I bought it immediately. Jimmy is one of my main inspirations for playing jazz guitar. By the way, on the shermusic page there is a special link for people in Europe and the UK. I purchased the digital PDF version from there, got it without any problems. Thank you Jon.
Thank you Jon Raney for realising this Treasure ! This is a very Valuable edition and addition to Jazz education Material for all Musicians . Not limited to Guitarists. It is unfortunately not so common to have published materials from the great Masters of the Golden era. Jimmy Raney was not only a pioneer on the new instrument ( electric jazz guitar in modern jazz ), but a true master musician possessing many refined and Unique qualities .. The Book is very well put together .. In addition your development with the Material is of true excellence. A great asset to all University Jazz departments, and Musicians of all instruments.
This is wonderful. I loved discovering Jimmy when I first got into jazz in the 70s, then listening to Doug coming on to the scene in the 80s. Jimmy had a special touch on the guitar that was unique. The book looks really good.
Amazing ! Your dad was my greatest discovery in jazz guitar along with your brother . Thank you Jon ! I will order it for sure ! Greetings from Croatia !
Wonderful job keeping the legacy of your father alive! I will be ordering my copy right away. Your father’s album “The Master” is one of the greatest jazz guitar recordings ever made. His use of space has never been equaled. Thank you again for sharing this with the world!
@@raneyjr I’m looking forward to learning from the master-just as Doug did. Their synergy on the guitar duets was amazing. Your contribution to the jazz guitar canon is invaluable. Thank you!
@@raneyjr …. will take me the rest of my life to absorb this material! Your dad and brother were innovative Jazz Guitar luminaries who did not get the full credit they deserved IMO. Their liquid tone, virtuoso speed (while never sacrificing musicality) and ability to hang with the masters of Jazz remains a landmark in music history.
Fantastic that the book is finished. I'm curious. Jimmy Raney is one of my favorites because of his beautiful melodic lines. Somewhere in the early eighties I had lessons from him at home with Gerry Teekens of Criss Cross Records. He toured the Netherlands with Doug at the time. Jimmy showed me how to play on Gone with the Wind.
blackjawreen Thanks so much. I became friendly with Pat in 2016. You might be interested in this page which show Dad's influence on Wes and other greats www.jonraney.com/archives/everybody-digs-jimmy/
I've been waiting a month for my physical copy of your book to arrive from Sher Music. Regardless, I am excited to dive into those pages. Rhythm is the key to playing jazz convincingly, and you were the first person I found on the internet who spoke about poly rhythm and poly meter simultaneously. Hopefully your book moves the needle in changing the jazz education paradigm--we need to recenter rhythm in our jazz studies, no matter what instrument we play :)
Gee whiz. a month? that's strange. Hope it's not too much longer. if it continues let me know, I will ask the publisher about it. Re: the rest thanks so much. Did you post on my website a while back? the comments are similar to someone who posted. Best Jon
Hi Jon, I read an interview with John Scofield a few years ago and he said that he saw the video of your dad playing Billy's Bounce and he sent it to Pat Metheny. I don't think your dad could get much higher praise than that.
@@davidsheriff9274 yeah John mentioned that to me and also Pat’s response. I ended up putting them on the Everybody Dig Jimmy tab on my Raney Legacy website, www.jonraney.com
@@raneyjr That would be so fantastic. There are soooo many people who still are not aware of Doug's amazing playing. When they "discover" him for the first time the reaction is always the same: "How can I have never heard his playing before!" Your book (Including transcriptions) will really help a lot when it comes to getting his name mentioned more when people learn about the Jazz Guitar Greats. (Not to mention my own selfish joy when I get to read it!) :)
Hello RBC2. Glad to hear it! Chap 10 solos were created by me for the book. They are not Dad:). Chap 11 solos were Dad's written especially for the book
Sorry Sketch no. If i'm being honest. I'm not sure even if I added tabs (via Sibelius) it would be accurate because of the unique choices my father made.
