    Thanks foe this. I have actually used this method. I never understand why other guides have you running a bunch of terminal commands just to install Balena Etcher when KDE drive manager, or really any image utility like eufu, will work. Some seem to think Ether is a requirement. Its just a disk imaging utility.

    Thank you! Currently flashing Ubuntu to the correct flash drive. Will be booting onto a 2012 Mac Mini in a couple days when it arrives. This was extremely helpful!

      It’ll be slightly different with a Mac in the bios and boot options but the gist is the same!

    For any of those who are as ignorant as I am when I thought by using a Thin client loading HA on it.. which only becomes a server. You can not have HA interface webpage on it. You will access HA via a web browser on some other type device.. Just so you understand, I did not. My lack of understanding. Chuck did a good job with the video Methods on how to install HA.. I had it done in less than 30 minutes, but spend 12 hours trying to figure out how to log in and find the HA interface to configure and setup my electrical and solar equipment.. Wow, talk about dumb and dumber.. on my part. Humbling experience to say the least..

      I responded on your other comment that you can do this with docker!

      @@ChuckBuilds I sent a request to have dialog via Discord and never received a reply, in fact Discord replied saying that there is no connection between ChuckBuilds and Discord.. Yet you mention to reach out to on Discord.. Now your telling me about Docker. I have watched all your videos on Method One and I never heard any mention of how you can have the HA io on a Thin Client, like the Dell OptiPlex which I purchased on your recommendation, only to find out by your own statement. That I would not be able to use the HA interface on the Thin Client.. Now your coming tell me something about Docker... that this can be done.. I have no idea what Docker is and you made no mention of this in your Method One install of HA on the recommended Dell Thin Client.. Maybe it would be good to make a few things a bit more clearer for those like myself that are limited in the understanding how to have HA on the same client, or using what your saying can be done via Docker. In your three or four videos I have watched particularly the one from a year ago and two from 7 months ago. You show Method One, at the point where your video shows HA install loading, you comment about typing in the ip4 address in the ADDRESS Bar barely seen in the Dark background of a Browser.. So I ask, how are you loading the HA onto the client, and in the video you then show Typing in the 192.168.86.XX.:xxxx ... ip4 local address as it appears on the same screen as the HA client your showing have installed.
      To your benefit, I choose your directions as I believed and found to be one of the best guides in getting the HA onto the Thin Client.. and is a good recommendation.. I have not blamed you for my ignorance at any time. But I have made it clear for others like myself that are not computer language savey programmers, or script writers and have limited understanding. That by watching your videos on Method One, as you your self Later informed me. I would not be able to have HA interface to configure and setup my electronics. That I would need to access by someother means, an app on cell, tablet, desktop or laptop via a Browser. If I was aware of this fact to start with. I would not have spent 12 hours searching and figuring out how or a way and watched your vidoes several times on Method One trying to Find the Address Bar you show typing in to Access HA.. Because I never had a address bar to do so after the Install on the Thin Client.. Because as you explained, that can't be done, as there is no address bar..

      Hey there, I can tell you are frustrated. The link to my discord channel is in the links section on my youtube channel and here: discord.com/invite/uW36dVAtcT . My Video where I talk about Docker as an installation option is available here: th-cam.com/video/UK2D073B5lA/w-d-xo.html . I'll try to help as best I can but I can't fix things on HomeAssistant Operating System that are working as the developer intended. I can try to offer you a workaround but it isn't recommended by Home Assistant and will be a bit more involved than the videos you've watched: www.home-assistant.io/installation/linux

    Great video. Thank you. I already have HA running as a VM in VirtualBox on a Windows 10 PC. After completing the steps in your video, how do I get my existing HA onto the new machine? Is it just a simple matter of moving it by restoring a backup?

      Yep! Just restore a backup! That's the beauty of running HomeAssistant as an OS, it has everything in one spot! I've got a video about scheduling backups and I do a restore in that video: th-cam.com/video/At5LaQtbuFM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d4ki46Bsc3U8yqJ3

I did not realize this was only going to act as a Server for HA.. with no means to display.. I am so lost and disappointed in the means of using HA,, So your telling me,, I have to use a second computer and display to see an Interface of my Solar and electrical appliances. and the Dell Optriplex is a dumb waiter.. Any means or a way to let this work as both, would I need to partition the hard drive.. @@captricflyer3116 Hey, you have a few options. The way that you want to use it is a little different than the planned use but I think you can get that functionality with running HomeAssistant as a docker container on something like Ubuntu. An alternative would be using something like installing proxmox then hosting HAOS as a Virtual Machine, and hosting a second Virtual Machine for Ubuntu or Windows, that you pass through the monitor to. Generally, it's easier and more power efficient to run HA on a small, power efficient device then access it when you need it from another device - such as your phone. I can try to help on discord if you need it

    My current setup is running inside a proxmox vm, is there a benefit to one method over another?

    • @ChuckBuilds
      @ChuckBuilds  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think the OS on a dedicated device is easy to manage and can be left alone to run 24/7 but you “waste” resources by only running HA, which is low impact. If your proxmox is working fine it’s a great way to use the rest of the cpu power to run other things. It’s a little more complicated but not really. Not a huge difference either way, whatever works for you !

    Hey Chuck, great video. After investing 1x hours in other vids telling me to flash HA via balenaetcher with no succes, I finally found your video. So I directly flashed HAOS to the SDD. Unfortunately just before the HAOS home screen, it keeps spamming thousands of lines (to fast to read). When I unplug and reboot the system it tells me that it started in rescue mode.
    Any ideas what I could do. (Tried to flash the SSD already twice).

    Seriously thinking about this install. Currently running on a Lenovo ThinkCentre i5 Windows 10 VirtualBox VM. I want to get away from Windows 10 for obvious reasons. My question; I would like to install a larger SSD with no operating system, will your method work under this scenario installing Linux in the process or do i just install Linux to start.

      You could totally upgrade your SSD at the same time. You could install the blank SSD and follow this video exactly, OR you could follow the instructions in my "Method 2" video where you can install it straight to the SSD before installing it to the machine. I'm here if you need help!

      @@drumslapper That sounds like a good opportunity to try a High Availability Proxmox Cluster! You can run the HAOS as a VM (way better than virtual box) and ensure your home assistant doesn't go down as long as one of the two clusters is online. Might give you some more flexibility with docker containers and functions than dedicating two whole machines to just Home Assistant.
