On Campus Living at St. George's University

  • This video features your average dorm layout for veterinary and medical school here at SGU. I get asked housing questions sometimes or what dorms are like. I never lived on campus since I brought Toulouse (my cat) so hopefully this video gives a good idea of how large the dorms actually are and what it would be like living here your first 1 or 2 semesters.
    Feel free to drop any questions. I know I didn't really talk much about details, but I do have a good bit of knowledge about on campus life.

    About me: My name is Brittney Kilgore. I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA and am an alumni of the University of Georgia (UGA). I am currently a veterinary student at St. George’s Univeristy. SGU is located on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Although I’m a vet student now, I’ve been a vet tech for years. As I achieve my DVM, I’ve started this channel to document and share my life. I hope to oneday practice small animal / feline medicine. Until then, hope you enjoy my journey!

    Hi all current term 5 student here is an updated truth of the school:
    It used to be a good school. But it has been going downhill. I attend there and the quality of lectures / education has decreased since Dr. Modica sold his shares to a Chinese company -> as of 2018 BSCE an NBME exam is now worth 45% of the term 5 grade where about 40% of people fail. (Reported by upper termers that other schools have bought out rotations spots away from sgu and they had to be wait listed so now sgu is trying to eliminate the number of students by term 5) Ive seen my friends who are good people and potential good doctors fail because of their ambition for money with their new grading policy. the august class 2018 was 1,300 students! Say good bye to good quality of education. Overall, this school has become more of a profit margin/ cash cow for the shareholders. Whoever reads this i am sharing the information so that you are not misinformed by SGU. It used to be reasonable to be an MD through SGU back in early 2000s, but not anymore in 2019.

      Wow, thanks for the update. How on earth did so many of their class match into those awesome residencies? How did 930 students graduate this year? I believe that if you are going to become a doctor, research should be your strong suit.Meaning, that you should know all of the exams you will have to take prior to attending and the courses. Therefore, regardless of the how good or bad a professor is, you find the answer doctor. How will you ever correctly diagnose a patient correctly, if one cannot find the initiative to solicit outside sources to understand concepts better. I honestly do not believe your numbers are remotely accurate and I'm questioning if you are really a student at all. If you are, you sound as if you are struggling and seeking a scapegoat to blame your failures on, when you probably just need to stop worrying about everyone else and focus on you. Prime example: Why would a current student be trolling a channel for future students? Especially if you are in medical school (so you say). The reason you are probably struggling, is that you have no time management skills, hence trolling youtube instead of thumbing through Introduction to medicine III, or deciding your clinical rotations if you are in your 5 term or semester (same thing). Don't bash the Harvard of the Caribbean. This is the Top school in the Caribbean and is looked favorably upon by US hospitals. Study harder and stop making excuses, you just make sure you are in the 60% that do pass (according to your numbers only)

      @@johnrencher9554 My first comment was made because I do not consider the schools policy to be fair for students. I emphasize fairness. People who read it think that it is because I failed or failing but in the contrary, it is the frustration that I and other classmates have of sgu. To make changes to the curriculum for term 5 (last term on the island) was an obvious bottle neck effect to drop out students. Overall its not fair for students and it's frustrating to study not out of enjoyment but studying out of survival and afraid to be kicked out. Again, there are times that I forget that it is a for profit school.

    • @MV-qw2dw
      @MV-qw2dw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnrencher9554 and the numbers are very misleading. They accept spring semester about 600 students and fall semester about 1300 students. Overall for the year it is about 1900 students. But their residency placements is 930. So there is a huge gap.

    • @MV-qw2dw
      @MV-qw2dw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RamaDevi-cw4iq I do not recommend sgu tbh.
      When finding schools ask for the following : if classes are mandatory attendance (huge waste of time, so sgu does have mandatory attendance while other schools do not), Class size, curriculum, grading policy, NBME grading policy (final exam to leave term 5) and match rates.
      Sgu has a lower match rate for residency than their step 1 passing rates. That's why they don't advertise that info on their website. Sketchy AF..
      People I know transfered to Auc and have told me that their curriculum is more fair than sgu. It is hard for me to recommend any other schools since I do not have any contacts.
      These are my recommendations you should ask every school you talk to.

    Is this only a Medical School? And if so do the med school and undergrad share dorms?

    • @BrittneyKilgore
      @BrittneyKilgore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a medical and vet school that are both US schools. They often share dorms. The school of arts and sciences has a traditional undergrad, masters, nursing, and doctorate program. However, it's not affiliated with the US in the sense that you can't get US federal loans, but you can still attend. Often, people will go through SGU's undergrad to go to med/vet school since they have a 1-3 year premed/prevet program

    • @BrittneyKilgore
      @BrittneyKilgore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. When accessing the housing portal you can request a dorm/room that is private with a personal bathroom. Also, to live off campus initially, you need proof of a pet, spouse, child, etc. There is family housing on campus, so sometimes the spouse/child thing won't get you out, but I do know people who lived off campus from day 1 without any of these. I'm just not exactly sure what you say to opt out without talking to housing directly.

      Some private vendors ship here, but not amazon as a whole. You can send packages here via FedEx or the USPS. It can be pretty expensive, and upon recieving the package you have to pay customs. Its best to try to pack everything you'll need each semester or send a barrel with extra things.
