U.S. Conversion: I-1/4 cup Quick Cooking Oats 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar 1 stick + 2 Tbl. cut-up butter 2 Tbl. light corn syrup It looks like he uses a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. I made these and added flax, chia & pumpkin seeds plus added a teaspoon more of the butter and syrup to offset. They turned out awesome! Thanks for the recipe, Richard.
I dont understand why there are so many thumbs down on this... no fancy editing (not needed), its straight forward and simple. exactly what I needed, thanks for this buddy!! trying it today (but making homemade syrup beforehand ✌ good video!
Who says they are because of how the video was made? Perhaps they don't like what the video is about. If someone made a video about fried liver, it would certainly get a thumbs down from me, no matter how lovely the editing is.
Hye Richard, Finally someone who knows how to make a traditional flapjack, It took me back to the first thing I cooked in Home Economics at school. Thank you, Ive been looking for the proper recipe for these for a fair while now, now I have it I shall be a happy cook over the weekend.
When using golden syrup let your spoon stand in a cup of boiling water before to pop it in the tin and use a round ended knife to scrape it off. You will find it easier and more accurate measure it our
hi thank you for this video its really good and straight forward just something that might help you with the golden syrup if you run your spoon under some water before you take a spoon of syrup it will prevent it from sticking to the spoon so much thanks for the recipe :)
I remember the first time I had my first British flapjacks(as an American) I devoured an entire container. I couldn’t look at another flapjack until a year later when I came back to England. I brought home a box and now my whole family is addicted
To "Quit Hiz": I think your Google Plus setting are stopping me from being able to reply directly to your comments: #1 about the sugar: golden syrup or honey will give it quite a lot of sweetness already, so you probably could leave out additional sugar. #2 In the UK there's no special time that flapjacks are eaten. They're a popular snack to have after a meal or between meals at any time of year. Some people also have a variation of a flapjack (a cereal bar) for breakfast too. So for instance, British people wouldn't normally have flapjacks served for Christmas Day dinner, as I think they would be considered too "everyday".
Cooking is experimenting. Don't ask wether it is good to use honey instead of Golden Syrup. Instead, try it for yourself, maybe you prefer it with honey because it gives it a different texture or whatever. Don't be afraid to add other products as well, it won't blow up in your face! (except when you try to cook napalm)
A good tip for getting the golden syrup out, leave your spoon in a cup of boiling water for a minute, the treacle will slide straight off, then dunk the spoon back in the cup after every use
Just a little advice for those who don't have extreme sweet tooths - like myself - leave out the sugar and just add the syrup and some raisins for added natural sweetness.
Thank you for showcasing this recipe. I've been willing to bake flapjacks. I live in Spain and we don't have golden syrup here. I was thinking I could use plain chocolate syrup. Will it do?
They're cheap to make! Just butter, syrup, oats and sugar. I reckon the whole tray probably cost only about the same price to make as a single flapjack costs from my local garage!
Are they soft flapjacks to eat or hard and crunchy? Normally mine are soft but the last recipe I followed they came out hard and crunchy and I didn't like them very much
Chloe Ley The usual reckoning is that the longer you bake, the harder they will be. It's down to personal preference. If you want them soft and gooey, then bake for a shorter time.
Chloe Ley ιφ you put a lot of sirup they will be soft...more sugar more crunchy...but indeed the time you will bake them define if they will be soft or crunchy.
Hi dude. Really appreciate your help on this. Been a very long time since I made flapjacks. :D They're in the oven right now and looking good. Few differences though... I used less butter (I think) and definitely less sugar (hardly any, and standard granulated stuff) and less syrup, except I used honey instead of syrup... is that okay? Hopefully it'll taste okay. I don't have the sweetest tooth and am quite health conscious. By the way, is there an alternative to butter, or rather, the "Flora Original" I used? Just... fatty stuff.
Jan from USA - No corn syrup and golden syrup are different. Corn syrup is from corn. Golden syrup is a bi- product of refining sugar cane. Way different taste.
I also have another question! I was wondering, is there a special time in the year that people eat flapjacks in GB? As if it was like a winter thing or something like that?(hope I'm clear..)
I've definitely seen recipes saying you can use a microwave - obviously it goes in there for much less time than in the oven - perhaps google a microwave flapjack recipe for exact timings. You don't need to use golden syrup - honey is a very common alternative.
Just what I was going to ask! Thanks! I'm not going to put butter or sugar in it though I'm kinda eat to much and in which case would consume the lot, I do train and a bit of a fitness fanatic but still can't control myself lol. Gonna throw some raisins into it too, YUMMY!
Great easy and simple recipe to follow. Shame about the lack lustre commentary. :-( Great variations to be had by adding cranberries, Raisins or dipping one end with chocolate for a touch of luxury. My kids really enjoyed these.
Just to let people know, using brown or raw sugar instead of white sugar makes them even nicer and make them thick about 2 or 3 cm thick not thin as they will be fairly soft and chewy as they are meant to be not thin and hard.
I was just about to ask this. Honey is better for you and nicer than golden syrup. I have honey, but no golden syrup so I'll be trying it this way and imagining my ones will be better than these.

Krillex exactly I think people dislike videos just because they have nothing else to do
My sentiments exactly. Well done, clean and staight forward.
The spoon wasnt a table spoon but a dessert spoon
Who says they are because of how the video was made? Perhaps they don't like what the video is about. If someone made a video about fried liver, it would certainly get a thumbs down from me, no matter how lovely the editing is.
250 grams of rolled oats
75 grams of sugar
150 grams of butter
3 tbs of golden syrup
Thank you Miss Nara. xxx
Thank you , really helped im baking them right now!!!!!!😁😊
Muhammad Zubair lol
Thanks no point in watching the vid now
small tip if you don't want syrup to stick to spoon then dip spoon in hot water before putting it into syrup
Or olive oil
+Spaghetticat does it work with olive oil? because its too much butter... in flapjack. have you tried? does it smell ?
+zadran zadrani I mean dip the spoon in olive oil before scooping the golden syrup. It stops it sticking to the spoon
That's genius. I'll remember that, thanks Paulina.
or buy a squeeze bottle of it lol
It's amazing how many words mean something different in the USA and the UK. Two nations divided by a common language!
Thank you, best demonstration of a Flapjack yet. Granny from the USA 🌹❤️
Wow, its actually quite simple to make! Thank you so much, will definitely try this weekend!
This was the video that helped me make flapjacks as a kid
Thanks for this, I'm gonna make some this weekend!
Hye Richard, Finally someone who knows how to make a traditional flapjack, It took me back to the first thing I cooked in Home Economics at school. Thank you, Ive been looking for the proper recipe for these for a fair while now, now I have it I shall be a happy cook over the weekend.
Thin layer of chocolate on the top would be very nice addition to the flapjacks. Cool vid.
When using golden syrup let your spoon stand in a cup of boiling water before to pop it in the tin and use a round ended knife to scrape it off. You will find it easier and more accurate measure it our
They look gorgeous - thank you...i can't wait to hit the kitchen and make some...tomorrow hopefully!
So simple to make! Yummy! Thanks for sharing :)
If I'd have had some time, I'd have made a batch and brought them along to Denbigh for the meetup. Oh well, next time!
Very easy recipe, easy to follow video. Thank you 👍
hi thank you for this video its really good and straight forward just something that might help you with the golden syrup if you run your spoon under some water before you take a spoon of syrup it will prevent it from sticking to the spoon so much thanks for the recipe :)
I'm making them now and I'm using your way as they looked really nice x
I remember the first time I had my first British flapjacks(as an American) I devoured an entire container. I couldn’t look at another flapjack until a year later when I came back to England. I brought home a box and now my whole family is addicted

Sm4o a pancake exploded on my hand before... I think it had too much oil
A good tip for getting the golden syrup out, leave your spoon in a cup of boiling water for a minute, the treacle will slide straight off, then dunk the spoon back in the cup after every use
Love the recipe! ❤
thank you for your recipe and sharing it. The flapjacks were delicious
Looked very nice indeed Richard, thanks for the recipe and video.
Looked very tasty I remember having these in School! :o)
Just a little advice for those who don't have extreme sweet tooths - like myself - leave out the sugar and just add the syrup and some raisins for added natural sweetness.
Looks delicious!
could I use honey instead of golden syrop ?
YOU'RE SUCH a nice guy :D
My go to recipe
Thank you for showcasing this recipe. I've been willing to bake flapjacks. I live in Spain and we don't have golden syrup here. I was thinking I could use plain chocolate syrup. Will it do?
+Jorge Bermudez You can use honey as a substitute.
RichardB1983 ahhh, thanks. I'll use honey instead then.
Suggestion! I know this may seem lazy but maybe put recipe you use in description below?
Why do he thinks he a chef lol
They're cheap to make! Just butter, syrup, oats and sugar. I reckon the whole tray probably cost only about the same price to make as a single flapjack costs from my local garage!

You can also add black treacle to make them extra soft and gooey
Chloe Ley ιφ you put a lot of sirup they will be soft...more sugar more crunchy...but indeed the time you will bake them define if they will be soft or crunchy.
Richard I need flapjacks in my life !! Lol
Hi dude. Really appreciate your help on this. Been a very long time since I made flapjacks. :D They're in the oven right now and looking good. Few differences though... live a little
Fitsa Dee
Did they turn out OK?
So, you followed a completely different recipe!. I need to use less sugar.
Thx Paulina and thx for the great help I wanted to make flapjacks
can you replace the butter with any other ingredient? Thanks
I've put dried apricots in mine is that ok? because I heard you can do that to add more flavor
Yes. Any dried fruits or nuts etc. can be added. Just add them to the mixture before you put it in the baking tray.
Jan from USA - No corn syrup and golden syrup are different. Corn syrup is from corn. Golden syrup is a bi- product of refining sugar cane. Way different taste.
Very good I made it fot my children thay loved it thanks
Is it fine if we do not put sugar in it? I found another recipe, with the exact same ingredients and everything but they didn't mention adding sugar.
I also have another question! I was wondering, is there a special time in the year that people eat flapjacks in GB? As if it was like a winter thing or something like that?(hope I'm clear..)
Quit Hiz yes we eat a ton of flapjacks every single day in winter
Quit Hiz it’s a tradition everyone eats at like 10
Just made these hoping they taste nice when they come out of he oven in 20mins :D
Looks good!
Can you use brown sugar instead in this recipe
i'm making them today by myself every time i cook something even simple things i mess it up but this looks super easy so hopefully it will work out :)
Do we need golden syrup if not can we take it out completely and instead of putting it in the oven can we put it in the microwave
I've definitely seen recipes saying you can use a microwave - obviously it goes in there for much less time than in the oven - perhaps google a microwave flapjack recipe for exact timings. You don't need to use golden syrup - honey is a very common alternative.
Thx
Very nice flap jack
making them now. flapjacks are my life soooo soooo yuuuuummy
Anu you are so kidding me!!
Don't forget to add salt to your mixture for better taste
I can use honey or only gold syrup?
Thanks for the video, I really love it.
Frida Hitachiin Yes. Honey is a common alternative to use.
RichardB1983 Thank you :)
It will give a very different flavour though.
Great video it really helped!
I can't believe how much I pay for one of them at the local garage .... :o))
do u eat these flapjacks
Yes you deffo need to do this :-) ...
I love eating but I fail at cooking :-(
can I use honey accept golden syrup?
Yes. Honey is a very common alternative to golden syrup
+RichardB1983 thanks
Just what I was going to ask! Thanks! I'm not going to put butter or sugar in it though I'm kinda eat to much and in which case would consume the lot, I do train and a bit of a fitness fanatic but still can't control myself lol. Gonna throw some raisins into it too, YUMMY!
Yes you can , but it won't taste as nice as the golden syrup
If you can't get golden syrup, honey or even molasses would be far better than corn syrup.
Awesome! Thank you! :)
Can i use brown sugar instead of normal white sugar
+Brandon King Yes, of course.
Ooh they are nice
The only person who knows about cooking. Because he said what others did not. Gas Mark 4. You are the only intelligent person. Thank you.
are these quick cooking oats or slow?
nikos t I just bought a big bag of fairly cheap porridge oats, which are rolled oats, so I guess they are probably just the regular oats.
so it's old fashioned i guess...
not the instant or quick oats.
The quick cook oats don't work for this as they break down to quickly. Use rolled porridge oats 😊
Great easy and simple recipe to follow. Shame about the lack lustre commentary. :-(
Great variations to be had by adding cranberries, Raisins or dipping one end with chocolate for a touch of luxury. My kids really enjoyed these.
Ticking clock? Nice recipe.
Can I freeze this?
You should do ASMR. You have a very soft voice and speak calmly. You just need a nice mic to get high quality audio of the cooking.
Brilliant good bloke uses ozs yayyyy👍👍👍👍👍
can you use stork margarine to make flapjacks
+sarah osmari You could try it! I've certainly heard of people using it as a substitute for butter in cakes and suchlike.
Tip. When doing the syrup bit heat your spoon and it ill drop off easily and you could use a round ended knife to scrape it off the spoon.
Are these eaten as a snack, dessert, or breakfast? thanks.
+ruby slippers As a snack most commonly, but as a breakfast bar is possible, and some will have it as something to eat after lunch
:) xx thanks
ruby slippers eat them anytime of the day
Yes.
you eat it warm with custard as a desert cold as a breakfast snack or just a snack :)
They are nice if you add some coconut. YUMMY.
Me: what did it taste like
Him: mm

MaZEEZaM why are you a cow
MaZEEZaM and thx for the info
Yes I realised from watching ... which is why I whinged about "garage" prices :o)
you like a young version of my ict teacher
Hi 😊
warm your spoon on the gas before spooning your golden syrup.
i like crispy flapjacks, more syrup and cook longer.
I’m gonna make mine a bit thicker by putting a bit more
I recommend melting cadburys popping candy chocolate on top of the flapjacks
Can I use honey?
+Kasongo mutombokadi Yes. Honey is a very common alternative, but will give a slightly different taste.
thnx
There so nice :)
can you use honey
I was just about to ask this. Honey is better for you and nicer than golden syrup. I have honey, but no golden syrup so I'll be trying it this way and imagining my ones will be better than these.
I've just made them. They were dry and too crumbly
add cheese to make it more insanely delicious
can I use honey instead of golden syrup?☺
+Muscaan Basra Honey is a very common alternative to golden syrup, yes. It will give a slightly different taste.
Trying now but with honey so fingers crossed 🤞 😂
I want your kitchen
Time for the taste test - just doesn’t tell us how it tastes
