    The "inside joke" is a reference to the music video.

      There's also a video version with an extended intro of the dad digging into his son.
      But my favourite part has always been when the whole band is hanging out a window that's too small for them all, while singing the chorus 😅

    Ah, that "Twisted Sister Pin" part is from the music video. We had that on tape when I was a kid but it started on the part where he says, "What do you wanna do with your life??" Actually that might have been for "I Wanna Rock." Oh well. Now I'm gonna go watch the full intro now. Excited! Thanks @TheGreatBaronOBeefDip for letting me know. :)

      Mark Metcalf, the actor portraying the father in the video, had previously played Neidermayer, the ROTC student commander in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). In a reference to his role in the film, Metcalf says "A Twisted Sister pin? On your uniform?!" in the video. Snider himself can also be heard cursing and swearing the question "A pledge pin? On your uniform?" at the end of the song.

    As a bassist (primarily), I'm glad you talked about the bass part. The guy did a good enough job faking it--most audiences aren't going to know or care about what's going on in the bass half the time unless they're musicians--but the real line is so much cooler and more fun to play than what he's doing. The really jarring thing, though, is, like you mention, how the singer and band start in different keys.

    • @fistinair1979
      @fistinair1979 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Super important. The bass part builds a lot of that groove the song has.

    • @beenaplumber8379
      @beenaplumber8379 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bassist here, and I totally wanna stress something you said - playing "the real line" is so much more fun! Maybe some bassists are bashful about getting busy, but this bass line doesn't do anything too weird - it just moves and grooves. It's almost like a Duck Dunn bass line. You could even fake it just by playing scales. Fun!

    "Fix this band" quickly became some of my favorite content of all the channels I follow. I can't think of another piece if content that I click on faster. I played in a band/bands for many years and now I'm an old chunk of coal, raising my daughter on the sunny shores of Florida; this series really takes me back... we had some great shows, some not-so-great shows, some bad shows a few just awful nightmare shows where you just wanted to choke the sound guy and leave. When the acoustics or sound guy is working against you, it's over... "the game was rigged from the start"

      Hobby rock bands (Dad bands) have a hard time finding gigs. It's not hard if all you want is to play for beer money to an empty house, but club owners have serious expectations - here in the Twin Cities anyway. In my most recent band, at our 2nd gig I made exactly enough to pay for parking at the club. (We did okay later.)

You mentioned it after I posted… you’re correct, the guitars really need to come up, you really can’t hear them much in the mix. No excuses, we’ve all forgotten breaks or stops in songs! We get carried away, caught up in the moment but it didn’t really ruin the song.

    I agree with a lot of these assessments. Set lists evolve as players get the tunes down. I’d say that the dual lead is a must for this tune. But I remember joining a band about 15 years ago. They had been together for well over 20 years and I had to learn 65 tunes in two weeks for a show at a festival. One of the tunes was Reelin’ in the Years, by Steely Dan. I had to play all of the leads (and some rhythm). They had a rhythm guitarist and he lit me up after the show for not knowing those very unconventional leads note for note. Ok. I figured it out eventually and got all of the iconic (weird) riffs down. A year or two later, I break a string and while I’m switching out guitars, I hear the rhythm guy botching his part of the dual lead during the bridge. What??? He could play it. After the gig I asked him what the deal was. “I can’t play that fast.” Dude wanted me to learn 65 tunes exactly like the record in 2 weeks. “Bro, you’ve had 25 years to practice.” Victory was mine that day. Haha. But my point is that in a month they might have worked out all of the details and sounded much different.

    This was a solid performance, especially while compared to those from earlier episodes. The vocalist is really good and somewhat charismatic, I like her attitude. All of them are actually decent, I felt that bass player was kinda "lazy" not just with his bass part, but also he just stands there, almost still. And I know he's there to play the music, not dance, but part of the performance is the presence. The solo also, in my opinion, lack emotion. Sure, it is played mostly ok, but that's it. I agree that it would take just some minor detail for this band to be a lot better, because the foundaion is solid and I wish we'll see them in the future. Better and stronger.

    Dude these guys were awesome. Honestly, i'm really happy to see one of these where it just kind of feels a little more positive at least from the band's end. Like, i'm not suggesting that you're mean spirited in any way, in fact anything but. But like, at no point did it feel like people are listening to it and cringing at certain points. This band is definitely really good, and its really cool to also see them in the comments. Lots of love and respect from me. I've embarrased myself at karaoke bars enough to know I couldnt do what bands do lol

    Always a pleasure to see you continue this series. I totally agree on the backing vocals part. The bass player looked like he totally had his version of the part down so some gang vocal shouts would have added a lot.
    Though one thing to add which while valid the sound tech. Which as a sound engineer I know the feeling. Unfortunately most sound tech at small club levels aren't really there cause they love the music. Often they are jaded and don't care about the mix. Thus resulting in things such as hard to hear instruments.
    Which is why often bands who do care about their sound will hire/bring their own sound tech who cares and knows the bands sound.

    @15:40 - 15:50: I don't think the singer is motioning to the drummer. She was just doing her normal stage-precense hand movement. Also the drummer was saying "NO"! during the chorus of the song. Same time as the singer said it.

    My cousin has lived in Zurich for 25 years and I've had lengthy visits a few times... you're spot on for what they do well and they'll tell you exactly how the Swiss are the best at everything!! they aren't a humble people (I'm saying this in jest, but it still mostly holds true!), in my experience :)

      Funny... I'd say it's the other way round... 😅 We always tend to "oooh, well, I can't really do this, just give it a try... thank you, but...." Swiss people tend to feel ashamed to be proud and confident about what they arr doing. Maybe a bit different in Zurich, though😂

    Well done, the singer moves with the groove, other bandmates might want to groove with it instead of standing stiff boards, after our third song we are usually sweating moving with the groove and crowd, even if crowd is not moving we feel the groove, our singer and bassist are good at interacting with crowd, takes tension of us to feel more relaxed, and move and groove more.

    Another great breakdown analysis video, Mike. The up & coming rockers out there would do well to heed your advice on providing a reference note during the song intro. Think how many bar bands we've all seen that show such promise when they hit the stage, then die on the vine with the first vocal salvo. Lost momentum is lost opportunity to impress. You've been killing it lately with this series of videos, I've been forwarding so many to my students. Thanks!

    I saw some kids in club years ago when I was stationed in Germany in the mid 90s do this song. It was bad but it was also their very first gig and they were just getting somewhat proficient at their instruments. The singer had a music stand with the English lyrics in front of him. I think about that band a lot. I wonder if they stuck with it.

    Mike, heres a question.
    When u are not playing to a big/enegretic/rocky audience thats not going to sing along since u are a small unknown band, wud you consider playing such open, spaced, empty song that relies on crowd singalongs. Think 500 miles, come on feel the noise etc.
    (Not including 7 nation cause its fills all the melodic space super well)

    • @saucerfullofzepp4203
      @saucerfullofzepp4203 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My question is with the harmonic space, so the sound is filled and not - drums along, big guitar chords, vocals alone.
      Songs that make that instrument feel "naked" so to speak leaving most frequencies empty noticable

    Apparently you missed those Twisted Sister videos where Mark Metcalf loosely revisited his Niedermyer role in Animal House as a livid father berating his son for his taste in music. That was a satire of Neidermyrer excoriating a frat member in ROTC class for wearing a pledge pin on his uniform
    Animal House is an old movie I get it. You are a great and experienced guitarist. I wish these videos weee around 10 -15 years ago when I was in a Metallica Tribute band.
    You nail a few things I could not quite master
    I love the fix the band videos and u hope you keep doing them

    Saint Paul, MN here, how about this mild winter?!
    In my last and only real paying band, we had an MD. Musical director, by default or by choice, can improve the bands details, by first hearing rough sections, and then asking to drill them. So, 2,3,4,♫-again, 2,3,4. If all are not on board to a level of excellence and improvement, this can lead to friction.
    Great series, Mike, and good on y'all to Breeze for playing with spirit and attitude- 1st run with no train wreck. Hexellent!
    Keep on freeing in a rock world!! Ü ♫

    Switzerland gave us extreme metal legends Celtic Frost! Fun fact: Kirk and Rob of Metallica once did a cover of a CF song that was so bad that CF's singer felt offended. Anthrax did a great cover of their song "Dethroned Emperor" tho. Anyway, great band, worth checking out.

    The "what is that" part seems to be them paying homage to the video of the song. As seen on mtv when they played music videos
    Edit: its been said already so...you know already

    The "joke" is directly from the "We're Not Gonna Take It" music video, where Mark Metcalf reprises his role of Neidermeyer from Animal House, in which he gets in a guys face about his pledge pin. In the music video, he screams about a Twisted Sister pin. It's kinda meta.
