    Love this song.
The song doesn't fit inside a box. The music flows naturally, evolves freely into what it is.
It defies verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus. It's just pure rock n roll, with prog adventure. The use of dynamics is brilliant. The solos are amazing. As for the lyrics, I really love how they are more abstract with the odd lines breaking through "life's a draaag", "life's a bummer", etc.

I’m totally with you on that bridge that never comes back, except that I love it. It’s like… a song with a part a / part b feel, but it transitions like a bridge. I always saw it as, like, a way to fuck with expectation. Which was a lot of Smashing Pumpkins’ thing. They had a lot more pop/ballad in their mix than most of the grunge or grunge-adjacent bands of the time.
Great reaction as always, bruv. Love.

  • @amassaic

Regarding Billy’s vocals, the thing to understand about him is the music provides the melody and his vocals provide accent. That’s what is unique about them. While most bands have basic chord progressions and let the vocals drive the melody, SP do the opposite. It’s why the music itself is so lush and Billy’s vocals are more about attitude and ambiance

Hummer was one of the first songs I learned how to play on the drums.
As a drummer, I really liked this song. Jimmy's signature constant 8ths on the hi hat (he keeps this constant as soon as he switches to his ride and keeps it going even through fills) is great at forcing you to build up your balance (literal sense of balance) using your core muscles. The fills are simple, which makes it even more important to execute smoothly. Jimmy really plays smoothly here.
On the outro, the constant 8ths remain while he plays around the kit in a very jazz-inspired way. This is a very good exercise in dynamics and basic independence. I still love this song for that.

    • @Sapiensiate
      @Sapiensiate 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As a non-drummer this is the only song I can play on the drums! Jimmy's jazz training background really flows through into the psychodelic elements, keeping them dreamy but also energetic. Blissful.

I was recording some song off the radio in 1993 and left it running too long. Hummer was the extra song I recorded. At the end of the song, the DJ said "ah that really clears the head" and I listened to it repeatedly. Then I got a loan of Siamese Dream and became a lifelong fan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

This song is a masterclass in the way they blend shoegaze with heavier rock elements, allowing each section to breathe without dominating each other. Darcy's bass lines bounce perfectly within the middle giving the depth and Jimmy's drumming is tasteful as always. The outro is the nostalgia that ties this whole album together right down to the cover art.

On the subject of re-watching movies or re-listening to songs: It has been theorized that aesthetic beauty lies in the appreciation of the relationship between the parts of a thing and the whole. Experiencing something for the first time is a non-replicable experience, because of the freshness and surprise… you are experiencing the parts and forming your sense of the whole at the same time. On repeat experience, you have some sense of the whole, so you can better appreciate how the parts fit in as you experience them sequentially. Like how in a plot-twisty movie or a mystery, it’s not until the second viewing that you can appreciate all the foreshadowing and red herrings and sneaky tricks. You can see the artistry more, go back and analyze how the artist took you on that ride.
I am a purist about my first-time experiences… I avoid movie spoilers like the plague, and being from the era of albums, I usually prefer to hear the album before the single if at all possible. As a musician/creative-type though, I think that the second viewing/listen is my favorite time through. But also, my inability to re-experience that first listen myself is the main reason I like reaction videos. Because experiencing that fresh take through someone else’s eyes is the closest you can get to hearing a familiar song again for the first time.

@@justaguy1451 Well yeah, sure, but what am I, the reaction authenticity police? I just kinda take it on faith that reactors aren’t frauds, because it costs me nothing if they are.
Anyway, I kinda have two veins of reactions videos I watch. One is, like, a specifically knowledgeable reactor (usually a musician or producer of some sort, or else just someone with an epic knowledge of at least SOME genre of music (i.e. rockers react to hip hop, rappers react to rock, etc)). The other vein is just, like… watching any person’s fresh reaction to a song. In which case I guess I don’t care much if they read Wikipedia first to seem more insightful… because it’s not, like, their analysis of the song that I’m looking for, it’s their own emotional reaction. And I think if they’re pretending it’s their first time hearing the song, I’m still kinda getting SOME version of their reaction, because I figure any individual is the world’s leading expert on their own emotional reaction to stuff.

  • @amassaic

As a gold member, avid follower of the fanbase, pretty much from the beginning (and the one who requested this song), if I’m going to offer constructive criticism, I would love if you focused more on the uniqueness of the guitar overall in all reviews. I know you’re a bassist and you look for that rhythm section but Billy Corgan’s guitar work, style, and tone has been applauded as among the most unique in rock history. I feel like you don’t appreciate good guitar work.
Additionally, I feel like you don’t appreciate the ambiance of a song - it’s all just so technical all the time and for certain songs, it’s slightly obnoxious to see if I’m being real here.
That said, I still love your reactions. But this is where you can improve.
Maybe before you score and figure out the time and all of the mumbo jumbo, you can take a second listen and try to TAKE IN the song as the artist intended. I know you don’t analyze lyrics but I do feel like you should be able to take in the music and ambiance itself and factor it in.

I enjoy your reactions, but you gotta start acknowledging your biases more often. Pop music is a genre. Progressive rock is a genre. Jazz is a genre. This particular song incorporates all of those genres.
“Predictability” is a fundamental element of pop music. Change in key is an element of Prog and jazz. Its neither good nor bad, its just an element of the particular genre.

My favourite version of this is the performance at the end of Oceania live DVD. It's a shame it doesn't seem to be uploaded any more. I own the disc, I just don't really use discs much these days. But they got rid of that beginning noise which I always thought was just annoying, and it's just simply a great performance with lovely dynamic range otherwise. That and the unreleased "Dream Machine" song before it are a go-to one-two punch before going out, if I do manage to find the disc again.

A little more than "Wow man that was amazing." I'd like to make 2 very different requests. Also Dave Heretic you're my favourite reactor by a fair margin and I felt it might interest you to know Australia used to have a pre covid heavy metal/rock/punk rock festival called Soundwave. The last yr they existed went for 2 days. Faith No More was the day 1 festival headliner, Slipknot was day 2. It was the first time I saw Ministry (TONS of kickass Industrial Metal hits, well worth reacting to a few). The "metal stage" headliners on day 2 were Judas Priest \m/ and Smashing Pumpkins simply because Slipknot were bigger than them and they wanted night time for their light show

At their best, Smashing Pumpkins was fascinating. At their worst they could be annoying. This song seems to have enough of a hook to fascinate. Wasn't crazy about the intro, but the changes in at least the feel of the time, and the interesting chord progressions grabbed my attention. That having been said it's nothing special for them. Pretty generous score, great reaction!
