    Great! A swedish oldtimer like me don´t usually expect much when seeing swedish fiddle tunes played on guitar. But this is absolute top class - just close your eyes and listen. These two have caught not only the quite tricky melody/rythm, but also touches the inner spirit of old swedish music. Really amazing! Maybe a bit too fast for Polska dancers, but as sheer music, it´s just great!

    • @peterfriedman2830

      Taste is a very personal thing. Having things 'all one way' probably looks a bit unrealistic and improbable that nobody among the 92,000 that have viewed it so far would have disliked it. So while it's great that you and I and 1,200 others unreservedly appreciate this performance, so it's probably also perfectly ok that we have a 'range of responses'. And the fact that you care enough to say what you said is probably also a good sign too, IMHO.

    • @edeledeledel5490
      @edeledeledel5490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peterfriedman2830 I just can't see anything that would have provoked dislike. I would have thought that anyone that actually saw the clip when scanning around TH-cam, i.e. two young people with acoustic guitars in a home setting sitting comfortably on a settee, and thought "That's worth viewing" and then viewed the clip would not have been disappointed in any way. What were they expecting? But I suppose it takes all sorts.
      By the way, perhaps I'm biased, because I have bought everything Molly has recorded in the last four years...Olympia WA is currently my favourite song, closely followed by Standing on the Moon.

    Beautiful music and beautifully played. Thanks for sharing, Peter.
    This cadenza in the B-Part sounds a lot like some late baroque music written by Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello for a fairly unknown instrument called "Gallichone" or sometimes "Colascione".
    Yet it does sound very good on a steelstring guitar, too, especially when played by such artists.

      Yeah, the 'duetting' on this is kinda uniquely amazing. The only thing I've ever seen which falls into the same category (although in this other case it's hybrid Gypsy/latin jazz guitar, rather than folk) is Andreas Oberg and Frank Vignola doing an absolutely insanely creative 'jazz lesson' performance of Dorado Scmitt's classic 'Dorado's Bossa' (also known as the Gypsy Bossa) which includes some rather jarringly 'croaky'/hoarse (but nonetheless inspired) scatting by Oberg th-cam.com/video/h6VqJDc66oA/w-d-xo.html

      I had never given this any thought before, but you're absolutely right, guitar duets are definitely unusual, especially in terms of folk material. This iazz one below that I commented on 5 years ago had already had 6 TH-cam years and by the look of the video quality, it had quite possibly already been made available on VHS several years earlier still. And in a particular sense, it's actually just like this one from Molly and Patrick, in that it's actually a proper duet, rather than just lead guitar backing up rhythm guitar all the way through the song, and not even just with each player alternating between lead and rhythm: there is a section where both musicians are weaving each others' quite different lead parts together. th-cam.com/video/h6VqJDc66oA/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks Ralph, I am not in the least properly acquainted with all of the important figures and works of the 60s English folk revival, so I had never heard this Renbourn piece th-cam.com/video/YsSvXDDGUAo/w-d-xo.html before, but you are absolutely spot on, it has a lot in common with the Molly and Patrick performance. John sounds a bit 'rushed' with the fretting, but folk revival guitar was often all about exciting us with new heights of speed and technique as well as introducing new audiences to old songs. Nonetheless, there were approaches at the time which kind of went in the very opposite direction and were instead more interested in exploring techniques which introduced more distinctive timbres and textures instead of just relying upon dazzling speed and intricacy, such as Nic Jones th-cam.com/video/KlFKwY_YgZ4/w-d-xo.html although I am sure Nic would be more than happy to see John's guitar skills as beyond his own (Nic has never had any respect whatsoever for his own guitar capabilities, even in his/their heyday)

      This is one of those performances where it isn't the level of difficulty or technical mastery that catches your attention, but the extent to which Molly, at various moments, seems to be in a world of her own, with the music just flowing out of her fingers without the slightest need for any kind of effort or concentration.

      She is definitely a guitarist's guitarist, but Patrick actually does a really good job of keeping up! They are both very deserving of tribute, floral or otherwise! Cliff, I just watched some of your videos. Looks like you've got some strong material there! Tip: your guitar volume is drowning out your singing so much that a listener will struggle to make out the lyrics. This doesn't matter so much in the case of well-known songs or very chorus-based 'singalong' material, but it's a really important thing when it comes to newly-written or unfamiliar material which has verse-based, narrative-style lyrics. When the songs you sing have something that you really want to say, it's much more important than usual that the listener can easily work out exactly what you are saying, which is not the case in what I watched. Rather than you having to sing more loudly, or having to play the guitar more quietly, neither of which may be things that you feel comfortable with, the problem can be fixed by miking yourself up to pick up the vocals just a bit more closely.

    Peter, thank you for posting this. I do wish you had used a couple of quality microphones, though, instead of the internal mics of your camera. The sound is a bit thin and contains some natural reverb from the room which could have been mixed in with the more sonorous close-up sound from two good mics set in about two feet from the guitars. Always a critic out there, huh! :)

      Hi, I didn't get involved in creating this video. There's a comment amongst those below which says that it was produced at Billy Strings's place in Nashville. It says that Molly was staying with Billy and Billy's GF. Here is a video of Billy playing in front of the same wallpaper, which, by pure coincidence, I commented about, four months earlier than when this question of where the video was filmed came up: th-cam.com/video/p5kthRxgINk/w-d-xo.html
