One more tip is that if you aren't clearing jumps, don't just use more speed. Good technique makes up for extra speed when jumping. I took my large 29er dual suspension to a dirt jump park and I was either casing, or accidentally nose-bonking table tops because I was going in with too much speed. I had a hard time figuring out what was wrong, but then I just hit the tables with less speed than I thought I needed and focused on standing up to the jump face and I cleared the whole line with ease!
Yep. My friend was nervous about a jump and just used more speed to be extra sure to clear the gap. Bad choice. Nose dipped in the air and he went OTB. I called the ambulance. Broken wrist, collarbone and dislocated shoulder.

Not sure about the scooping the feet part. Generally if you just lift your legs/ bend the knees the pedals will naturally follow, but as all things go, the only way to do is to do it. You can only learn by doing the thing you wanna learn.
Cheer ms Blake, Next stage of my mtb progression is jumps and the thoughts of what can go wrong can override what can be done but with your usual excellent explanations along with your default enthusiasm, I’m going forward with a plan of those steps to work with 😎
Thank you, for the mistake part, haha I kinda of feel off honestly. So I might try again someday but am not sure but now am going to slow enjoy riding my bike.
Nice, u said something about the pedals, I found that’s the most important part for beginners especially to learn to be with the bike and use the tires as feet! Cheers
Thanks Blake. Another great video! I think there's still debate on the timing and amount of pre-load (and rebound) of the FRONT fork on steep lippy jumps on a full suspension bike. Is there no fork preload? Some? Lots? When? The video on jumping that I would LOVE to see, but no one has ever made would be to suit up in a full face, and a protector with a nice deep foam pit and have y'all demonstrate getting sent over the bars (safely into the foam pit of course). I've been sent over the bars in two main ways (with no foam pit haha), the first is like you said, putting your weight back and getting catapulted, but the second way I get ejected is when I accidentally let my fork slam or soak up a very lippy jump, and then when the front tire comes off the lip, the fork rebound in the air pulls me forward. It's sort of like preloading too late, or letting the fork suck up the face of the jump. Sorry for the long comment! It would be great to see you guys get bucked forward or dead sailor into a foam pit in slow motion!
Oof, that sounds painfully familiar. I reduced the rebound speed on my fork this year and I'm not getting it as bad now. But rock gardens are harder... so there's that. 😂

maybe 1 key parameter not covered here ( and it’s the case in 99% of the Jumpping tuto videos): The speed! You could perfectly know what to do “Compress, stand up, look at landing zone etc” if you don’t have proper speed nothing will happen or you won’t be able to clear the jump properly.
I once overcooked it when over the bars and scraped my face up, since then every like 5/6th jump I land in an accidental manual - I can’t even manual flat. Haven’t fallen off over the back tho - yet - 😂
Very interesting episode on learning to send it. One question - what sort of average speed is recommended along with lessons learned here to clear a jump? Excellent video Blake thanks for sharing 😁🤙
I'm confused - use the bunny hop technique but says later keep your weight central to stop yourself getting bucked. The bunny hop technique involves aggressively moving your weight to the back? It would be great if GMBN could break down how the jumping bunny hop technique is different from the "on the flat" bunny hop technique 🙏
@@clivejcellis on flat ground you shift back to get the bike up, on a jump the ramp does the lifting. But you need to have the same stand up explosive motion and then follow through.
@@Greg-ht2uv thanks. Yeah I just use my legs to jump atm but im trying to dial Blake's boost technique and get my arms involved. I think he uses a technique similar to the bunnyhop. Pushing down on the handlebars to unweight the front wheel at the top of the lip but rather than shifting his hips back, I think he pivots at the hips as his arms extend. His legs then become fully extended as the back wheel reaches the top of the lip. Not entirely sure though but I think that's what's happening. Will give it a go and hope for the best.
i'm not saying i'm good at jumping, but spending a lot of time doing jumps helps the most. the technique is most important, but spending time doing is as important. you lose all technique and confidence if you don't keep practising.
I can think of one or two riders with channels on here, who don’t have great technique (particularly the leg extension part of taking off), but gets lots of kudos. Perhaps, they should be directed to this excellent video?
I'm a newbie to trying to jump, do you use the same technique if you're not clearing a table top i.e landing on the flat on the top? Or keep the bike level for landing and not front wheel first? Thanks!
It sounds backwards but loading the back wheel too much can cause it to buck you. Practice a neutral position on your bike. Everything will come with time and practice! Keep at it 🤘
What about a video focused on DH bike park jumps? Where you're focused more on speed control as much as you are on form? Stay awesome and sendy Blake, love your attitude and charisma!
I have made a lot of progress on my jumping being 2 seasons into mountain biking I jump decently high, I got a decent position and angle of attack and I land leveled, my only problem is on the jumping distance, I don’t jump long enough and I got trouble clearing table tops, any tips on that?
Like most jumping videos on TH-cam, goes too fast through actual jumping footage to learn anything in significance. Might as well be listening to a podcast.
I don’t have any trails with jumps I only have small dirt and sand jumps we made so it’s hard to learn to jump better. Also when I jump my feet always slip off the pedals and I land on my seat with my but and scrape my shins. Is there a way to fix this?
During the part where he says to "curl your feet on the pedals" (~2:45), the video shows his shoes. Is it just me, or are his shoes dead flat (i.e. not showing any visible sign of curling around the pedals)?
Try practicing bunny hops over a tree limb over and over and then over the lip of a table top, the relaxing is the key or being comfortable airborne and you'll love it. Start small and take your time.

@@godspeed821 I have a friend that feels the same way, his confidence is very low, finally he went for it and got hurt, don't do that, your confidence will tell you if you need to keep pursuing or not. This is my problem too. As a very experienced dirt bike rider I felt confident jumping my MTB. When I got airborne my feet went in a different direction from my pedals. I got to take a little nap on the trail and I took a bit of gravel home with me buried in my face. On a motorcycle it's easy: gas it off the lip, grip the tank with your knees and all is good. However, bikes don't have a tank and there's no throttle. How do I keep my feet on the pedals while in the air? How come none of the 'How To Jump' videos ever address this?
