Would that increase the voltage past 11V?

gotta way overpanel then. In my view one has to work with the minimum and then any extra is bonus. Every case is different though, space, budget, needs, angles, location etc.

@segundacuenta726 in the summer I can't give it away 😂😂 5500watt for a system in the UK is considered on the big side for most houses. But luckily we have flexible tariffs. So I just charge my batteries 20kwh in the night. Use it during the day

Im not 100% sure about your info on a 100 watt panel not exceeding 100 watts. I have 4 100 watt renogy glass solar panels and the highest ive seen a single panel output was 129 watts. Its normal for all 4 to exceed 400 watts around noon on sunny days!

@@lawrencedavidson6195 No he's right. That's just the rating. Look up concentrated solar. If you concentrate more solar at the panel (ie with mirrors), you'll exceed the rated capacity. Not good for the panel. But it's very real.
