    I bought a new Uncle Henry Senior stockman a couple of years ago and recently my mother-in-law gave me an old one, from the 80s probably, that she found in her my late father-in-law's junk. The old Schrades are so much different. They have a weight and a feel to them that does not exist in the new ones.

      They were made better all around back then, but we can only live in the here and now so if I want the older ones I go to eBay for a bit of nostalgia.

    My eyes have been opened to the world of these types of pocket knives. I’m in love already and I don’t even own one yet. ( I know it’s sad ), I have no idea where to start for my first purchase into this world. Could you please give me a suggestion as to where to start! I’d appreciate it

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a lot to choose from. My suggestion would be to pick a traditional pattern you think you'd really enjoy carrying. I started with a stockman with 3 blades because I hadn't yet learned to sharpen.

    Its nice to see the difference in old and new. I'm new into knives really like watching your videos about the different types and brands keep rocking. I've gotten some pretty terrible Uncle Henry knives. One came in a nice tin but didn't even have a grounded edge. Others steel so bad you can't get sharp. Best Uncle Henry I got is a real stag handle with D2 steel real nice knife by any manufacturer standards less than $40.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will waiver in quality. My advice is if you can get the same knife not part of a tin with a Schrade product, you're probably better off buying it separate. Might cost a touch more, but the products in the tins never seem to be quite as good.

    I've become a big fan of that new stagalon. I think I need to start a Uncle Henry collection soon. Thanks for the great comparison, buddy!

    I'm pretty much sold if the knife has that sort of 70s traditional knife look and looks like it'll do the job. Both these knives have that in bucket load's. Was looking at a vintage Imperial a couple of months ago and the scales were almost the same but the brown parts were black. would have bought it but it looked like the original owner really got their moneys worth out of the blades.Good stuff TK!!!

      When perusing ebay I come across quite a number of well-used knives that would otherwise be something fantastic to own. It makes finding the ones with lots of meat left on the bone that much more exciting. Thanks Richard.

    Great review, as usual. Never have given these new PRC made Uncle Henrys (or even Old Timers) a chance. Have a real problem that I probably should get past, but as an old USMC Captain, I just can't quite fully do it yet. But, I ordered one of these in a canoe, so we'll see. As for that exposed tang issue, yeah, I hear you. One of my biggest complaints of the fine workhorse of Case's Sod Busters/Juniors. That exposed part is wicked. Anyway, thanks for the always great work.

    I’ve noticed that these foreign made knives are getting better than they used to be. Of course we’d all prefer an American made knife, but realistically that’s not gonna happen anymore as often in the affordable arena American-made you’re going to pay big money. Nowadays, it comes down to the tooling in the machinery, and the materials, more so than who put it together. Sadly, Time marches on. I wish they were still made here.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think all American's feel much the same way, Dude. Thanks for watching.

    Having an original and new model is good idea. You can enjoy the old one as a collector and use the new one all you like. The Stagalon is a good looking cover material on both.

    Though they may be similar, when Taylor Brands bought out Schrade they didn't buy the machinery in New York, and moved production overseas. 🤔

      That's correct. The tooling was completely reworked, some are better representations than others. Thanks Alpine.

    Thrifty, You always have great content and presentation…..BUT!…..the focus clarity on the knife wavers, sharp to fuzzy, fuzzy to sharp. I boosted my focus quality setting on TH-cam but it didn’t make a difference. One of two conditions in my unqualified opinion, you need a better camera or you need to hold the knife still as best you can while the camera works to focus. You have a tendency to flash your hands around quickly while displaying the product. I offer this as constructive criticism with the deepest respect to you and your very entertaining knife channel.
