One man making such a loud and wonderful sound. He hits you deep in the gut. One of the finest guitarists on the Earth. A great singer, songwriter, story-teller and entertainer.
Richard Thompson is one of the most talented musicians to grace folk music. His evolution through Fairport grounded his experience and beyond with his wife flowering into the greatest folk ever produced from England.
Ohh gosh Sandy Danny, Richard Thompson, Fairport... 1972 I was 10 and just starting my life and how lucky I was to grow up in the 70's when music was at its best. Arguably the best decade of music ever, and will ever be. The 70's, I wish I could go back and experience it all over again.
Well, we each have our preferences in terms of "greatest decade" for music. I was born in the late '40s and got to hear the big band stuff, then the very start of rock and roll and the doo wop groups, Presley, Beach Boys, Orbison, all the girl groups, The Beatles and British Invasion, ad infinitum; and yes ... the WONDERFUL Sandy Denny with Richard's great guitar work on the original recording of this song, as well as those fabulous bass lines. Lots of great music out there, including classical and New Orleans Jazz and bluegrass and Blues. Plenty to enjoy. The best, however, is music that glorifies God, especially Christmas music to the glory of Jesus Christ, Lord of all the universe and Heaven.
Why do I find myself in tears listening to this song...? I'm not sure whether it's because I so miss its author... or because of all the other feelings it raises in me... (If you were in your late sixties and had totally wasted your life, you might understand...)
@@theseustoo Your post struck a chord with me. (No pun intended). When a sad song reminds you of happier times now gone, it becomes ever more poignant.
I know very well how you feel ?I understand, friend. I feel the same way sometimes. But you must not allow yourself to continue on that road. That way of thinking is a dead end road. And then I look around at what I do have in this world and the things that I did accomplish in this world. No matter what you have lost there is always something that you can look into your self and say:”I accomplished many things! “. And then I can actually sit down (and I do ),and enumerate the things I have accomplished. I am a musician. At one point in my life I felt the hand of God picking me up and placing me on the streets of Burlington Vermont as a street singer,as we used to call them. Now it is trendy to call them buskers, which is the old name from Olden times. My advice to you,is to gather up the gifts you have been given, dust them off, polish them to an impressive shine ,and go find your dream, which you left behind all those wasted years ago.Make up your own kind of prayer and have a good long talk with whatever force of nature is responsible for your being here and now,on this still mystery laden ball of elements we call earth.Forgive yourself and make amends to those whom you have hurt..Some need the help of religious institutions.Others do it by going to a place of peace and work it out with the gods of nature(Pantheism). It is up to you and no one can do it for you. Be careful not to isolate yourself.Good luck!
His guitar playing is always so impressive. Unique, precise and always accompanying his singing beautifully. What a great musician. A pleasure to listen to.
I did tell my partner's daughter I had just bought a Fairport Convention CD. She asked "who"? I said Sandy Denny and Richard Thomson, the finest singer and the best English guitar player of all time. She said "that's Eric Claption" Young people these days, no clue.
i was living in Farley Chamberlain at the time FC were staying in Farley House rehearsing for a LP and their music has stayed with me ever since. I don;t know where the time goes but I do know it gues bloody fast.
The sweet, beautiful, tone, of this master musicians guitar, blended with his unique voice, has given me goosebumps. What a magical performance. No ego whatsoever. This great man's got nothing to. prove. Brilliant!
Richard Thompson is one of the world's most under-rated singer-guitarists... if you need further proof after listening to this song, just listen to his verson of the traditional Irish song, 'The Parting Glass', which captures every possible emotion its author could possibly have intended! 'Onya Richard! And long live Fairport Convention! (RIP the beautiful Sandy Denny!) :'(
ffairport convention has always been one of my favorites. the level of talent of basically all of them. i still listen to them and their offshutes. sandy denny was one of the best. she had a problem with time and aging. they were all really young. swarb was really talented and unfortunately liked his nicotine too much it is sometines hard to watch him decline. his voice was incredible along w the fiddle. simon nicol and swarb did some great tunes. it is good to see how healthy richard is. he is totally versatile and keeps on making great music
Tuning stuff: This version is in CGDGBE. The Fairport version is in standard, using chord shapes with a lot of ringing open E and B strings (same shapes as on Harrison's "All Things Must Pass"). The '67 recording with just Sandy sounds like DADGAD, which would make her a very early adopter of it.
Was lucky enough to see him last night in London ON. He was fantastic. Unbelievable guitar player. He did this Sandy Denny song also. Beautifully done.
A lot of Americans even back in the day never heard work of either Richard Thompson or Nick Drake. Something about the way their handlers booked them, or didn't, or maybe they just suited their home population's taste in music better. Both of them becoming better known now. The songs are still great, fresh and relevant, so better late than never. I do wish Nick Drake could have known better when he was living, how he would be appreciated one day.
This has just come up after listening to Sandys version with the Strawbs recorded in 1967. Maybe her best version, and I think the earliest, and a good one to check out. Richard doing a lovely job here. ❤️
One of my top ten for sure. I can never settle on just one. He is Unique in voice lyrics- & guitar power. I heard him play solo as an opening act in front of a 23K crowd- he had them enthralled half way in.
Looking forward to RT's solo-performance in Hamburg at the Elbphilharmonie this July. I saw him live twice, in the 90s with a full band and later as a duo with Danny Thompson. Each time breathtakingly good. This version here is fascinating, but nothing comes close to his intricate guitar work in Fairport's original version.
Very nice, wish I knew what tuning he is using here-of course it was Richard who played the 'obbligato' electric part for the original recording which is sublime
Bob Leroe - agreed - I love the way Richard does Sandy's wonderful song. Can't wait to see him in October when he will be up the road from me in Brighton UK!!!!! However, he is doing all acoustic - I also love his electric guitar work - but there's always another year for that!
taylor8492 - open tunings are really useful for folk music - especially if you finger pick. I play the ukulele and try doing my own versions of trad. folk songs - the uke's tuning is actually Am7 (G C E A). Also, I often find that proper chords just won't work owing to the use of modes (such as Dorian) rather than actual keys, in folk songs. I end up devising my own chords/partial chords - whatever works really.
I love Richards version of this song, alas not as good as Sandy Denny, but wonderful just the same , I love the chit chat before hand. Saw Richard Thompson in Sydney a few years ago at The City Recital. He was really good.
Fucking amazing guitar - is he playing that on an alternate tuning ? (Ah - someone clarified, it's DADGAD..) And yes, I echo the other commenter who said that Richard does it justice, he embodies the original spirit of the song.

One of the best songs of all time. Richard does it justice because he knows where it emanates.

Sure he does!!!
Sooo Heartfelt! Brilliant !!

Happy birthday Richard 🎵🎵💯🏴☠️
Plenty of 'young kids' know many things and derserve the benefit of the doubt rather than simply being written off.
robb6624: did she really say "Eric Claption" instead of "Clapton"? That bites even worse than thinking Clapton outclasses Thompson. 😑

What a rich, warm guitar style. A lot of power and precision, but never there for its own sake. Perfect performance.
Who the heck gives this a thumbs down? Dolts. Best song ever performed in the best manner seen.
My bet is that the thumbs-downs are people whose eyes are so misty with tears that they tap the wrong icon by accident.

I have said this before but there is a poignacy in an old man singing a song written by a friend when they are both teenagers when she died young
I concur ☝️😊…tho it would have been sufficient to say ‘there is a poignancy in an old man singing a song written by a friend…’ 🤔 🎸
Yes there certainly is.
I saw him in Baton Rouge playing this, and he was AMAZING.
I have tons of respect for Richard Thompson, but for this song give me Sandy Denny.

Try to do the same Howard, it's just practice, you'll make it ! PS search clawhammer technique on you tube....................
That is because Richard is not a show-off...he inspires you to do the same.
