    Great N gauge layout of the Shinkansen trains, 2 regular Shinkansen trains & Doctor Yellow which is Japan’s favorite train. I have an Amtrak Superliner Kato train set that I set up when I decorate my home for the Christmas holiday season and keep it set up till the Sunday night after New Years Day. The video is great also.

    This is awesome! If you have a moment, I wonder what radius your viaduct turns are. I have a nozomi set but the viaduct kit I got has turns that are too tight for it. It's not easy to find out what radius of viaduct you need for various trains. This is inspirational, since I'm coming from just having a couple of starter kits.

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Colin. As they say in our hobby - use the largest radius you can but as much as we like to use 'em, we simply do not have the space. In the video above, I used Kato R414 / 381mm or rather 16-5/15" / 15". I wish I could use larger curves thou.

    Hi Mardon,
    I was wondering if you would consider doing a tutorial video on your custom viaduct station from start to finish. This is an awesome video, thank you for posting it.
    Raven :)

      @67macdon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Raven Shadowz There's really not much to describe it but a simple pvc tube with a plywood level same height as the kato viaduct and cut rectangular windows using a dremel thats a tad shorter than 248mm which is the length of a kato straight track (I used 5x248mm straight kato track inside). What ever space left over at both sides of the plywood was used as a passenger platform.

    great job cool layout
    ...just ordered 3 of V13 KATO TRACK KIT i know these have a wider base curve but on your layout, after The turnout are the curves touching the trains ...the single track viaduct walls iv had a problem with are the tighter curves not being able to use them with my bulletts or my 4884 big boy .... wider viaduct curves... I can't remember the model # that is the minimum curve to use

    could you do a VIDEO on your custom viaduct Station it is brilliant and maybe worth a shout to a company to have them made ..... might put some money in your pocket

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul. There's really not much to it but a $8 - $10 (6" diameter) pvc tube. I placed cardboard on both ends so the pvc tube wont roll, cut rectangles on the pvc using a dremel, added a long thin plywood and hanged it inside that would have the same height as the kato viaduct tracks and lastly added 2 long platforms on both the plywood sides made out of sintra. I wanted to do more like probably add lights, etc. but I really wanted a 4 track station so I had to build a new one.

      +Mardon Callanta Thank you for the swift reply, I will attempt to do the same, but think maybe you should take it to the company to see if they want to design and build it, and place it out in the stores for sale....... obviously giving you a little for the design idea
      happy new year

    the controller..how is it with kato trains? it has two outputs to the outer/inner track I presume.. do you need special wires to fit between controller and kato track? apologies for the questions but trying to find information is a nightmare.. cool circuit.

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The double viaduct tracks does need 2 controllers or a single unit that has 2 outputs and controlled individually. Nothing special needed - either you use a short straight track that has a wire that connects to your controller or a wire that has rail joiners wherein wires are soldered to it - which you can connect to any tracks that join together. Both are cheap and easily available made by Kato.

    • @SBEARD12345
      @SBEARD12345 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mardon Callanta was really wondering about the controller itself is it a double output?? . looks different than the usual kato blue...was going to go for the short track connection.. does worry that you might burn out the motors going that fast with a bullet train.. brilliant video and may nick the idea for the station..apologies 😁

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The controller I use for my shinkansens is a MRC Tech7 double output controller: www.modelrectifier.com/product-p/0001278.htm Im sure there are japanese (Kato, Tomix, etc.) equivalents, but I thought I'd use the MRC instead. Yes, it has 2 outputs and 2 knobs in one unit.........basically like 2 controllers in a single box.

    • @SBEARD12345
      @SBEARD12345 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mardon Callanta ok....is the hook up the same as the kato plugs or do you need an adaptor to plug into the back of the double??

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're using a Kato controller, you use this: www.1999.co.jp/eng/10003112 With my double controller, I use two of these: www.1999.co.jp/eng/10003121 With the kato, it uses a "tamiya" style connector on one end while the MRC uses a much simpler connection of loosing 2 screws, insert the wire and re-tightening it. Basically, the MRC double controller does not use a proprietary plug unlike the kato "tamiya" style connector......however, kato itself sells a power wire for non-kato controllers.

    Nice layout ....wandering if kato made a turnout viaduct... if not what did you do to make? I am making a city layout and this is kind of the idea I was thinking of.

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they did, but somehow abandoned the idea. In the video above, I just modified a stock double track straight by replacing a kato #6 turnout.

      Thank you for mentioning this and doing it. I have a perfect (for me anyways) viaduct oval and wanted to add a turnout and no such thing exists.

    • @renatopallassini
      @renatopallassini ปีที่แล้ว

      @@67macdon If you don't mind me asking how did you deal with the side barriers at the turnout? Thanks

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The turnout was basically made out of sintra thats easy to cut. It uses 1 straight track & 1 turnout.
      The sides are also made out of sintra & you could spray paint them in order to match the kato viaduct. I cant rememer if I even used stands for it or just the track connections were enough to hold it up. The single elevated viaduct is naturally a sold product by Kato.
      The double track with turnout can be easily built using various materials like plywood, sintra, cardboard, etc. Just measure & cut the floor. The sides are just the same & glued to the floor. Once you’re satisfied with the fit, you can just spray paint to match the rest of the viaduct.
      The same concept could be used for the outer track so you could change the outside track trains or integrate a kato double crossover. However, the inner track train would need to stop in the station while the outer track train could move in the inner track & down the turnout to park.
      Also, making a turnout for the outside track would make the layout bigger. My concept here was just to play within the confines of the oval track ……. besides, there’s nothing there but open space! Lol!
      Have fun in building & designing your layout. If Kato didnt make it, look at various ways to make it.

      @renatopallassini ปีที่แล้ว

      @@67macdon wow… thank you for the detailed reply. Just got into railway modelling and have bought quite a few of the Kato track sets and my v13 is on the way. Yes, was thinking of a double crossover too at some point to allow the outside train to descend. I’ve bought two single viaduct straight tracks (186+62 mm) as well the left point because for the opposite side I’ve bought a double track truss bridge which is 248mm. But yes I’m a first time modeller and need to look into this sintra stuff and matching spray paints. Thank you :)

      Hi,
      That is just a 6" PVC plastic tube which you could probably get for less than $10 in your neighborhood hardware store. I just cut out rectangular windows so I could see the trains and platforms.

      Mardon Callanta Very Cool. Just Subscribed !
      I have 3 layouts going at once I have to finish. 3 kids, I takes a week to get a tree done with them jumping on my Back. XMAS G scale is up and running now. Happy holidays !!
      Oh, Also, Did you use a jig saw to cut the PVC? Thick for an Exacto I would think.

    • @67macdon
      @67macdon  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silk Boxing The hardware pvc tube is about 3mm thick so yes its too thick to be cut by an x-acto knife. What I did was lay the tube on a flat table and with a ruler drew the horizontal lines for the window openings. I used a dremel with a fiberglass cutting wheel to cut just barely inside the line. After cutting either use a file or sandpaper to straighten the openings.
