this scene was awesome because it shows how cunning the Devil is in this movie. You know he had this whole thing planned out from the beginning just by the way she so willingly gives her soul to him. He completely broke her only to rebuild her in his name.

I liked it. I really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't just a bunch of lame jump scares. Those types of movies can be ok sometimes, but as far as horror movies the industry has gotten lazy and relies on the jump-scare too much to the point that the movies no thought to them. It's just an hour and fifteen minutes of loud noises and a dark screen punctuated by something jumping out of the dark.
Fun fact: Director said that working with Black Philip was the hardest part of making this movie. Cause he was a massive 200lb poorly trained goat and it was hard to get him to do what they wanted. (plus actually being Satan probably didn't help either).
I do livestock rescue and I have a bunch of goats. An in-tact male is a monster to control. Totally makes sense why goats became aligned with evil. I've had 1800 pound bulls that were easier to handle.
Goats are clever and observant animals... A 200lb. human cannot hold their own, against a 200lb. animal.... Just ask the actor, "Charlie" almost hired, during the filming.... Also, Charley's owner said his goat did everything expected, of him.... He was creepy, giddy, bouncy, and yet still, when necessary... In addition, you don't train a 200lb. male goat; the trainer suggests, then bribes with treats.... The goat is the boss.....
I mean the goat already kinda looked like a demon, dark, big curled horns, hooves for feet and yellow eyes, especially in the scene where he stands up on his back legs
this scene was pure black magic. i like how the first time you watch it you might not even notice the little details -- the boot blurred in the background, the black glove on her shoulder. i really love the voice they gave the devil too. not like some booming growl but this soft, seductive whisper in a young man's voice. you have to imagine it's exactly the voice thomasin, who's probably never even had a friend her own age, would want to hear.
It’s a really amazing scene. The ominous tones of the film come to a chilling conclusion that stays with you on the drive home if you watched in the theater.
I still think that Black Phillip’s hoof taking one step into the frame and then the next being a spurred, leather boot is just about the coolest shot anyone could’ve dreamed up in my lifetime.

In Italy this wasn't a big deal as they had olive oil. But in places like Germany they did not and relied on butter as a staple. The Italian states would sell them rancid, awful tasting oil, at exorbitant prices. The rich would pay indulgences to the Church so that they could still eat butter. The poor just had to deal with it or face the threat of hell. The Church was making a killing off the indulgences, and so built up eating butter as this terrible sin. Butterlover was an insult. So yeah, butter played a significant part in the Protestant Reformation. The line "Wouldst you like the taste of butter" likely comes from this dark history of butter.
Everybody questioning why she'd sell her soul for so little seems to be missing the point; she already believes she's going to hell anyway at the beginning of this scene, thanks to the pious bullying of her family, especially her mother, and the fate that's befallen her.
scarlet2583 she never had any faith, at the begining she is the only that looks back at the village, the only one nostalgic about the UK. Her brother, on the other hand, is ostensibly tortured, dies, and does not give in.
Also, what's her alternative? Going back to the village? The second they found out her entire family had been reduced to bloody corpses she'd be tried as a witch anyway. In for a penny, in for a pound.
bigbowlowrong also part of the point, Satan is portrayed as cunning in the film, whomever he could not currupt, he killed. He put a person already weak in faith to chose between bending and being a martyr, she never had a chance. One last thing, a key aspect of christian theology is salvation by grace, no one being saved by merit, believing that, even though undeserving, you will be saved is a core point of the definition of faith. The boy also had a stark knowledge of his wickedness, as shown from his father teaching him about original sin.
I thought the brother went to hell. His religious babbling near the end of his life, and the sort of orgasm he had, suggested mocking to me as he 'gave in' to lust. And wasn't she already doomed to hell because she killed her mom and her famiy were no longer part of the church.

This is such a genius horror payoff. The whole movie you’re thinking, oh it’s allegorical, she’s going crazy. Oh brother, now she’s actually trying to get the goat to talk, she’s completely out of her... *Goat talks* AAAAAHHH!!!
@Jazz Warren Might have been a crazy person, with there being a logical explanation for everything in the film. Another version of The Witch never shows its hand, right through the end credits, leaving us to ponder whether it was all allegorical (or perhaps self-fulfilling prophecy) or whether the notion of the doings of a witch and the influence of the devil was there all along. To be honest, that's precisely what I was expecting, right up until this scene - which is what makes it so effective!
I was about to write something similar. I loved how the film went nearly the entire runtime without clearly answering what was really going on, and even threw us one final misdirect by not having Black Phillip answer back immediately - only to then have that "AAAAAHHHH!!!" moment! This is build-up and payoff at its best! It's one of the most satisfying instances I've enjoyed in a film...another one that still gets me to this day is how Planet Of The Apes (the original) helps build frustration in the audience as the protagonist over and over is treated as an unintelligent savage...until we get to "get your stinking paws off me you dirty ape!" Seeing the imperiousness melt away from all the ape folks in that moment is so very satisfying!

So much evil concealed in beauty. Satanic imagery is always painted as morbid (in its pure form it is) yet this film shows how cunning a deceiver is. The elegant voice is what makes this a thing of pure horror.

i don't understand why everyone is poking fun at the fact that black phillip asks if she likes the taste of butter. everyone is taking it at face value saying things like, "what? butter?" and "why butter? of all things!" i believe it is meant to resemble the deaire living lavishly and feasting such as a king would. because butter, especially back then, is used as the base of so many different foods, and can be especially fattening, it's utilized in this instance to stand for a full stomach at all times. i may be wrong, but i don't think that the demon would offer just butter, but rather what it comes in and the richness and substance of it. if you understand, that's great, and if you happen to disagree, feel free to talk with me but it.
Actually the Catholic Church would put a three days ban on any animal product. Butter was important for pretty much everything they cooked, so the Italians (I think it was the Italians but not 100% on that) would sell people some disgusting oil at really high prices. The rich would pay the church to be allowed to keep eating butter during those three days but the poor couldn’t. So they would just have to use the oil for three days. That being said, I think people are just trying to make a lighter mood or just make jokes. A lot of them made me laugh. I don’t think they’re actually downplaying the line or saying that it’s a dumb line or anything like that.
They were poor & starving, something as decadent as butter would be unheard of. I agree too with the restrictions placed by the Catholic Church but this family wasn’t Catholic, they went to America to flee that religion. However the puritan ways were equally stifling & every little desire being judged. Black Philip was just offering things that she obviously wanted or needed at that time: not just food but wonderful food, not just clothing but pretty clothes a young woman would want & most importantly I think, the promise of escape ( seeing the world).

This was so good - I actually think if I'd watched it alone I wouldn't have finished it, ever.... Even with my boyfriend, in terrible quality, streaming this in broad daylight I was pretty creeped out. And I agree Black Phillip's voice is sexy as hell. I love how he transformed -- you see the hoof walking past the book, then a boot, then you hear the other foot is now a boot rather than a "clopping" hoof -- I didn't catch that the first time I saw this
When I first watched this part of the film, I couldn't decide which was creepier; The fact that she tried speaking to a goat, or the fact that the goat ACTUALLY ANSWERED BACK... Amazing film!
The voice, the what looks like a left hoof followed by a cloaked and black shoe walking by, the gloved hand. I've never simultaneously wanted to see more of Black Phillip and praise the hell out of the decision that they kept him in darkness but showed just enough. One of the best representations of evil and the devil.
Still, starving or not, I'd renegotiate for a filet of sauteed salmon every three days and a bottle of semi-sweet pinot noir or cabernet savignon every week. My soul's worth _at least_ that much!
She's probably never even heard of any of that. Butter and pretty dresses are probably the absolute highest items of luxury she's ever seen or heard from.

When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." - Parting from this Biblical text, Satan, knew that in the 1630's the most expensive and most luxury someone could have, it was (for a girl in this case) a nice dress, and some butter, living in the woods and with this offer, she was completely drawn to make the pact. Notice how Satan never actually agreed in anything, as I read from another comment, he simply reaffirmed everything that she wanted.
Doing graduate school research on New England. Reading Cotton Mather, came across this line. Satan is temping a young man - “and how he should live deliciously, and have Ease, Comfort, and Money and sometimes threatening to tear him in pieces if he would not.” These writers did their research!
Fun fact, when filming this scene the goat who played Black Philip actually spoke the lines. The director was so impressed he decided to keep it in the film

I remember when I watched this in IMAX, the sound of Philips (the devils) voice in that surround sound was something I’ll never forget, SOO scary and unnerving, but also.. smooth, in a sinister way? Like horrifying but.. I kinda like it? Which I guess is what the devil is all about. But anyway yeah I’d sign it I would love to live deliciously LOL

I never thought I'd watch a horror movie where I'm happy that a character sells her soul for witchcraft and Satanism, but after the abuse her family put her through (especially those awful younger twins), it seemed like such a release for her.
Her soul is sold tho, she may live well in her life for now but she'll just be discarded like the rest in death. Don't kno bout you but a life of suffering followed by endless paradise seems like a better alt than eternal torment

She would have already believed she was going to hell anyway, from how they describe their religion in the movie, so I totally understand why she’d not really see heaven as an option at all anymore. That’s the part I feel like a lot of people who miss the release and catharsis of this ending don’t feel about this character.
To be fair the family faced starvation and had just traveled likely for months across the ocean only to end up complete failures in the new world. I’d imagine the dad was having a complete total breakdown because of his time inability to provide for the family after bringing them out there.

I saw it in the theatre. The atmospheric tension, coupled with the soundtrack, man…I felt creeped out for several days after. I randomly thought of the ending to this movie, I just had to come back and watch it.
I used to work in sales. I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but Black Philip uses some real high end sales techniques. 1) By never answering questions (notice he never answers any of her questions) and asking questions yourself instead you establish control of the flow of conversation and let the customer know that you're in charge and the conversation will be about whatever you want it to be about. 2) By asking yes/no questions you know you'll get a yes to you are priming the customer. When they've said yes several times (to what isn't important) they are much more likely to accept in the end. The brain works like that and good salesmen make use of that 3) Assume the sale. The best way to cross the finish line should be to assume the customer will buy and the final thing you do is sort out some practical detail like method of payment for example. Might be accidental but I doubt it.
One of the best scenes of any movie EVER... the tension is palpable... and whoever phrased that question in the script needs an award: Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?

Everybody questioning why she'd sell her soul for so little seems to be missing the point; she already believes she's going to hell anyway at the beginning of this scene, thanks to the pious bullying of her family, especially her mother, and the fate that's befallen her.
scarlet2583 she never had any faith, at the begining she is the only that looks back at the village, the only one nostalgic about the UK. Her brother, on the other hand, is ostensibly tortured, dies, and does not give in.
Also, what's her alternative? Going back to the village? The second they found out her entire family had been reduced to bloody corpses she'd be tried as a witch anyway. In for a penny, in for a pound.
bigbowlowrong also part of the point, Satan is portrayed as cunning in the film, whomever he could not currupt, he killed. He put a person already weak in faith to chose between bending and being a martyr, she never had a chance. One last thing, a key aspect of christian theology is salvation by grace, no one being saved by merit, believing that, even though undeserving, you will be saved is a core point of the definition of faith. The boy also had a stark knowledge of his wickedness, as shown from his father teaching him about original sin.
I thought the brother went to hell. His religious babbling near the end of his life, and the sort of orgasm he had, suggested mocking to me as he 'gave in' to lust. And wasn't she already doomed to hell because she killed her mom and her famiy were no longer part of the church.

@Jazz Warren Might have been a crazy person, with there being a logical explanation for everything in the film. Another version of The Witch never shows its hand, right through the end credits, leaving us to ponder whether it was all allegorical (or perhaps self-fulfilling prophecy) or whether the notion of the doings of a witch and the influence of the devil was there all along. To be honest, that's precisely what I was expecting, right up until this scene - which is what makes it so effective!
I was about to write something similar. I loved how the film went nearly the entire runtime without clearly answering what was really going on, and even threw us one final misdirect by not having Black Phillip answer back immediately - only to then have that "AAAAAHHHH!!!" moment!
This is build-up and payoff at its best! It's one of the most satisfying instances I've enjoyed in a film...another one that still gets me to this day is how Planet Of The Apes (the original) helps build frustration in the audience as the protagonist over and over is treated as an unintelligent savage...until we get to "get your stinking paws off me you dirty ape!" Seeing the imperiousness melt away from all the ape folks in that moment is so very satisfying!

i believe it is meant to resemble the deaire living lavishly and feasting such as a king would. because butter, especially back then, is used as the base of so many different foods, and can be especially fattening, it's utilized in this instance to stand for a full stomach at all times.
i may be wrong, but i don't think that the demon would offer just butter, but rather what it comes in and the richness and substance of it.

Yes, butter would have seemed like a luxury for a girl who had spent her whole life hungry.
Actually the Catholic Church would put a three days ban on any animal product. Butter was important for pretty much everything they cooked, so the Italians (I think it was the Italians but not 100% on that) would sell people some disgusting oil at really high prices. The rich would pay the church to be allowed to keep eating butter during those three days but the poor couldn’t. So they would just have to use the oil for three days.
That being said, I think people are just trying to make a lighter mood or just make jokes. A lot of them made me laugh. I don’t think they’re actually downplaying the line or saying that it’s a dumb line or anything like that.
Butter used to be a luxury ingredient.
They were poor & starving, something as decadent as butter would be unheard of. I agree too with the restrictions placed by the Catholic Church but this family wasn’t Catholic, they went to America to flee that religion. However the puritan ways were equally stifling & every little desire being judged. Black Philip was just offering things that she obviously wanted or needed at that time: not just food but wonderful food, not just clothing but pretty clothes a young woman would want & most importantly I think, the promise of escape ( seeing the world).

Even with my boyfriend, in terrible quality, streaming this in broad daylight I was pretty creeped out. And I agree Black Phillip's voice is sexy as hell. I love how he transformed -- you see the hoof walking past the book, then a boot, then you hear the other foot is now a boot rather than a "clopping" hoof -- I didn't catch that the first time I saw this

I've never simultaneously wanted to see more of Black Phillip and praise the hell out of the decision that they kept him in darkness but showed just enough. One of the best representations of evil and the devil.

I never thought I'd watch a horror movie where I'm happy that a character sells her soul for witchcraft and Satanism, but after the abuse her family put her through (especially those awful younger twins), it seemed like such a release for her.
Her soul is sold tho, she may live well in her life for now but she'll just be discarded like the rest in death. Don't kno bout you but a life of suffering followed by endless paradise seems like a better alt than eternal torment

She would have already believed she was going to hell anyway, from how they describe their religion in the movie, so I totally understand why she’d not really see heaven as an option at all anymore. That’s the part I feel like a lot of people who miss the release and catharsis of this ending don’t feel about this character.
To be fair the family faced starvation and had just traveled likely for months across the ocean only to end up complete failures in the new world. I’d imagine the dad was having a complete total breakdown because of his time inability to provide for the family after bringing them out there.

The entire movie was super scary and disturbing and it was authentically acted to! The ending was downright terrifying!
I used to work in sales. I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but Black Philip uses some real high end sales techniques. 1) By never answering questions (notice he never answers any of her questions) and asking questions yourself instead you establish control of the flow of conversation and let the customer know that you're in charge and the conversation will be about whatever you want it to be about. 2) By asking yes/no questions you know you'll get a yes to you are priming the customer. When they've said yes several times (to what isn't important) they are much more likely to accept in the end. The brain works like that and good salesmen make use of that 3) Assume the sale.
