      Honestly, never do repairs. I work for a roofing company and you can always go through insurance and get a full replacement. I see people way too often do repairs, insurance company then thinks that that is acceptable for the homeowner and they will only pay for more repairs. Depending on how close the match is, that is why you see so many patched roofs that are not aesthetically pleasing. Even if the insurance company originally only approved repairs, you can send a shingle out to itel and if it is discontinued, a really bad match, changed from english to metric, etc etc, they will end up replacing the full roof.

      @@seanspreckelsen3496 I just got this house knowing it will need a roof. To KEEP my insurance I have to replace missing shingles. At the moment I am waiting for next tax season to hopefully replace roof. Until then, this video is a GODSEND to some of us.
      Plus some people will get higher rates claiming the roof on insurance. This video is for folks who don't NEED an entire roof yet. ALWAYS do repairs anytime you can and save your money.

    So, we had a sever windstorm event here last week. I lost three spruce trees on my property and two shingles off my roof. I have never attempted to repair my roof, always called a roofer. For just two shingles, not a complicated repairs, the roofer wanted $240 US. I found your video, watched it closely three times, then went out and purchased a bundle of shingles, some adhesive, the pry tool and went to work. Had BOTH shingle repairs completed in under 90 minutes. Could have been faster but I took my time to make sure I had it right the first time. Two caveats: first, my shingles are 39inches, apparently the new standard is 36 inches. So with some directions from Lowes staff, I had to do some creative fitting (had to cut one shingle at 22 inches and one at 17 inches then "butt" them together) to do a proper repair but the repair went well. Second caveat, the roofing tar in a tube is VERY MESSY for a first time user, so you need be careful. In any event, the repairs were successful and I thank you for this helpful video.

    Very simple and clearly explained. I only lost about 6 shingles in a 85 mph windstorm in Utah last week. A roofer quoted me $600-700! He said it was normally a $200 job, which seemed more reasonable. But he also said they were super busy and a month out. I’m sure they’d rather do a $10000+ new roof than do little repairs unless they were slow. I used to do siding, so I figured it couldn’t be that hard. I already know how to swing a hammer.
    Thanks!

    Agreeing with Madkilljoy and others -- this video is well done. I was going to call someone to replace a shingle or two, but after watching this video, I think I might try to do it myself. I do need that roof nail remover tool. It’s a big deal trying to get home repair estimates and help in this area, especially for small jobs. Congrats to Shannon. Even the white socks add to the excellent presentation.

    • @fordguyfordguy

      roofers are the most critical, negative, self important know it alls in all the trades!!! you can do a perfect roof job, put it on youtube, and in no time at all scores of guys show up to tell you what a crap job you did! And in full disclosure, there ARE a bunch of garbage videos out there.

  • @rshaddock

    Upskirt nailing is when it is easy to damage the shingle. You can prop the the tile up with a piece of wood, then focus on hitting the nail, not the tile.

  • @chestermicek
    @chestermicek 7 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    I gave this video a thumbs up because it was coherent, quick, and it satisfied the title. I see where a lot of perfectionists chose to make a negative comment about the lack of tar paper/felt. To repair that flaw the whole roof must come off. That is not the title of this video. I need to replace one damaged shingle, and now, I think I know the tools I need as well as the technique that I'll use. Thanks, Shannon. You did enough, but you could have added your name, your phone number, your location, and the name of your business.

    • @thebeststooge
      @thebeststooge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I gave it a thumbs down because my roof (many are like this in all of the houses I have lived in) if you remove a nail you better plug its hole with some tar or it will leak since the nails go through the wood and water plus new hole
      is a disaster. Really, make it a habit to do a new hole and find all old nail holes and put some tar in them.

      I.finished this phase of 3 weeks ago..Turned out nice except a few things. It's hard to describe. However I ended up.cutting a straight line down about six foot from the side of the roof. There were several obstacles here. I ended up with.a half inch trench on the right side going down..I know that I should have staggered the shingles..It was too late. So I put some tar down over existing trapper and swept up the asphalt
      (Sand) which was like little roller bearings..oh yes..these little thing need to be constantly swept up and disposed up as they are a dangerous (slip and fall hazzard).I put the above sandy particles in the half inch water trench. Actually it's almost unnoticeable from road and seems to let the water fall down. The next part will be done different. Also next time.I will.stay up with the safety factors.
