Nice to watch a video of Wheeling from somebody who lived there. The place is looking pretty good with lots of work going on. Too many towns today becoming ghost towns. Hope it continues to get revamped and progressing. I lived there on the island until five years old and then moved to Martins Ferry. Left there in 1963 for a Air Force career and we settled here in Texas after that. Great vids. Continue the good work. My wife, also from MFO, loves to see the places where she used to shop. Thanks Ryan. FYI, I claim Wheeling as my home town...not MFO. Ha
Thanks for the journey through Wheeling, W. Va. I think Wheeling is a great city that's very underrated that's full of architectural gems. I just love old industrial city's that have bones and a great history. This city has a lot of potential to make a comeback! From the City of Brotherly L❤ve.Great vid!👍
I was working there a few years ago, at the furniture store. I loved the buildings and the people. Was there for 4th of July. You had a wonderful orchestra. Beautiful waterfront.I
Thanks for the tour around Wheeling. I’ve been curious about it for a while. Great architecture, picturesque river views, hopefully all the old buildings don’t get torn down. The center market looks really unique. These types of videos make me really sad. What was obviously once a bustling city with a great economy and people working with good jobs has become pretty much a ghost town, because all the industry left and went overseas. It reminds me of places like Butte, Montana and parts of Illinois that are slowly dying. We’ve got to revitalize this great country we live in and start bringing jobs back here. Thanks again for the video!
Loved the tour, I’m from Wheeling but living in Tampa, job transfer. I use to work at the Ohio Valley Medical Center as a Respiratory Therapist, and Coleman’s fish market I have to eat at every year I come home for family visits, they get their fish from Canada, fresh water Canadian White as it’s called, before moving I lived in South Wheeling, before that Elm Grove, Wheeling and West Virginia are great, I miss it at times but visit every year
Wheeling has a lot of history I’m from wheeling we have a lot of events that come here to the city we got zoo and lots of beautiful parks and a resort and nice public pools and Casino we are first state capital before Charleston became the capital we got good schools and private school ice skating and other things to check out come visit wheeling to see for your self how it really is
When I was young the city streets were as busy as New York City. Steubenville Mall was built, and the city started to lose many businesses. I worked at Wheeling Pittsburg Steel in Beech Bottom after getting of the service. We went on strike for a year, it sucked I was young with a young family. My wife said it was the worst years ever in our lives. Moved to California for 15 years and then Montana for 15 years and now in Oregon and just retired and the wife and I just this month hit 48 years of marriage, thanks for memory lane.
I was raised in wheeling left over 40 years ago for charleston wv.its great that they are trying to revitalize the city.but where are the people.charleston a few years behind but declining also.
Spent a lot of time in Wheeling in the early 70's. Quite a bustling town back then. Steel money, old money, snotty rich people. Went back there just a few years ago and saw it had turned into a run-down White ghetto, filled with empty store fronts and tattoo parlors. What a dump. And no Elby's to be found anywhere. Thanks for posting this video.
The city is going through a massive renovation for sure. A couple more years and it will be done. Crazy for the last 10 years. I believe the indoor football league is coming back this next season. Covid pretty much stopped that from happening the last few years. Covid devastasted the live entertainment and indoor sports activity for some time.
@@bluerfoot From an observation point of view a lot of new business is coming into Wheeling. The city has it's own land bank so to speak from commercial properties in town that shut decades ago and let the property go into dis repair. The city will damn near pay you to take one of these buildings and or lots to place your business there if you can show your plans in advance and it looks good. They are creating inner city housing in some of these buildings. There are free events as the waterfront all summer. You can have blast downtown and never drive anywhere if you live in one of these buildings. It's all there within walking distance including jobs,.
@@butchstaz5109 Oh no, the entire downtown is currently being redone. There was big new hotel built coming into Wheeling. A huge new club called Waterfront Hall that is bringing in real entertainment. Not that locals are not real but locals want to see different things now and then. I could list new business for at least an hr. It's turning into a live downtown city. Loft apartments and many of the business's rent apartments out on top. Most of downtown is pretty much completely remodeled. Still under construction and real pain to get around and has been for 5 years but nobody is leaving. they keep coming. I do not live in wheeling. I'm very connected with many people who work for the city because I have worked in the Capitol Theatre since 1976 as a theatre technician. Of course I wasn't a tech in 76. I was a kid learning to be a tech. They are now planting in the new planters they built thru the entire business district. Finishing new sewer lines, water lines, gas, underground electric is all done. the bridges are completely redone. Next phase is paving and then it's close to over. Wheeling is doing very well. Far from a lost city. It was for about 10 or 15 years but it's coming back and strong. A lot of jobs are in this area right now. Heavily fracked and coal mines are still working. We had a tin mill close not far up the river from Wheeling and a new manufacturer has already taken that building. I hated that city most of my life but they are finally fixing it.
Are you driving on a day that shops are closed or are there a lot of abandoned buildings down town wheeling? It looks like a ghost town. Any information you can share is appreciated. Is wheeling a nice town for all ages as far as convenience, medical fun ect?
Retail is long gone from wheeling. They have the river but have not attempted to develop it. They build 31m dollar parking garages and spend money on useless buildings Not to be negative but this administration has no business or management background and it shows
This administration has lost far more businesses then they have gained although they try to tell you different. It’s a bunch of non business non real estate people in office they have ruined what was left of wheeling
Well, it's not really in the south. Wheeling is above the Mason-Dixon line and during the civil war, seceeded (?) from Virginia and became West (by God) Virginia. In fact, the pan-handle area tried to become part of Ohio...but that wasn't happenin'.
West Virginia isn’t the south …you’ve got access to the worlds information in the palm of your hands . Ignorance is a choice . You could’ve easily Googled the information.
How come there is no public transportation? It's such a shame since it has a potential as a charming European small city vibes. Especially if it's snowing heavily there
Definitely great insight I'm moving to wheeling next summer can't wait

Thanks for sharing the video, I am looking at moving to there.
The wheeling Inn needed to be torn down, attracted a lot of shady people. I'm happy they are revitalizing it, can't wait to see the outcome!
Yeah too bad the bozo mayor gave his friend 1.7 million for it

I grew up in Wheeling- it is so sad how run down the city has become. When I was a kid in the 70-80's it was much more booming!
yes it was booming back them.
I want to try Coleman's fish for sure 😁🙌

Here in Texas, we all love our Nailers! Pound ‘em!
Not well known, but the Wheeling Tunnel goes through old works in the Pittsburgh Coal.
one places we are considering purchase a home w/ in nxt year
Visited in the summer of 2020 when there were no people out and about. Judging from this that is the normal state of the city.
You are correct

Is that a Sunday or is the city abandoned? Oh it's early morning on a holiday.

This was on a Sunday so there wasn’t much going on. Unfortunately a lot of businesses have closed or moved out of the downtown over the last 20 years

Ghost town 😮
Interesting that this city is considered in the "south" probably very cold a considerable part of the year.

Along with the sidewalks, they are doing construction on the dilapidated downtown streets too aren’t they?
It’s a joke looks as worse as any area in the country construction crews just leaving garbage and junk everywhere a complete waste of money.
i dont see much if any gas station s
Doesn’t seem to be much traffic
They’ve run all the traffic out of downtown can’t wait until new council and mayor get in they have lost many retailers who tried to make a go of it

Yuuk, Colmans fish.
I've heard for years how good it's supposed to be but I've tried it twice and its greasy and flavorless .
Diss anything but Coleman’s maybe Covid destroyed her tastebuds. They will make it other than deep fried you know

I think most Wheeling residents don't go to Downtown anymore, and instead walk in the Woodsdale/Edgewood area
Downtown is full of homeless criminals on drugs current administration has no clue on what they are doing except wasting money
Downtown is unsafe thanks to the administration in office. Luckily the mayor is out July 1.
