Your polarities were switched, i did the same thing, my thin wires started to smoke n burn so i disconnected quick and was about to give up then i figured i hooked it up incorrectly and checked the board again and saw that i misunderstood the labeling and so i correctly wired and boom, working like magic!

Please tell me you checked the polarity of the pins on the socket, and didn't depend on the colours on your drone plug?

good morning Mel i use a 12v telly made by Cello, on ebay they are around £120 they come for home use and the power supply takes 230v and reduces it down to 12v and the connector is widely available to use via a 12v supply in the van either cigar lighter or direct connection hope this help's mark.

I think technically, you can modify almost all TVs to work at 12Vdc (keep in mind that the car's voltage is usually over 14Vdc), you simply need to find the output location of the internal power supply and neutralize it and replace it with a voltage regulator.
If the TV consumes more than 12 volts, you can use a simple voltage boost circuit (direct current to direct current).
It's a waste to throw a screen that has good components for other purposes, such as using the lighting. Just remove the LCD...
Another thing, if you isolate the speakers from the TV (use an external audio system), you should not worry about the thickness of the wires, unless it's a huge screen or a particularly powerful backlight (and even then the light can be reduced).
    Have a good health.
    Enjoyable to watching you!

I did the same thing to a dad player, it had a 12v wall wart. I double checked the polarity, really important when hacking dc devices. I only had a 9v power supply to hand, I thought it'll be fine, eorst that can happen is not enough voltage and it won't power up. Wrong, fail, I "let the smoke out", skip fodder. But its true a lot of 240v consumer electrics, especially AV are dc 12, 9, 6, 5, 3v. Its all good fun. I power up little 12v PA systems for off grid electro gigs with mobility scooter batteries. Boot sale speakers and 12 amplifier pcbs off ebay for the price of a four pack of lager.

I know it’s too late now cos you fried it but did it have an external transformer on the power lead? If the output of that was 12v DC you could have cut that off and not gone inside the TV.
A voltage regulator would have been a good idea plus a check that it wasn’t 12v AC. Still gotta hand it too you for plugging it in while the cable was live. You should change your middle name to Danger 🤩👍🏼

Hi Mel, I bought a rechargeable Cello 12v TV about 3 years ago and it's been great. I love knowing that when I use it in the evening, it's not taking any power from my leisure battery. I can charge it from a from my solar panels via a 12v socket or from 220vac when on hook up. On start up you get a choice of screen brightness to choose from: Low= 10-11 hours usage, Medium= 8-9 hours or High= 5-6 hours. My only complaint would be the inbuilt speakers however my getaround is connecting the headphone socket on the TV to my rechargeable bluetooth/aux input speaker.
"If this is something that might interest you"😂 I can try and find the amazon Web link for the unit I bought.
What a shame that your little experiment didn't work, I feel your pain.

My 2 cents is. Don't throw TV away. It may be just a blown fuse inside the tv. 🙂
Years ago I modified a printer to run off the car's 12V socket. I bought an adaptor though. It had 12VDC IN and it had voltages ranging from 3Vdc-24V dc OUT depending on the application plus five or six types of plugs to suit different brands.

@@RemusKingOfRome It's 720p, but it's not really noticeable, suppose it depends how close you get to the screen. Even when I've used it to project on the side of my tent at about 90 inches it's still been decent. Also I think you can still get the original which was SD, though there are lots of other makes that claim to be full HD, some are cheaper but lack the built in battery. It works well for Netflix , TH-cam & Amazon over 4G and you can also download films to it to watch later.

When the electrical shops open go and look at TVs which have an external power supply ( like a lap top) the power pack will tell you the output so you need to find one that transforms down to 12-13v dc you can then just make up a 12v lead to the socket on the back of the TV. You are not going to be breaking any seals and it's then universal so can either run on mains or battery. Good videos mate really enjoy them.

Geeez Mel the only true way to convert to DCV is to plug the TV into the Mains and read the DC voltage after the Bridge rectifier ,,, (The 4 diodes that are stacked after the transformer ) anyhow then if its 12 volts on your DC volt meter then remove the bridge rectifier so as to not have any back voltage then connect the 12 volt with the correct polarity ,,
Im a ham radio Tech class rain operator ,,,,, I could have done it for you but it would have cost to much to ship it to Australia ,,,, easier to buy a 12 volt one from the start
OR find a TV that has one of the black Walmart transformers on it ,, they have 12 vdc input ,

What went wrong then Mel? Seen Guys are successfully doing it, did you need to solder the neg an positive an then plug cig lighter in? Confused why you couldn’t do as it’s not just a cowboy trick if it says in the back 12v upgrade then it should work?????

Have a look and see if you've just blown the fuse in the 12v plug head (assuming that there is one there). If you've got the polarity wrong then one of the fuses should have popped before any of the components on the TV.

I think it best to try and find forum dealing in tv repairs, there might be some wiring diagrams that could be followed or give a clue. That two pin could mean anything, for instance if bridged perhaps the mains lead now because a 12volt input, who knows.

Mel, If its going to run off 12vdc there would be a connector somewhere in the power supply section only for this..... It would be a high current connector as the LED display would need heaps of current to operate..Not that pissy little one you connected to. Also the 12 volts would need to be converted to the various voltages required to operate the TV. That would require inverters, bucking and boosting types to provide the voltages which would be +15v and - 15 volts and a hefty 5 volts to run the LCD display and the comp logic circuits inside the unit for all the digital controls....That little connector would not provide the currents for all this......

I'm not sure what volts the TV actually run on after the 230 has been transformed down - you could connect (if it is 12 v) directly after the TV transformer has brought the volts to 12v

Worth trying but I am surprised at how expensive that TV was. I bought a "mains" 19.5 inch TV with a DVD player for my camper from Kogan for just over $100AUS and it was actually 12v with an external mains adapter so I can run it off the mains or the 12v battery. What you tried is OK but you need to know a bit more about circuitry before delving in.

I think it was ok but you probably got the polarity wrong. + and - the wrong way around. Just because the drone connector was a certain way it wouldn't mean it was the same on the TV circuit board. A little investigation on the circuit board would have suggested the right connection. Alternatively connecting up to the mains and then putting a multimeter on the connector.

I think the lesson you have taught everybody is don't believe everything you watch on youtube.
But i think you had polarity wrong way round, with those batteries some have swapped polarity to the shape but the colours stay the same though.
Its possible just connecting the battery with the wrong polarity damaged before connecting 12v.

Hi Mel! In NZ have very similar TVs, Been there done that, or my mate did to my one. Blew because the positive and negative where connected wrong, bang. What did I do, took it back to the shop all innocent like and said its not working. No arguments not worth their while, just replaced it with a new one. The particular box store has their own brand which they give a 3yr warranty on, the nice thing is they restart the 3 yrs warranty when they replaced the TV, and the replacement one 2 yrs later the audio went kaput, and they replaced that with a newer later model. It has been 7 yrs since I have bought a 24 inch TV, the 3 yrs warranty will be ending in September 2020, so fingers crossed this one goes wrong before September then I can get a new replacement and another 3 yr warranty.

Mel, sorry to be smart after the event, but you probably had reverse polarity there. No everybody uses that connector the same way. If you had put a voltmeter on the connector before applying power it would have been possible to check. I’d still go for another one, because it ought to work, it’s not rocket science. It’s possible you could even repair the one you broke, it’s probably just a fuse and/or a diode that has failed. The rest of the telly will be fine. Don’t give up too easily! kind regards, K33F
