One of the times I saw him he played this song. When he announced what he was going to play there were lusty "BOOS" from the crowd. But he did it so well and at the end when the song goes into a 1600"s Engish folk trip we all loved it and got what he was doing. After the song was finished we gave Mr. Thompson a standing "O He more than deserved it. ". Have seen a lot of artists over the years and Richard Thompson is by far one of the very best.
If you’re reading the comments, it’s likely because, like the rest of us, you recognize the many talents of the incredible Richard Thompson-but let’s also give credit to the great contributions of percussionist and harmony vocalist Debra Dobkin, who is wonderful here.
A master musician, showing us that a good pop song(just because of its particular arrangement, & delivery, doesn't deter from the fact that it's not a badly constructed song). Can be arranged in any style/genre, & sound pretty credible. Nice one, Richard.
Richard can recite from the phone book and morph it into a compositional masterpiece. He has an organic and extremely spiritual relationship with music.
I love Richard Thompson so much haha. Britney too! Classic pop song by one of the 2000s greatest pop stars, covered by one of the greatest folk rock musicians (and one of the greatest guitarists of all time).
@@stephenwalker850 Ever tried it? I have and it's not easy at all. Also many famous singers (like Elvis for eg) never wrote their own stuff cause they just didn't have the gift. Believe me it's a gift.
Beyond the amazing wit and humor in this performance, there's a valuable lesson that I try never to forget: There's much more fun outside of the box than in it.
He helped found the English Folk rock movement in the 1970s, and has had a distinguished career since then. He is a fantastic guitarist that has been rated as high as 19th on Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarist list.
He was the second wave, behind the truly greats: Carthy, Graham, Jansch , Leitch, Williamson, Heron. He brought the early musical traditions into mainstream, playing flats into harmonic guitar, absolute genius but was actually ancient.
The percussionist laughs, even knowing what's coming. I always laugh & love this. Richard Thompson can be a piece of work. But, no one can ever deny his talent.
saw him debut this @ the Getty...??years ago...the shock and surprise that he ended the journey over 1000 years with this song just blew everyone's mind...what a night...he kills Prince, too...get this dvd!
People once said of Jimi Hendrix that he could sit through hours of listening to bad live bands and pick out one good thing they did their whole set and incorporate it into his music, I think that's kind of what Thompson has done here.
Look up Marillion's take on Toxic. But honestly, anything that makes it to top 40 is usually a piece of very good songwriting, even if the production is way too often beyond cheesy.
@@TobiaTesan The production is one of the best elements of the song. Classic beat, featuring a recontextualized Bollywood string sample chopped up, played backwards, and with a synth bass and tremolo surf guitar, you have a great production.
Now, that's going a step too far! I would love to hear Ms Spears recreate some of her songs, with better arrangements and sensitivity. It would be good for her to show what she's really capable of, rather than just being a canvas for other people's fantasies to be drawn onto.
It's a very well written pop song in its own. I think this song was written by Max Martin. He always writes good songs. It doesn't really need to be fixed in any type of way, but Thompson's cover of the song does sound very good. I enjoyed this.
I remember singing this with a dixie/blues band a few years ago, bartenders used to crack up in recognition when we went into the first chorus because we started it with just a bass line I kind of whisper-rapped the first verse and they didn't recognize it was the oft-vilified (at that time) Ms. Spears' tune until the chorus...
cos he's one of the best songwriters of the last 50 years and has written for hundreds of huge artists along with having massive success as a folk singer. He's also one of the most versatile and amazing guitar players in the world. still, he no britney
That's rich. Richard Thompson was one of the founders of folk rock (or electric folk as it was referred to so as to differentiated it from the American folk rock movement). He had a huge impact on the way music evolved by developing a genre before Brittney Spears was even born. Brittney had some hits but i know which artists I will be listening to in 30 years.
Only my opinion, but the best cover I have ever heard (so far) is Van Halen's version of The Kink's You Really Got Me, including the Eruption intro. Heard it first 40 years ago and it still puts a tingle in my spine. Worn out 2 vinyls just on that song alone! (NOT the same on CD) Enjoy
I love this! Richard has made such wonderful music through the years. I grew up on a steady diet of the Beatles and Fairport Convention, thanks to my dad. Dad told me (can't believe I'm relating this) that he once stood next to Richard Thompson in a rest room while at the urinals.. Some small club in Columbus, Ohio. :) Nicely done, and thanks for posting this!
This interpretation is really trash He killed everything catchy about the song and replaced it with a heavy melody that doesn't work unless you thoroughly force it on the ear Since when does a piece have to literally sound worse to become more "intelligent"? Even the way he pronounces the oops, how can you confuse all of this with good music
The original was really bad, but appealed to its audience. Unfortunately, it was played to death, so the rest of us couldn't avoid it. However, RT has proved that the song is good, it was just the original arrangement that was bad. I have a lot of sympathy for B Spears - she was treated badly by the industry and her parents - but most of her music cynically exploited her youth, appearance and sex appeal. It was all attitude - style over substance. Music should be more than that. Ms. Spears could have been more than that.
Good version, but let's be real, the original is a good pop song and recording no matter what one thinks of the original artist. It looks even better when compared to what's on the top-ten usually these days. And the crowd sure knows the words.
+the green man Ok, Britney Spears isn't John Lennon or Carole King... But I see no interest to make her an object of scorn... I don't like this kind of shows but Spears is a good performer... This song is fine and Richard is very fine... Take it easy ! ;-)
I described it as an obsession because you keep responding with points that I never questioned. In fact, I made it clear in my original and subsequent comments that I don't consider Spear's singing talents or the song's production to be relevant to my point. My point was that the final product is a good song, but many commenters here can't/won't see it because their resentments about image, popularity or "credibility" override their objectivity and ability to enjoy music.
I don't understand why people rag on Britney Spears. Give her a break, for heaven's sake. She was only 18 or so when she sang this song. But, of course, put in Richard Thompson's hands reveals its true splendor.

A perfect example of an arrangement/interpretation, and NOT a cover. Attitude, feel & emotion. LOVE IT!
You see, the thing about Richard Thompson is... he's brilliant!!

The first time I heard "Sweet Child of Mine" done Country I loved it (and the singer could sing).
A good song is a good song.
And a great artist is a great artist.
Richard Thompson ... so overlooked even when looked at. Love him.

I love that the only choreography he plays into this was his hand gesture at the end.
"That's just so typically me."

This is part of his album that highlighted like 800 years of music history. Love this man.
