    CORRECTION Submitted May, 5, 2011
There is a report of ONE PERSON who shoots free throws underhand in organized basketball ... in this case ... at the High School Level. He is the Number One free throw shooter on his Varsity Basketball team. Last year, he shot 75 percent.
    • Rick Barry & son go un...
    www.gazette.com/sports/ramsey-...
Canyon is the "fifth" Rick Barry son. It is reported that Brent Barry shot free throws underhand in high school and quit shooting underhand while playing at Oregon State.
    www.thefreelibrary.com/OVERWHE...
A large part of the world keeps wondering why Almost No One shoots free throws underhand? I can cover my body with tatoos ... I can wear earrings on my toes ... and "other things" ... but ... there is NO WAY I'M Shooting Free Throws Underhand!
    Stand
    Grip
    Lift
    Follow Through
    SWISH!
    Update 3/17/2011
SoCooLBob is now 65 years old ... has very little left in his legs and/or lungs.
He currently shoots free throws two or three times a week and during several competitive sessions has shot in excess of 90 percent.
See ... Bob's IMPOSSIBLE FREE THROWS
    • Bob's Free Throws aka ...
THIS ... The Underhand Free Throw
What's fascinating and instructive to me about this shot, is that this video, created and broadcast worldwide with over 100,000 views is just everything anyone would ever need to know about how to shoot 90 percent of your free throws successfully.
    It's completely demonstrated.
The only thing remaining to achieve the objective is To Do It
And yet ... after all this time ... 45 years or so for a fellow named Rick Barry ... NOONE in the world shoots the shot this way in organized "competitions."
    NO PROFESSIONAL
    NO COLLEGE STUDENT
NO HIGH SCHOOL Basketball Player shoots free throws underhand ...
    TODAY
    How Come?
    Update December 4, 2010
After three games of one on one, which currently leaves "old" SoCooLBob with no legs and little air, SoCooLBob shot over 90 percent, in competition with his son Jon, about 150 shots.
Had 5 ten out of tens including one 25 in a row.
I can't recall the last time I missed the last shot to tie or win.
Turns out you don't even need strong legs (although it will help) to be successful at this shot.
    April 14, 2010 UPDATE !!!

    Original Description
    SIMPLE RULE
If you want to learn how to do a thing, find a master and copy them. Wonder why almost nobody seems to follow this rule when it comes to making free throws? ... Rick Barry says it's EGO.
    Wonder what that means?
That most people do, on account of EGO, what's not good for their EGO?
As SoCooLBob has analyzed this video and others over the years; as SoCooLBob has very occasionally practiced this simple skill, taught it and watched others, there are many additional positive thoughts I could add ... including.
Not only does Rick shoot this shot almost perfectly.
This presentation teaches you how to shoot it almost perfectly as well.

God, I wish I'd known about this guy back in high school. Our team could've used such an effective free throw. The thing is, none of the coaches even mentioned Rick Barry and his underhanded frees. I would've gladly used it during our games.

The description of the body stance and wrist hinge joint mount during align release and follow through is AWESOME...
the definition of a machine is to perform a service successfully over and over again... Some players in the standard shot cannot get there ulnar-collateral ligament to get the fingers side by side on the popular free throw mount... Fact... This origin of propel is anatomically PERFECT and what an honor for us to receive this knowledge... Oh and for us at home-the wrist knowledge

Such a god at free throws, love shooting his free throws on NBA 2K7, I used his shot a few times and it worked, I am currently bout a 70 or so percent shooter, which isnt bad, but I should try 100 using this technique

It is a proven fact that the "granny shot" is more accurate than the overhand shot. Regardless of how you play. The arc of the ball due to the granny shot is naturally more likely to go in the basket than that of the overhand, plus the backspin stops the ball if it hits the rim. It's simple geometry folks. The basket at a low trajectory looks looks like an oval to the ball whereas a higher trajectory creates a larger area for the ball to enter the basket.

The practicality of this shot is in winning HORSE games. I found that if you want a higher free throw percentage a higher trajectory on the ball helps. I shoot my free throws like Derek Fisher and it works!!

if you shoot FT's overhead, you also practice your set shot and jump shot form..shooting free throws underhand is unefficient, as it only practices your underhand form(free throw). Inefficiency is why most people don't practice underhand free throws

hmm...I'm pretty happy with my FT form but I'll def. give this a try now.
Completly opposite of Michael Jordan's advice that you should shoot FTs just like you shoot a regular spot-up shot.
Then again, MJ was 85%, Barry avged like 92%

  • @AreolaGrande94
    @AreolaGrande94 15 ปีที่แล้ว

this style puts a lot of emphasis on the softness with which the ball hits the rim. as important as that is, aim is more important, and few players can master this form of shooting aim-wise.
practice shooting FT's the way steve nash and jose calderon shoot, and you will hit 90%+ guaranteed.

  • @TheVinzius
    @TheVinzius 14 ปีที่แล้ว

His style of free throw is unusual but to him it is effective. He has a point, when you're on the line you want to relax and this style is in relax position. This might be one of the reasons why he has one of the greatest FT% in NBA history. Free throws is one of most neglected fundamentals of basketball.

  • @jcoffey3

Rick Barry had this shot down to a science. If the players in the NBA used this shot every game the scores would average well into the 100s all season.

It is obvious he made the shot but hit the rim also. Which is why he said when he is having a contest with his friend shots that go in but hit the rim aren't counted. Read between the lines. Or rather, extrapolate.
Cool video. And he is correct people do not shoot this way because of ego. I know I won't unless I was a below 60% ft shooter and getting to the line often.

And what would be the downside to me using those 3 hours a week for 6 weeks to improve my current shot? Or rather an aspect of my game that I feel I have not yet perfected? Learning underhand FTs, even if it takes me 2 days, will not come in handy unless someone walks up to me a says "Hey listen, make 5 in a row and I'll give you a million." And I'm not a very lucky guy so I won't hold on to that scenario ever happening. So chances are I'll have no time in actualy using what I've learned.

there are about 4 things wrong with your comment, probably more.
    1. 9 of the top 10 FT shooters of all time shoot overhand. rick barry seems to be the exception.
    2. i HAVE tried the shot. i can hit about 95 out of 100 free throws overhand. i can hit about 60 underhand- i realize i haven't mastered the technique, but i've practiced both equally.
    3. if it works for some, it won't work for all. if it was truly the best way to shoot, why don't the best shooters shoot this way?

Yeah the reality is simple....it's effective, but it looks stupid. I don't blame anybody losing their enthusiasm if most of the time, they're getting laughed at. Imagine if wearing the old school short shorts made you run faster. Most people would still feel ridiculous for wearing such outdated clothes, despite an advantage.
