- This is a remaster of the 2581 explosion video I did 2 years ago. I had a couple of my friends help narrate a couple of the sections in this video their channels will be in the description. I would also like to extend my thanks to all of you for getting this channel up to 800 subs! I never thought I would get this far and it couldn't be done without all you guys! All photos and videos belong to their respective owners. The music used also belongs to their respective owners. A couple quick notes in the video is when the crew is mentioned they actually got on when the crew change occurred. It's actually unknown who the previous crew was before the crew change in Grand Forks which is when the three known crew members got on. I also found out later the reason why the engine exploded. After finding out the engine was supposedly checked before the builder run was found incorrect. This is was due to finding water scaling and dirt in the water column pipes. Hope you enjoy it! Don't forget to subscribe, like, and comment!

My great uncle was Ervin Zinter. Thank you for the well researched and produced video. I learned a lot about my family history.
In my completely unbiased opinion this man has the best profile picture of any railroad TH-camr.
"It was cooking from the inside and we came into action it was to late...."
Hey bren for your next engines of the gn can plz do the 2-8-8-0s?
Very impressive short documentary of a horrific accident describing a boiler explosion, at this time diesel engines started demonstrating their capabilities of replacing steam power. GN locomotive 2581 was the first S2 class 4-8-4 engine to be scrapped and all of the S2's were eventually scrapped aside from engine 2584 which still exists today on display in Montana. GN rr locomotive 2584 is the only surviving Great Northern 4-8-4 type locomotive in existence as all the other S2 engines and all the S1 class engines were scrapped at the end of the steam era.
Awesome video bren, and to the others who narrated too!
Thanks!
Eyy! It's Mah Boi, Frank voicing in the video
Yep he is!
I also heard Reversion 2015 by Myuu. You should use Myuu's background music more often
It makes me happy that someone made a video about this boiler explosion as I think it is one of the more overlooked boiler explosion stories. I can't remember where I first read about this disaster whether it was from a newspaper clipping that I have in my miscellaneous railroad archive collection or from a book on the Great Northern Railway. I take it a fellow GNR fan? I noticed the photos you have in your video here that can be found in the books by Charles R. Wood. I own a copy of each of the three you credited in the video.
Yep the GN is my favorite railroad of all time.
Its not steam pressure that makes the pistons move. Its the expansive properties of the heat in the steam that does the work
#2581's crownsheet failed due to low water and the boiler explode into a fireball.
One would think that you would watch the water level religously, the other crew silenceing the alarm, the crew who took over didnt bother to check, where were their heads.
Considering the locomotive was a Great Northern locomotive, and has 25 in its running number, if you rework it a bit by removing one pair of trailing wheels (making it a 4-8-2), adding a different firebox front, painting it black and blue, you get Engine 25 from Hey Arnold.
Still, though, may the crew who died in this disaster rest in peace.
7:07 boiler explosion?
@@shazwanjamaludinaydensufia7610 yes this engine had a boiler explosion
good show
Just gonna be honest! Not meaning this in a negative way, but one way to improve would be to take a little less time on the background info at the start and get to the meat of the video a little quicker! I like your presentation, just took too long to get to the core story
The main course can't be served without the sides, just like any steam locomotive accident, it's always good to know what's going on in the locomotive
Great Heavens.
What is the piano music used near the end of the video?
@@Timerman765 the music used is called Reversion By Myuu.
Are you going to make more videos Brendan?
Yes there is more videos coming i haven’t been as active as i would’ve liked since i was sick a good amount of the time and i’m also doing college as we speak.
