This reminds me of the John List case. Where he murdered his entire family then went on the run. Years later when he was caught he’d say it was because they were broke. He said that he’d rather they were dead than have to suffer the humiliation of being poor. They will eventually find this narcissist remarried & with a new identity.
For Thomas, he has well been murdered in the night of the 5th of April. In fact this will probably shock you (it shocked the french) but Xavier would have killed everybody the night of the 3rd of April excepted his second son (because he was at his student appartment) and then took a diner with him at the restaurant the 4th of april, after having killed his wife and all his children excepted Thomas who had no idea of what happened the last night. During the diner at the restaurant, Thomas got sick and went to the auto of Xavier to relax a bit, we believe that Xavier tried to drug him (he did that with every family members he killed) but a detail forced him to bring Thomas back at his appartment for this night (a problem we do not know). The 5th of April, Xavier sent a text message to Thomas, saying that his mother had got a bycicle accident and so he was pried to come back to home, and he did. The last text message of Thomas was sent the 6th of April around midnight where he told to a friend that he was watching "Midnight Express" with his father. We never got any proof of his existence after the night of the 5th to the 6th of April. And yes you got it, the poor son came back to the house while his whole family was buried in the garden just a day ago. This story is one of the worst of humanity.

Someone like Xavier, who plans to kill his entire family, goes through all the elaborate details to do so, does not commit suicide. He's hiding somewhere in the world. RIP beautiful children and wife.
Chey Mįlíoņ I watched this on the Netflix show “unsolved mysteries”. His lifelong best friend is the guy who thinks he is in South America. He also spoke Spanish quite well and there are cargo ships that travel to South America from his last known destination. Who knows ? But this guy is insane 110%. If he really cared for his family he could have taken out a huge life insurance policy and killed himself leaving his family with a lot of money. Instead he killed them and started a new life. Coward!!
He was planning it years before. His best friend said he was passionate about the story of a guy who killed his entire familly and ran away to have a new start. So he did it too, and did it the exact same way
A interesting point was brought in the Netflix documentary: He was from a traditional French aristocratic family... With bishops and poets. So when we killed all this family he killed all his lineage, which was somehow important to him carry the name. Is crazy that he is probably somewhere with a new family living low profile with a common last name.
I believe he did most likely kill himself in a place where his body would unlikely to ever be found. He was a huge narcissist and probably loved the idea of his legacy being one of mystery.
@@jonslg240 exactly… he was a suite narcissist. so him planning the killing of your whole family & everything else to the exact, minute detail for, what i’m assuming was, a very long time…, he’s not goin to end his life. if he’s gotten away with it to this extent, his ego is beyond any self-recognition to where he’d end his own “sacred” and “important” life. he’s living a high life right now, where ever he is, because his own narcissistic ways will not allow him to end his self.
He fits the profile of a family annihilator. As soon as you mentioned his business ventures I knew it'd come out that he was having financial troubles. He's obsessed with control and his own ego, so he falls apart when confronted by things outside his power to fix and makes up grandeloquent lies to salve his pride. He may have either treated his family as his own cult or had just enough control to bamboozle them into confusion while murdered them. I predict when they find him again, it'll be under a new identity with a new family.
They just caught him an hour ago in Glasgow! He flew from Charles de Gaulle and they caught him by his fingerprints (which were flagged by Interpol), despite the fake passport.
You missed some vital detail, such as wife Agnes being a frequent contributer to an online forum where she described her problems and deep unhappiness with her husband and life. In a post from 2004, seven years before the murders, she wrote her husband had commented that the death of their whole family 'would not be a tragedy'. He likely had this idea to annihilate them all and start a new life for many, many years and in 2011, had perfected the details enough and had his failures pouring in enough to just do it. The secret agent shit is just grandiose garbage, typical of fucking narcissists who have a inherent need to sound impressive even when they are in he midst of total personal failure.

@pretentious goat Hard work? He never gives credit to the sources, takes pictures, videos and music from everywhere, not showing any respect at all to the people that created these things. I can't respect him, because he lacks respect for others.
This perp actually believed they wouldn’t find the bodies. So in his mind, he believed that everyone would accept his story and not look for him. Imagine the family, at what point is it to late to realise your living with a madman.
more bizarre : his sister doesn't believe that the 5 bodies of the family found under the house are really the bodies of their people. she thinks that it is a plot (they put some cadavers from other people there) from DEA and government to accredit the protection program ! you shouldn't forget that the mother and sister of XDDL founded a cult, the church of Philadelphia, and that the mother says that she receives message from Virgin Mary herself ! He comes from a very particular family.
My theory is he wanted them to find the bodies, he literally looked at a security camera and used his own credit card as a way to taunt the police because he was 6 steps ahead of them because it took them weeks to finally find the bodies
Take a look at the Chris Watts case in Jim can’t swim channel... he said something like: extreme Narcissists who committed this kind of massacre, think differently. They truly believe that people will believe in them, something in the lines of “How can someone NOT trust me? I will get away with this my plan is perfect”. Crazy shit
The sad look in the eyes of his children, the lies about the dogs, letters full of details to many different people; let's say that hole wasn't dug in one day. Maybe his boys were coerced into helping?
Man this dude is adorable. Always has a welcoming style to his videos and it always feels like I'm looking into these mysteries with a friend rather than by myself. My cup of tea. Keep up the great stuff Mike!
So hard to believe this stuff actually happens. A burglar or killer would never even have to kill me because I would indeed die of heart failure before they could even touch me. lol
When the dogs were howling is when they were all dead. Poor dogs probably got killed right after to shut them up and stop them from drawing attention .
The only thing I dont understand its how can a father raise his kids till teenage or older and then murder them just because he got some financial issues? Dont he know that his kids are grown up and its time to discuss issues with kids and go with mitual understanding? I am sure those kids would have understood situation and tried to support his father by doing some part time jobs. Why the hell he had to kill such beautiful family, I mean look at them, with such a beautiful family you can cross any hardship with a smile on face. If he is a psychopath I can understand but , he raised those kids for almost like 20 years, he loved them so much . How is it possible for a father or mother to kill their childern after raising them for almost 20 years ? I still dont understand, its litrally impossible, either he gone mad or he got possesed. I still cant digest the fact that he killed kids, if he had issues he could have commited sucide.
Anything and everything is possible when you're a psychopath....Some people's psychopathy is latent and only comes to the fore on activation by certain factors/events...
I am pretty sure it was more than the financial issues here. He wanted to live in the USA and the family tight him in France and Im pretty sure he blamed them

As a french feller, I find very cool that you covered this case. It's very famous here and people will sometimes post stuff on twitter or facebook about sightings of Xavier, but nothing has ever been proven. Btw, the correct pronounciation of his last name is Dupont de LigonNES, it rhymes with mayonnaise or Super NES, because of the accent on the e :)
I’m so glad to run into this video. For a while, every That Chapter video that I pulled up, I have already seen. I was beginning to panic. however I’ve never seen this one before!
An article on Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès (Lee gonn ess) appeared in the French national daily "Le Figaro" this weekend. Criminologists and Psychiatrists were interviewed and were asked to speculate on the motives and what happened to Ligonnès 10 years on. All interviewees speculated that Ligonnès was an extreme narcissist; he was depressed over his bisinesss failures and his wife's infedilities. Killing everybody was a way to "clean the slate" and start a new life. All speculated that Ligonnès was still alive and living who knows where.
The saddest part about this is that the dogs howled for two nights before they were killed.. they were probably howling for the Death their family Edit: sorry guys I should have phrased my comment differently. Obviously human lives are more valuable than animal lives, ok? The detail about the dogs just happened to tug at my heart at the moment.
One day, when I was a kid my parents went to their home in the countryside but me, being a teenager didn't like that so I stayed home and obviously called some close friends to play videogames and stuff. A dog has been howling all night long and around 5 am, everyone was asleep except for a friend of mine that was smoking at the window and me that was almost entering deep sleep, but still remember him saying that a dog howling so much means death. Shortly after I fall asleep... We woke up around 11 and some friends already had went to their homes. I dressed and left to buy some bread for breakfast. When I exited the entrance door of my building I saw the first-floor neighbor on the window and I smiled and greeted her, almost promptly she asks me if I've already received the bad news, which I reply "No, what happened?". She told me "The twins' father has died of a heart attack. The twins were other friends we had in the neighborhood and I was shocked and immediately remembered what my friend said the other night. I was petrified in front of such evidence. Now you must understand that I'm not superstitious at all. I can walk in cemeteries at night because I don't believe in ghosts or gods. I can camp in a pitch-black night without fear because I don't believe in monsters or other stuff like that. But this event of my life is pretty much burnt in my brain. How is this possible?
@@dario.matos.de.sa.11 It's possible because dogs have emotion just like other complex animals. My own dog has howled before at the loss of his buddy when my other dog passed away.
Wait, so the lawyer was just like "oh those bodies of humans and two dogs under the patio? Nah, they aren't them, no big deal" Like, if they aren't them, then whose bodies are they? Human remains don't tend to just appear under patios randomly. That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Hopefully he's caught and brought to justice if he is still alive.
The new Unsolved mysteries covered this and it wasn't nearly as good as this, even with their big budget. Unsolved Mysteries doesn't feel like Unsolved Mysteries without a host. They should really considered giving Mike Oh a call. He could make their new show so much better.
Just saw this case on the new unsolved mysteries series and remembered you covered it, so I came back to see the differences in story telling. The two stories are vastly different but the facts are consistent. They focus on interviews with friends and cover a lot more about the family history of nobility and how that could impact the father to kill the family. They completely miss the fact that he had a business venture that helped hide money withdrawals. They do a little more to explore the possibility of suicide and you do more to cover the actions leading up to the murders. They do more to show the travels of the father between the murders and his disappearance. Honestly both interpretations are very good.
Family anihilators over value their importance. They are often in massive debt & reason their family could never function without them or a high income, so to them it's a mercy killing.
While there are a lot of Frenchmen in Quebec, a smarter move would be to go to a place that doesn't have an extradition treaty with France, like the US.
Are spies allowed to out themselves as such? Villain: "You're quite a card player, Mr. Bond." Bond: "I got good teachers at spy school. And the guy behind you is an undercover spy who signals me what cards you hold."
This crime reminds me of John List who killed his wife, his mother and three children back in 1971 to escape his drab existence in New Jersey and remained free and enjoyed life under an assumed name for the next 18 years before he was finally caught through America's Most Wanted. He planned the murder of his family meticulously by sending notes to his children's school that they will be visiting relatives in another state. He stopped deliveries of the milk, mail, and newspaper. The family was very reclusive and didn't socialize, so their neighbors were not aware anything was amiss until almost a month when the lights in the house, which he left on along with a radio speaker system playing music, started burning out one by one. I wouldn't be surprised if that monster Xavier is still out there somewhere living it up.
I am french, so please forgive my mistakes. Mr List was smart but in my point of view things were easier in the 70 's.A lot of people think De Ligonnes is dead ( accident? suicide?), he had no money, nowhere to live etc...Of course, journalists have to maintain a mystery over the years on TV and newspapers. This event has been a shock for the whole country.
update - october 12th 2019... the man arrested at the Glasgow airport IS NOT Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès ...the DNA-test is negative. this story is a PR-disaster for the french and scottish police.

My absolute favorite thing about Mike is his sarcasm. I am the same type of person. He is also empathetic to the victims in these cases. Plus his accent is amazing and he is adorable.
There is a mystery. The mystery is where he is and why he did it. Watch the Unsolved Mysteries episode about it on Netflix. This case is an unsolved mystery
ChaseYT I did watch it. It’s not really unsolved. I mean they say that but it seems obvious to me. He was in debt and wanted a fresh start. Psychopaths don’t care. He might be living somewhere under a new name. It’s not that mysterious when it has happened before
S There is a mystery. The mystery is the face that no one knows where he is. We all know that it was Xavier that did it but the mystery part of the episode is where he is. When someone finds him he will go to prison but we don’t know if anyone will find him.
Wow, this one is beyond creepy. Frankly with all of the twists and turns I'm amazed that you were able to present this in such an organized manner! I don't creep out easily, but the hairs on my neck were all standing. I agree with you: Xavier is still alive. Somewhere.
Ha!! Yeah. My eyebrows went up too. I'm 43 years old and my wife 'gives' me $70 a week pocket money. ...from my salary. And mistresses? Just my fucking hand.
I remember this well! I live in Nantes and had just moved here a few months before this happened. They were a well to do Catholic family, which made the murders even more scandalous so it was all over the news for days. It's worrying to think that the guy is still out there.
@@lesliefroelich4144 Xavier was part of a catholic secte younger, the objectives of that secte have never been reached, so he lost his faith at this moment. We can say that he was catholitic in the form, but he was not catholic anymore inside himself, he lost his faith.

I discovered This Channel a month or so ago, and now I'm hooked. I look forward to watching it every day. I'm not having a decent day until I hear Mike say, "heeeey you." Please keep the videos coming!
Wait, hold up. He received a 70 thousand dollar loan from ONE OF HIS MISTRESSES??? Mike, how do you just slide right by that without a comment? That could definitely be his motive. Anybody else catch that?
Mistresses in France aren't viewed the same as mistresses in many other places. Most men have mistresses in France. Pretty commonplace. Not really murder motive there.
@@davidabest7195 Explain. Why is it that something one culture does that is considered normal to them is disgusting to you? You do realize that this is just an issue of your own perspective right? It's just the value system that you grew up with. You're not substantiating a meaningful appraisal of a value system, you're just showing yourself to be closed minded.
@Kitten Lyric Numerically, this is sort of required. It would be very difficult mathematically to have a large number of men taking mistresses without a large number of women also participating. And yes, women in France often have boyfriends as well. It does seem to have some level of restraint, but it is also quite socially "acceptable" albeit hidden.
This story is utterly bone-chilling and I often think about it. There's nothing spectacular about a man in financial trouble killing his entire family (sadly) but so many details about this case are just mind-boggling. The level of intense planning it must have taken to execute. The fact that he went out to dinner with his oldest son after having committed a massacre the night before. The way he successfully disappeared afterwards. This man is liteally the embodiment of evil.

Hmm you missed a lot of stuff, the last time he was seen was on cctv footage. He looks at the camera carrying his gun and salutes off and walks towards the wooded mountains. They searched there but never found him. He either went to kill himself or went through there to trick them but escaped elsewhere
Dennis Howell they’re talking about how the dogs barked for two consecutive nights and then never again. The only emotion in the letter he showed was the dogs so it’s possible he killed the dogs last because a part of him found that hardest. So you can make a time line of about when the family was killed by the dogs barking and then silence.
@@_minkit naw. He's saying he is a dog whisperer and because of this he has knowledge of a dog's mind. He has never whispered or spoken to a dog that has lied, they have all been honest. I honestly wish he was on this case but from what I hear he is on the verge of solving the mystery of "who let the dogs out"
Agreed the dogs while howling the two nights were aware of the dead bodies and were in trauma I think. Xavier struggled killing them hence leaving it two days despite the noise and no doubt difficult emotions, he didn't want to kill the dogs but he had to but it still took him two days despite the situation. Can safely assume the first day of the dogs howling is pretty much around the day the whole family were murdered.
As it is common with most of these murderer's cases... the crazy and narcissism runs in his family. I feel bad for the children and I bet that if they'd dig in, we would find out their family life would be a lot less than perfect.
Man. Last video. Been watching your videos for almost 24 hours. Tired as hell, but the way you cover the cases is utterly captivating! Keep up the awesome work hun!
Just a guess but usually when a whole family is murdered and 1 is still alive then probably 90% (just guessing) of the time the person who is alive killed them.
Anyone else has this persistent feeling like they have seen him (dad) somewhere before? He reminds me of someone so much, I think some actor, but I just can't remember who it was...
Omg he has to be found, he can’t get away with this. Has prob gone to the USA that’s what he been wanting for years!! Should make a movie on this! (Wen he gets caught...)
Great coverage of this on the show Unsolved Mysteries. He was caught deliberately in front of a CCTV camera with what looked like a large gun before heading to the mountains. As his body was not found after extensive searching, many believe it was to convince the police he had suicided, but in fact did not.
This reminds me of the John List case. Where he murdered his entire family then went on the run. Years later when he was caught he’d say it was because they were broke. He said that he’d rather they were dead than have to suffer the humiliation of being poor.
They will eventually find this narcissist remarried & with a new identity.

My friend and I have been watching since he made his first video and I love it more with each video he makes.

Classic family annihilator profile. Heavily in debt, and unwilling to deal with the consequences.
The saddest part about this is that the dogs howled for two nights before they were killed.. they were probably howling for the Death their family
Edit: sorry guys I should have phrased my comment differently. Obviously human lives are more valuable than animal lives, ok? The detail about the dogs just happened to tug at my heart at the moment.
Arts and Laughs - I concur................
truly sad...poor doggos
Probably slowly dying from poison.
Nah, they aren't them, no big deal"
Like, if they aren't them, then whose bodies are they? Human remains don't tend to just appear under patios randomly. That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
Hopefully he's caught and brought to justice if he is still alive.
Brb. I have to go check under my patio.
The new Unsolved mysteries covered this and it wasn't nearly as good as this, even with their big budget.
Unsolved Mysteries doesn't feel like Unsolved Mysteries without a host. They should really considered giving Mike Oh a call. He could make their new show so much better.
He's the most French looking man I've ever seen (sans the rounded glasses). No wonder he's not been found.
I appreciate the comparison
Family anihilators over value their importance. They are often in massive debt & reason their family could never function without them or a high income, so to them it's a mercy killing.

Yes, and why am I shocked that a Frenchman murdered his dogs?
It's called he went through a midlife crisis especially regarding his money problems, but he took things wayyy tooo far killing off his family. ☹

3:00 "The police couldn't find Annie Trace..." That's because they were looking for the Dupont de Ligonnès family. Sorry: couldn't resist.
Always can tell an Irishman by the way he says 'any' as 'annie'.
Anyone else here because of the new Unsolved Mysteries episode?
There’s a podcast too, you should check that out, it spoke about a lot of things that the tv episode didn’t cover, it’s called Casefiles #129 and is on Apple podcasts.
This was the first Episode I watched. What a mad man.
Yessss
Oh yeah!
Yes , I just wanted to know is there any more points they not included !
"...Visited a shooting range FOUR TIMES!"
*LAUGHS IN TEXAN*
I really like this channel, dammit! You've always got great topics!
Haha thanks Heather!
Your French pronunciation is really good! I know that's not the point of... well, anything, but! It's still nice to hear.
Haha thanks, I was chancing my arm there
Hua hua huaaaàaa
@@ThatChapter just a thing dear? you do spell "ligonaysss"..dupont de Ligonnayss!
Basically every word (Name) he mentions is pronounced wrong.
Mike,
The phrase "chancing my arm" is most definitely not one that I am use to. I'm going to look it up after the upload. However,( I know this is random) where did you hear that used? I often use "the cut of your jib" , and no one knows what I mean when I say it. Now I find myself stumped at your phrasing. Thanks for your great content, and humor. I love your videos.
Regards,
Mitchell
Hmm you missed a lot of stuff, the last time he was seen was on cctv footage. He looks at the camera carrying his gun and salutes off and walks towards the wooded mountains. They searched there but never found him. He either went to kill himself or went through there to trick them but escaped elsewhere
"The turd of April"? is that like the Ides of March? Lol, JK< love the channel and the accent.
Honestly dogs will tell you the absolute truth. I would build the timeline from that and their actions.
You speak with a lot of honest dogs bro?
😪😓😪
As it is common with most of these murderer's cases... the crazy and narcissism runs in his family. I feel bad for the children and I bet that if they'd dig in, we would find out their family life would be a lot less than perfect.
Sunday the 💩 of April
Terd 💩 lmfao!!!!!! You just made my week. Thanks 😊
Now I get this comment! I read it before I watched.
Lol the 3rd of April ,good one!!
Sundays in April are simply shite
😂😂😅
Always great seeing my favorite channels having sponsors! Congratulations, man, hoping you will get those 100k subs soon
"A turdy tousand dollar debt". Mike you are killing me. Love from Mozambique and thanks for helping me fall asleep.
I was going to watch this tonight before I go to bed, but I can't wait
That’s a good looking family.

Man. Last video. Been watching your videos for almost 24 hours. Tired as hell, but the way you cover the cases is utterly captivating! Keep up the awesome work hun!
I love this dude.."Da Turd of April" or da Turteenth..no no..I'm ribbing him..I dig his accent, and one of the best ch on TH-cam..peace y'all..
You're about the turdyfifth person to bring that up today.
Love him too, but he needs to buy some h’s. He’s run low.

Just a guess but usually when a whole family is murdered and 1 is still alive then probably 90% (just guessing) of the time the person who is alive killed them.
You tell a story like no other, Mike. Love ya 😅
You should do a video on the Tromp family from Australia. I’m always hoping for an update with a bit of an explanation for the whole thing.
Great job again! Cant wait for the next one
Thank you!
Anyone else has this persistent feeling like they have seen him (dad) somewhere before? He reminds me of someone so much, I think some actor, but I just can't remember who it was...
Dude look normal af
He looks like David Wallace from the office.
Same here. I told my wife after I stared at it for a while that he looks so familiar 🤔
he reminded me of leon the professional for some reason
Jeff Goldblum... a little bit
Didn't John list do the same thing.. and they never found him for 20 years.. ...
Winter Lee yes
'received a loan from ONE OF his mistresses'
Made me laugh really hard
11:06 love how they use a translator with a heavy French accent. 😂
He looks like any other french person, ever. Gonna be hard to find this guy if he's still alive.
I just check Australia, doesn't look like he's here.
I asked the only other four people in England, and they said they haven't seen him, either.
Incredible teamwork, fellas!! Let’s hit the bar to celebrate 🍻
Haven't seen him in Canada, also about Sally, haven't seen her either 👁👄👁
Pretty sure you missed him when you picked up some groceries last week.
I’ve checked all of Florida and most of North and South Carolina. He’s nowhere around there.
Why did you gloss over the fact he has mistress'? I would think that fact plays a bigger role in his "murder my whole family plan"
Love when a new video is out by my favorite TH-cam channel 🤗 . . Thank you Mike as always 🤘🏻
Thanks Samantha!
As his body was not found after extensive searching, many believe it was to convince the police he had suicided, but in fact did not.
yessss just in time to start doing my office work. Thanks Mike!
