We’ve been taught that it is because of "religion-fueled" linguistic choices of the Bible translators. In our English translations (and other languages), we found the word "fornication". But the truth is that this word appears NOWHERE in the original Greek texts. Here's the explanation: Whenever we read the words fornication and sexual immorality in your Bible, the actual Greek word that appears in the original text is Pornea. Now here's the funny thing: no one knows for sure what that word actually meant to the biblical authors (although in modern Greek it simply means Prostitution). That's why many translators decided to use "sexual immorality", which is a generic term (it's like saying "petty crime". Unless there is a corresponding list of defined acts, it doesn't tell us what precise acts are concerned). So how do we know what is considered Pornea in the eyes of God? Is there a list of prohibited sexual acts somewhere in the Bible? Some scholars have suggested Old Testament passages such as Leviticus 18, which provide a list of prohibited sexual acts. And in NONE of them "sex before marriage" is mentioned. NONE! As for how the word fornication made its way into our bibles, this happened when it was decided that the Scriptures should be translated into Latin. The translators chose to render Pornea by the Latin Fornicatio, thus naming a specific sexual act in an effort to prevent Christians (Catholics) to engage in sex before marriage, which at the time was condemn by the Church authorities. Sex before marriage is not necessarily the best and wisest choice for any human being, but we DO have the God-given freedom to engage at our own risks (same as for sex after marriage) provided we do no harm to our neighbor. God specifically condemns a number of sexual acts in the Bible, and sex before marriage is not one of them. Religion condemns it, but not the Bible in its original Hebrew and Greek texts.
