Manz’s was my local pie shop, l go back to Peckham now and then just to relive my childhood, we do have cafes in Southend but it’s not the same. I remember sawdust on the floor and church like pews to sit on, plus the marble topped tables, those were the days. Neither of my grown up children like liquer, I think you have to be a Londoner to appreciate the green gravy!! ❤
Barbara, I agree the pie and mash in Southend is not great, there is now a Cookes in Chelmsford. I used to go to Chapel St Market to Manzes when I was young. The Cookes one is Chelmsford is pretty good 👍

Oh my god, Pie and Mash🤪🤪 I used to get that from Cooke’s in Shepherds Bush before it shut….its the best meal in the world. Totally agree with lashings of chilli vinegar….I could eat that every day. Totally agree, we want to go but the trains are prohibitively expensive and unreliable and you're not guaranteed a seat even if you reserve one. I used to go to London loads years ago when it was British Rail.

40 odd years in Australia but fist stop when ever back in UK is Pie&mash lol I think you have to have grown up with it to appreciate how much you miss it! I make it at home and have even got the Liquor spot on but the pies are imposable to replicate! My great gran used to feed me her stewed eels and liquor as a toddler. Made my mouth water as soon as Sharron put that vinegar on!
Great video of you out and about showing us various parts and shops of London I will never get to go to so thanks. Seems public toilets are few and far between these days wherever you are/live. Not very good. I'm in Sheffield. Love your home. xx
Almost crying with laughter here at Martin's reaction to Harrods Christmas decoration prices! When things are 'real glass' or come with a 'silver ornament' as described by lovely Sharon - his reaction of 'Well, that makes it all better' is priceless! Exactly what my beloved would say - and has said on several occasions in Harrods. Mind you, it's a lovely experience even if you only browse. He was usually not there when I went back to shop for real! The perils of working in London. Thanks for the memories. x

Omg that bought back memories in years gone by ,Manzies pie shop in portobello road ,loved them,miss it so much since moving from London to Spain ,tried the frozen but def not the same ,also loved jellied eels.and when I was a kid once a week in our local manzies they would do a bowl of soup for a shilling.that was in the 1950s ,yummy
Mate you were in Walworth !!! Thats my home patch! Arments is the best pie and mash in London !! They are online so you can get it sent home !! While you were there a couple of roads up was East Street market. If you walked from the Elephant down Walworth road you walked past Baldwins, a health food shop, its been updated but its still an old London herbalist shop where you can walk in and get a glass of Sarsaparilla, it tastes like nothing else you have ever had. They still sell it in pints or halves and it really is a taste of old London !!!

First Class, We love it. Loved your trip to London with the grand kids, so well behaved as always, Love your values Harrods lol Loved the Toy Shop, its how I remember the UK at Christmas.
You have to do the tim tam slam with those biscuits. Bite the opposite corners then use it as a straw to suck up your tea or coffee and then eat it quick before it falls apart.

I don't know about you, but Martin's dialogue and Sharon's step-by-step prep and cooking are exactly what I'm gunna need to watch for me to get really comfortable with this 'baby' 😆 ! Their instructions are spot-on.
Think the thing I most want to cook are roast spuds!!
Woolwich SE18. Manzes Pie Shop, late 60s/early 70s. My family were from Walworth so bought up on pie, mash & liquor and jellied eels 🤢 (or 'pink meat and green gravy' as I called it as a kid!).
The tiles, mirrors, bench seats and marble-topped tables, even the old vinegar bottles ...couldn't replicate that atmosphere now if they tried.
Know people where I now live who put their orders in for Pies to bring home to freeze when anyone goes 'home' to London.
I'm looking forward to using my Cosori a lot as there's only 2 of us now. Hoping 'she's ' gingko be my new BFF!!!

As an expat Londoner this takes me back and thanks for explaining the history behind this and the importance of a recipe being true to that history. My Mum used to love Jellied Eels too ! Something I couldn’t quite get into lol !

I was in harrods last week, you should have gone to the food hall, i got a prawn cocktail, Large prawns, served in a glass dish, only £6, delicious and plenty of, the glass dish comes in handy as a candle holder 😊

We love the stuff and lashings of Liquor (no gravy allowed near us LOL) as babies we were started on just the mash & liquor then built up to the pie as we got older and yeah spoon and fork thats all thats needed. Great video, ohhhh pie & mash!! I love it. There’s a shop in East London that delivers pie, mash and liquor to cafes miles away. I’m in Essex now and a cafe a couple of miles from me delivers it. On the odd occasion I have a bit of “The East End” in my house. Never tastes the same as eating it where it’s made but still good.
I’ve never fancied Harrods so never been in there. I went to Hamleys a lot when my nephew was small but it isn’t worth the hype. Congratulations to your son and daughter in law to be and thanks for this video.

Oh I have always wanted to try pie and mash with liquor. After watching this we had pie, mash and gravy which was yummy but I would love to try some proper liquor. I can get vinegar online but I want to go to a proper pie and mash cafe and maybe try some eels. I love conger eels so I will like them. Bless you both x

Hi lovelies. From Bristol. I was born in Tottenham. We lived for pie and mash. Love it miss it No Pie and Mash shops in Bristol. 😒My mum who s in spirit was given the recipe. We moved to Harlow in Essex. And mum tried to open a shop. But the council refused saying it would bring the tone down f the town. Funny thing is most Londoners moved to Harlow. The pastry is made with water crust pastry. Just like pork pie pastry. 😊 so jealous right now. 😒💚

I've heard of tim tams, also I love Vegemite. Yes USA do have cadburys chocolate, they bought cadburys off the British quite some years ago now. Put bubble wrap all over your windows and doors, it keeps the heat in. Loved going out and about with you, I couldn't do it myself these days though. Yes but believe it or not your Cadbury chocolate still is made to a different recipe than ours. I was so shocked when I tried some of the American version of Cadbury milk chocolate

I had pie mash and liquor most weekends has I lived in Brixton , I make my own mince pies also make my own liquor too, love lots of vinegar on mine , enjoy 😊
My mum used to do her own eels and liquor and make the liquor with conger eel heads. I love pie and mash and eels.
Your Xmas decorations looks very nice. Thank you for taking us to London. I haven’t been to hamlets since our sons were young. So maybe about 40 years ago. How time flies. Is your shoulder caused by holding your camera out. Try ice as well as heat. Alternately. It takes swelling down.
The second toy shop you went to ,just beautiful window displays,& having young people demonstrating the toys was just perfect. A big thank you for taking me to these places,when I was in London in 2007 in August ,we went on The Big Red Bus, but didn’t see these other places.
