Wow, this looks fantastic for 1991
Great visuals, mood, plot, sounds and music. The boss explosion effect is iconic, with the world map on it. It's also nice to see the stages progress in this natural way, where the end of one level leads straight into the next
You know a game has an awesome soundtrack when the creators even put the name of their tracks in the stage.

I remember watching your gameplay first and I'm amazed you're the only one who engaged in a beam struggle with the bosses since it's a pretty rad feature in this shooter

That last boss was basically the ghost of 4chan coming to retake the Earth.
This is the first exposure I got to Yack. Aka Yasuhisa Watanabe work back in the early 90s in Japan.
@TheCuster58 this WAS going to be Darius 3, actually, but Taito decided at the last minute to make it into it's own game. and those who made this gem of a game (some of them anyway) helped in the development of Border Down.
Darius 3 has been more know as Darius Gaiden.
When Player and Boss Has EX attack and active together, this just like Clash Attacks. Wow.

That's a bad ending, though.

It is a bad ending. Creators of the game has revealed that enemy's actual base is located on Mercury but all those Metal Blacks are charging in the wrong direction of Jupiter.

Metal Black is a Gun & Frontier spin-off game, because of "Project Gun Frontier 2" on the Opening scene, I think it's also a "Darius" spin-off game.

G-Darius is my favorite Shoot 'Em Up Game.
I've found it in my central park in one of Russian big cities (the southern ones) in 90s. All our childhood we strugglede to learn WHF is going on there. Those Acrade was absolutellutelly brutal, Now i've closed my geshtalt ))

And that isn't the only boss that's based on a real-life creature.
The other example is the third boss, "Daio and Gishiin".(Daio is the beetle, while Gishiin is the big creature.)
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Daio is based on a dung beetle, but Gishiin's inspiration, on the other hand, is far more obscure.
Gishiin is based on a prehistoric crustacean known as the "Opabinia".
(In fact, Gishiin practically IS a giant Opabinia!)
the only thing i don't like about this game is enormously big player ship's shot sprite.

Wardner213 Juat remember: you're on Earth and the big bad aliens kick your ass. So you make a ship like theirs and go to kick their ass. Oh yeah. There's some BS about nualones or some shit, but all that doesn't matter.
It's a shmup... It takes place in the Darius universe (an enemy from Darius makes a cameo in stage one) what more do you want?

As for the Shoot em up mentioned in the SNK Arcade Classics vol 1. I think u might be talking about Last Resort (another great game)
there is, It's called border down which is a spiritual successor of metal black.

Man this game was trash.
It has it's flaws, and I don't think it holds a candle to some of Taito's best shmups design wise, but it has it's moments and I think it's worth playing for fans of Darius. I definitely wouldn't call it trash.

it's a slow burn, but imo it's pretty brilliant. i actually didn't like it much the first time i played it, now i kinda agree with those saying it's taito's best. too bad about the translation.
oneida I've been playing it more lately too, and while I still think there's absolutely positively no way anything ever will top Rayforce, Metal Black is a really great game and I think the reputation it's gotten is very undeserved.
It has some (arguable) flaws, and I can see how it's not to everyone's tastes, but there's some absolutely fantastic level design, and it all really clicks once you get to the super tight and aggressive stage 4 and beyond.
+oneida Yeah, there's magical about Metal Black beyond the gameplay in where the simplicity of how it plays (it's solid) is part of the draw. It's everything. The surrealness. The soundtrack. The atmosphere. It all...Just works for some reason.
