Yeah, he played centre back in the second half of his career when he didn't have the legs to do all the running required of a fullback anymore. He was an outstanding centre back as well but as Left Back he was simly the best. IIRC Maldini moved to centre back for the '99 season -initially because Milan changed to playing a Wing Back system so Maldini was moved to play on the left side of 3 centre backs. However, I think he went back to playing Left Back for a few years after that.

Smallest of contacts or even no contacts and the players go down today! These divers would've had nightmares playing against the likes of Maldini back in that era! Not only are they not coming up against defenders with the quality of Maldini, Baresi, Nesta, Costacurta, Cannavaro, Sammer, Aldair, Adams, Keown, Stam, McGrath etc, they are playing on much better pitches, do not have to contend with the tackle from behind, and are generally afforded much more protection by the refs.

The only reason why Utd's defensive record has been good is mostly because of De Gea and Mourinho's cautious approach.
