Was there from 71-80 for all the bonfires and been back a few times since. Brilliant fun yet very traditional and special. No bonfire celebrations like it anywhere. The No Popery is completely part of that tradition as is a night where townsfolk feel like the town 's streets are theirs and can behave boisterously, but not dangerously. It's essential to release a bit of pent up energy and discontent - as they say. Young kids parade with big torches and are not hurt. There is a lot of good old common sense out there on Bonfire Night.
I completely fail to see why the slogan "No Popery" should cause offence. People are free to accept OR REJECT a religious system... just like a political system. You are not born with a religion, it is not genetic; It is a CHOICE. We had Catholic emancipation in 1829, so people are free to follow the pope if they want. They now have complete equality in employment and public life. However, this doesn't mean that the Catholic RELIGION, or any other, is beyond criticism. Neither should it claim some sort of special protection from being offended. We don't stop Remembrance Day Services because they might offend the Germans; Neither should we abandon Bonfire Night traditions because they might offend hard line Catholics. If we did we would all become a little less free.
To the priest...If you go talk to imaginary friends, and personally profit by it, why should you not stand up to some degree of public scrutiny yourself? I'm not a hater, (far from it in fact), but do feel I need to pitch the question...get an honest job, pay some honest taxes, then you're entitled to a view...until then, S.O.
Excellent upload!! Long may they continue!

I can't believe how so much has changed yet the essence continues and we still do all these things in a modern WAY.
It was amazing.
