    I played and gigged for YEARS with like 2 drive pedals and a multi FX and it worked great, I'm a huge proponent of that for new guitarists and I wish I had an option as good as the plethora when I was starting. It's such a great way to keep a small manageable board that's legit gig worthy. I was able to keep that and convert to all individual pedals over time. First get a good overdrive you like, then get another because obviously, then get a compressor because digital compression just isn't quite the same, and then of course you'll end up with a dedicated delay unit, etc etc. The nice thing about that route is you're never starved for an effect and each time you buy a new pedal you know exactly what you want and it'll feel like a real upgrade.

    Honest piece of advice for people getting their first effects. I've been playing for 10 years now and I'm the pedal kind of guy. I like swapping pedals around and constantly changing stuff on my board. Since I bought the Quad Cortex, things changed drastically for me. I'm gradually changing from true analog pedals to digital only. At first, I used the QC for amp sims and drives only and kept all my analog drives, modulation, delays and fuzz. Best example: The Boss CE2w Chorus. I never thought I'd replace this pedal digitally. But the QC has a model for that exact pedal and it sounds epic! Even stereo. Sure, the QC costs almost 2 grand, but imho all the digital multi fx pedals have become so good over the last 2-3 years. I tried the Boss GT1000/CORE as well and it was absolutely amazing. So my personal conclusion: If you're new to effects, buy yourself a decent multi fx pedal, like the helix POD GO, for example. It will look very expensive at first. But trust me: If you go the pedal route, everything you'll buy will cost more than that over the years, because you have to include cables, board and power into the equation.

    After watching this entire video and then taking a while to recover and collect my thoughts, I have to say I would still go for regular pedals. Thanks to Tone City and the like, I can experience the joy of building a pedal board to use with a reasonably priced guitar and half decent amp without taking out a second mortgage (next to impossible in my youth) I know that things are increasingly digital, but I love the feeling that the old-fashioned approach gives me. There has never been a better time to be a guitarist; there really is something for everybody nowadays : )

    • @bradmathis8196
      @bradmathis8196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ditto. In reality, when I'm playing live, I generally keep pedal settings as-is, but I occasionally need to tweak my distortion, boost, delay, and modulation pedals for specific songs. A programmable pedal is not convenient. I had the Boss GT-1 which is analogous to the TC Plethora and tweaking on the fly was not convenient. Changing banks is equally inconvenient. I'll take discrete pedals any day.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hmm- when I was young you could buy a real fender for a reasonable amount, and tube amps were fairly cheap- mostly because everyone wanted solid state amps and digital rack effects which were both sort of the new kids on the block so- everyone wanted to try them. Now- even a Harmony tube amp- Harmony by the way was like the most basic, low-end, generic brand when I was a kid- sells for over 400 bucks. And a real, American made Strat costs some serious cash. That said- I will agree there are tons more budget options on the market than there used to be. And- those options beat the heck out of what we had to choose from in the early 80s. A lot of these budget guitars and pedals nowadays are really good- I'm not ashamed to play anywhere with my gear- I can keep up. Most of the time the guys I play with are freaked out how good these pedals sound once they hear the price- then they want to know all about them. My Peavey Transtube gets a lot of attention as well- ppl are shocked how much like a tube amp it sounds. It's not spot on, but it's very close.

      @Hulin-0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stoneysdead689 Good point, I suppose there is rarely an absolute truth that applies to us all. In my part of the world, American goods were expensive when I was starting out, and the cheap stuff that was available was not on a par with what we have today. I am getting on a bit, but at least I can enjoy my retirement with a new guitar now and then🙂👍🏻

    Can't help but notice that every time the Spark boost pedal appears that it is always the one knob mini version, it would be nice to hear how the bigger four knob version sounds.

    • @MrSpeed-lt8gr
      @MrSpeed-lt8gr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have both of those. The bigger version sounds great too. It has a toggle switch for clean, fat or mid boost which is really nice. I personally keep the EQ at noon but I was thinking of trying it with the treble cranked and using it as a treble boost.

    • @mark.guitar
      @mark.guitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree because I have one.The tone shaping on the big one is reeeally good for overdriving a pedal, or an amp, that is just breaking up. Good for pretty much any tone shaping, from scooped mids to old school. It doesn't have the momentary function that the small one has but the three way gives three great basic tones and the treble and bass work well over their full range.

    • @robertbrown2728
      @robertbrown2728 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer the big one partly because it doesn't have the momentary function on the footswitch. Also the fat setting is really useful.

    So, my conclusion as a learning guitarist, is to go for separate pedals. I did start off with a multi effects pedal (a Sendai day hand Boss me 25) but I struggled to set it, not because if the clunky interface (well that too) but mostly because I didn't really know the sounds I was mean to be emulating. I have going it easier to learn about the way pedals change the signal by buying them one at a time.

    So liberating to see affordable and small pedals come to shine.. I'm considering a killer micro pedal board for easy travelling and managing both live and studio work on the go. A little booster up front, Slide Rig Compact Deluxe compressor by Origin, overdrive + Plethora 3X. Got everything except for the Plethora. That said, I've already got the TC Pipeline Tap Tremolo, HOF2 reverb, DD-5 delay, and honestly, apart from attaching the tuner in front, this wouldn't take up so much more space. But, as you guys said, the convenience of presets and all sound tailoring that can be done up front, less hassle with cables, power supply to kepp it all juiced. Yepp, Plethora seems like a great solution.

    The reason so many ppl overlook auto wah on their board imo is because unless you get the right pre-amp, have the right guitar, and set it all up right- they don't sound that good. They sound o.k. but- get something like the Nyle preamp/compressor which is designed for playing funk and R&B, use a strat in the second position (Neck and middle)- now turn on the auto wah- sounds amazing.

    Watching this video was awesome .... I've been torn as to which route to take... this video covered many of the pedals on my wish list...and the DP Dumble spunded awesome!
    My list has about about 12 slots to fill, and about 20 or so pedals inhabe my eye on... from TC , EHX , MXR , JHS , etc... to start with even just the tuner I want, and 1 or 2 others, plus some power, I'd be close to the cost of the MX5... so I have finally decided to go that rpute for sure. Maybe we will add to that with some pedals later, and as its small it would be OK as part of a hybrid board with a few other widgets ... but it seems like it would get us the best start... and it's not like either boutique pedals or multi-fx would make a lot of difference to some newbs with a solid state practice amp...lol the MX5 just seems so flexible and powerful for a really good price, in a small and handy form factor...
    I'll still always want some stuff like Soul Food, and the HoF and Flashback, and a few others, this video also gave me another example of how great those pedals sound...
    Others I'd love to see you and DP do a video on, Sugar Drive, Bonsai, Packrat, Oceans 11 and Canyon... let me know if those are featured in a previous shootout video or something.
    Cheers

    I like the individual pedal style...just personal preference. I enjoy being able to put the pedals in the exact order that I prefer.

      You mean just like every digital modeler / multi-effects option from Line 6, Boss, Headrush, Neural, Fractal, Mooer, NUX, Zoom, etc., lets you do?

      @@zoomzoom3950 and the Plethora x5 which also allows you to split it up and put some before the amp, and some in the effects loop.

    The lack of Phaser on Pete's board is unacceptable.
    I plan to get the Plethora since I was going to buy a few more TC Electronics pedals anyway.

    The thing is.. the X3 has the inputs/outputs to do either stereo or an fx loop.
    I bet you if they went out with an update to add the capability of an fx loop they'd sell like candy!
    But then, they might never sell another X5, so that's probably why they didn't.

      It does not sound as good as their single pedals, because it has no clean guitar signal thru, like the pedals have.

    Tremolo is volume Lee - Vibrato is pitch - that, in simple terms is the difference. The "arm" on guitars is wrongly called a tremolo arm, as it changes the pitch so it's a vibrato arm The tremolo circuit on Fender amps is tremolo, as it gives the impression of volume coming and going. 🙂

    Went through this dilemma in May and bought the Plethora X5 Which together with tone prints, my favourite overdrives (Durple, Gladio and Silverlinings) and my Boss AW3, gives me everything I want.
    I especially liked the flexibility of a configurable insert send & return and the connection for the expression pedal ... AND 127 different boards..!!!
    What's not to like.?
