A few things I always mention on these reactions. Nanachi was helping Bondrewd because she was under the impression that they were trying to find a way to restore Mitty back to her human form. That's why Nanachi kept drawing pictures of Mitty. The moment she drops the drawing is the literal moment she lost hope that Mitty could be return to normal. Nanachi has been trying to kill Mitty for a long time and before each attempt she says goodbye to Mitty. It's been so long that her good bye now feels rehearsed and kinda cold, which is what we see at first. But when she sees Reg's incinerator pointed at Mitty she realizes that this time it's real, that's why she stops him and runs to Mitty for a last embrace and heartfelt goodbye.
You know, after following this series for so long, you kinda forget how disturbing it really is. Watching your first impression makes me go “oh right… this is not normal.”
This show is freaking brutal. This episode made me a hot, bawling mess. It was just horrible. Mitty finally received the mercy she so deserved. Nanachi is an amazing character. Her resilience and love for Mitty is touching.
My one word would be Ethereal. Which may seem strange, but I really can't describe how this show made me feel. It touched my heart in a way I cant describe. The music, the sense of discovery, the horror. it all makes me feel like I'm in some kind of dream. Very little media has made me feel this way. Watching AoT S4e21, Playing Nier Automata, and reading Berserk. All of these filled me with that same sense of Dreamlike beauty and horror. It's such a rare feeling, that when I find it, I treasure it forever. It's a feeling I'll never forget, and I love every second of it.
I see why MIA was hailed as a master piece and in all honesty I still think its underrated. The show starts off with this light, whimsical tone but quickly dives into incredibly intense and mature themes after like 4 episodes. It doesn't shy away from showing the physical and emotional toll that adventuring and survival take on the characters, ESPECIALLY when the main characters are children. So you have this contrast between this cutesy art style and dark subject matter creating powerful moments like Mitty's death. I don't think I've ever ugly cried at anything in a long time but when season 1 first aired and I got to this episode I was hysterical. Pair that with the CRAZY fucking ending song as the package floats to the surface, holy hell it was beautiful. The composer for anybody wondering isn't Japanese, he's an Australian man named Kevin Penkin. He wrote the entire soundtrack and has composed for other anime you might have seen as well including Shield Hero and Tower of God.
Hey Nia! Thanks for finally posting this. So worth it. The feels are amazing and heartbreaking. If you have the opportunity I would recommend watching the third movie. Mitty is an incredible character even for the brief time we got to spend with her. I think everyone that watched this episode was a sobbing mess.
- Poor Nanachi has certainly been through a lot. The Hollow does fear and hate Bondrewd (hence the escape), but ultimately being his little note-taking assistant thing was preferable to being an experimental subject - it's also hinted a bit that Nanachi had their own goal of curing Mitty.... - The technology used to spy on Mitty and Nanachi Is probably a relic of some kind. - I'm a manga reader and so cautiously optimistic about S2. The next arc is not a bad story, but I'm not sure it will adapt well to an animated format. I probably would have said the same thing of S1 though and the screen writer did a Great job

the movie is great, and the stuff coming in season two is wild and beyond what you've seen yet. That being said would love for you too watch A Silent Voice, a beautifully sad movie that is my favorite anime movie.

This is probably the saddest episode in any show, anime or otherwise. I have never seen anything alike before of since. Nothing prepares you for it, and through reactions you get to feel that not preparedness again and again till your very soul is completely depleated of energy, pretty much what you want. You wanted drama but then you don't want this, but still, that's why you're here as a viewer, it's what you wanted, right? And then by the end, you simply don't know anymore. All you feel is the true worth of this show: an insanely sharp cut into the utmost depth of sadness, on the very edge of suportability.
i guess the word grotesque was replaced with 😭😭😭😭.....lol.. are you ready for the movie...and season 2 for that matter...i wonder if the dark tone continues, because Anime has a tendency to do a total 360 with following seasons.. here's me hoping.

He's bad to the core) Compare Bondrewd to Ozen is Ozen nice, and only tries to help and learn them to survive) Just to sacrifce 2 kids, to find a cure for the Abyss. Uhm NOOO!! Then Torture Mitty, in Hacking off her limps, let it grow back. And do it all again. (He did that 9 times in fact). But Because, she is trapped in that body, she feels everything but cant react (only cry) he dont give a f@#$ about her. --------------------------------------------- Then there is Nanachi.. who survives the 6th layer encounter (Alltough changed a bit) Dedicates his life, to find a cure for Mitty. Then Reg and Riko came along. And when Nani saw Reg's Blast he asked him to set Mitty free. And now.. we are ready to dive into "Dawn of the Deep Soul" And im also excited for Season 2. ❤❤❤ Ray.
However dangerous, however horrible, the abyss draws you in oh also if you want to watch another masterpiece, please please please watch violet evergarden, I can't recommend it enough -Also don't worry, it isn't anywhere as dark as made in abyss but it will play with your emotions -also also for some people it takes a couple episode to get hooked properly and although I think you would like the show, if you aren't quite interested at first please continue

'The OA' is a very similar show. Not as cute but weirder and just as dark. Even tho it's live action I feel like it's the only similar show.
