@@DrNo64 you guys finished? I couldn't get past the 180 bend part cause it didn't want to work. I wanted to use blender and 3d animate but I don't think its worth it at this point. Its just a headache to me.
@@Bluejoltyt Same. I didn't finish either for the same reason. it seems like blender (or any software for that matter) never wants to just work with me. at that point, I just mapped the texture of the earth onto a UV sphere and called it a day.

well it's the same but only the first steps of making a circle are diffrent
the flat one is way harder
because you need a nice atmosphere and you need to make the bottom better otherwise it's gonna look like a plate
very impressive but can you create a lagfree minecraft server
*just imports a minecraft world from minecraft to blender, adds people in it and synchronizes it with the movement of real players with like idk some super mega code thing and then synchronising the rendered version with the minecraft world with blender and there you go. Something that totally works and doesn't just cause some huge lag*

For anyone else struggling:
You need to change the X and Z rotations in object properties menu to 90 THEN go to edit mode and change the Y rotation to 90. Then just follow on with the rest of the video. Hope this helps :)

These flat textures were created from spheres and made to fit in a plane, usually the poles getting more stretched out horizontally as you get closer to them. So I am not surprised they fit nicely on a sphere (given that IS their origin).
See? The earth is actually flat, until you make it into a sphere
@@NeilRoy I think you're missing the context. It is impossible to unfold a sphere to a perfect plane. Try experimenting yourself, take a plastic ball, cut it in half and try flattening it out into a sphere. It's impossible to do unless if you tear certain parts to make it fit (which is impossible). That's why our current world map is merely a mapping of the spherical map, it's not entirely accurate but it suffices for now

Tip: If the simple deform modifier doesn't work for you (it didn't for me) just add in a UV sphere and import the texture onto it.

If you are having trouble with bend, make sure the loop cut you just did is along the y-axis

@@alan_decker i was struggling so much but i found the solution
so
step 1: Go into Object mode (TAB)
step 2: You click add > image > image as planes
step 3: Turn back into Edit mode (TAB)
step 4: (Make sure you have the object selected
step 5: R + Y (Click ENTER as well) then in the left bottom corner it will show (Rotate) click the ( > ) arrow
step 6: Input -90 in (Angle)
step 7: while having everything selected make sure to go to (Modifier Properties) and add (Subdivision) (SimpleDeform with 180 degrees) & another (SimpleDeform with 360 degrees) make sure to have the last one to have it on (Z axis)
once you're done/ go to (Material Properties > Settings and unselect (Backface)
step 8: Click Object mode (TAB) and click (viewport shading) it's the button that renders the result (it's a circle button and has 4 buttons of them in total)
Last step: Right click on the Earth Object and click (Shade Smooth)

Yeah, he lost himself too much in details, applied the subdivision too early and then could not continue procedurally - apparently that really costs a lot of time in the end .On the plus side: Rigging, nice drivers for animation, and an enormous boid particle system ...

Just in case anyone else is not getting the same results with the "simple deform" modifiers make sure when you import the stupid plane it has rotations of 90, 0, 90 like you see in the vid (if you pause at the 5 sec mark). Those rotations are for the plane in OBJECT mode. Now that you're set, go to edit mode and follow the video as usual.

I have an issue with simple deform, only the Z axis seem to have an effect on the plane :/, anyone with the same problem ?
@@carameldore3067 yep, that's how it was for me, too until i noticed in the vid that his plane is rotated outside of edit mode, like I pointed out in my original comment.

@@mishiko7211 first go to edit mode. Then press a ,r,90. Then add subsurf, then add the 2 with mode bend. Select x and -90 and z -360 if you want real earth landscape. Else it will be mirrored. Or it was mirrored for me.

Update for new version of blender
For the plane not blending
(i'm a noob don't ask me anythings) It work for me.
-Import image as plane
-in object mode / item (right corner) /Rotation / set X to 90° and set Y to 90°
-add "Empty" Sphere
-do the subdivision like in the tuto
- Add SimpleDeform 1 / Bend -angle 180 on axe Z and set "Origin" to empty
- Add SimpleDeform 2 / Bend -angle 360 on axe X and set 'origin" to empty
Earth should be okay now.
-Continue the tuto
after apply the modifier
-Delete the empty sphere
- right click on earth "set origin" Geometry to origin (if you don't you may have difficulty to make some rotation).
I hope it save you some time.

If the bending is not right make sure you are in edit mode when rotating.
1- Add image
2- Tab to edit mode ***
3- Rotate 90 on Y-axis (R+Y+90)
4- Cur on the X-axis(red line) ***
5- Add sub div
6- Add simple deform
with bend selected it should work

@MTA Fanner good for you. It literally takes me 2 months to make plane to sphere part. I just missed a little information, and after more understanding of rotation, I finally can use that deform modifier.

For more realism- On the cloud material, add a 'layer weight' node as the factor to a mix shader. Add a transparent bsdf into the bottom input of the mix shader and plug the principled bsdf into the top input. Change output on Layer Weight node to 'facing' and set the blend to about .7
