      And Noraly, if you happen to read this, the noise on the truck is called a “jake brake”, he was using the engine to slow down his descent

      Never ever mess up with border officers nor the police. You can get seriuos trouble or find yourself on the wrong side of a weapon or arrested. And you don´t want that for sure in most countries. You can make jokes at a border of smaller countries if you at least have the SCOTS with you. Or bigger.

    Finally in Honduras! The tower of the Cathedral in Comayagua is not the oldest, what they probably meant to say was that the clock is the oldest working mechanical clock in the Americas. It was working at the Alhambra in Granada Spain before it was brought over to the new continent. There usually is someone that can take you up to the tower, you probably went in at siesta time, lol. I know is not closed because a youtuber was just recently there. Im glad you crossed the border without any issues, the border and government offices are always intentionally vague to make people use the local "fixers", we call them "Tramitadores". Sometimes it is better to pay one of them, it makes things go so much faster. I avoid them, but some people prefer to use them to accelerate the process.

    • @paulfiguer6313

      Sorry. You dont know much about Honduras's history. The clock in Comayagua is not the oldst in America, IS THE OLDEST IN THE WORLD, WITH ABOUT 1000 YEARS OLD., AND STILL GIVEN THE EXACT TIME. You need to get more informed about Honduras.
      Anybody that want to see the clock, need to make an appointment with the person in charge of the care of the Church. The clock was a gift to Comayagua from one the Spain king Felipe over 300 years ago.

      The Howler Monkeys go nut’s when the trucks do that. I’ve found that they often hang out where the trucks make the most noise along the roads. You can hear them getting excited long before the truck comes along.

    • @Brrrap743
      @Brrrap743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      So how engine braking works is basically closing off the exhaust valves which is causing that noise. Now the pressure has to build up to a certain level before the valve will momentarily pop open allowing exhaust gases to vacate the pipe opening and closing opening and closing causing the pop pop pop sound. Semi tractors usually have six cylinders and engine brakes AKA jake brakes usually have a selection to choose either two four or six cylinders being closed off by the sound of it I would say he had all six closed. So every time he lets off the gas pedal it immediately closes those valves and soon as he steps on the gas again it allows them to open. There are no laws on engine braking through residential areas in South America, however when you get up here to North America you will only ever hear that sound in mountainous areas in non-populated areas as it is normally illegal within city limits as a nuisance noise disturbance.

    I felt actualy more save, than in other countrys.
    But my business trips are of course not to compare with Your journeys.
    To be honest, I often get fed up from travelling.
    But these are professional trips without enjoying anything.
    I like Your inspiring videos a lot, because my motorcycle trips usually only lead to the Alps, Pyrenees, or Abrutzen in Italy once a year.

    I loved it when you crossed the border but were unsure of whether to ride on the left or right of the road. That is exactly the same anxiety I feel sometimes despite all my years and experience. I always thought it was just my lack of confidence but with all your experience you did it too. Thank you Noraly.

    The truck that was making a strange sound, was using its engine brake(aka jake brake). It uses the engine to slow its self down in order to save the brakes on the truck.

    Thanks Noraly, great show as usual. The strange sound from the truck is a "Jake Brake", named after the guys the invented it, Jacobs, It is a compression brake, to go down long, steep hills while saving the mechanical brakes they basically open a valve that makes the truck engine work harder slowing down the engine and slowing the truck. The loud sound is the compression of the cylinders leaking to atmosphere (pop pop pop), this is in frequency with the engine speed. And the driver is using it correctly by keeping the RPM or motor speed down, it doesn't work as well at higher engine speeds due to increased inertia. Stay safe and happy travels!

  • @mesenteria
    @mesenteria ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The noisy truck was using a 'compression brake'. It functions as a vacuum brake by making the engine work against gravity. Most municipalities do not permit their operation, at least in the USA and Canada.

      very true but ive heard them use it a few time in the usa some states where its illegal are california colorado montana and oregon where people are tree huggers lol and have a different mind frame lol but where i live it is monitored but not illegal im in Tenn in some of the states its illegal you cant even pump your own gas here you have to self service so you see the mind set they are afraid in some of those states you might let a drop of fuel hit the ground so i guess they would rather there attendant lets a drop or two hit the ground lol

    • @mumblesbadly7708
      @mumblesbadly7708 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you mean that it functions as the REVERSE of a vacuum brake, as it relies on the compression of air (the reverse of a vacuum) against the pistons inside the cylinders acts like springs.

    The engine sound is a "Jake" (Jacobs engine brake) it holds the exhaust valves open very slightly to make the engine act as an air compressor therefore making it a "Brake" and is very noisy. In North America most places prohibit in city limits.

    I have to admit that I find these border crossings a bit stressful, though you handle them so well! The places look makeshift, and the processes seem ad hoc, as if they would be different if you came 10 minutes earlier or later!

    The very loud truck that sounded like it was" driving with a flat tire" has his engine brake (Jake Brake) on helps to slow him down and keep his speed under control so he doesn't over heat his actual brakes.

    That truck noise was an engine brake. It closes valves in the engine so that there is more pressure to slow the truck on a downhill run without relying on the brakes as much. Perfectly normal.

      Most of the fixers who are at the border post of Honduras are drug addicts and scammers, be careful and do not trust anyone who offers you help in exchange for money, when you arrive at the border post always ask for the immigration office, there they will give all the necessary instructions to carry out the entry and exit process and NEVER give your personal documents or passports.
