FIXED Issue when installing Balena Etcher in Ubuntu. (didn't work in the last few days) Updated the command in the blog post: www.simplysmart.house/blog/how-to-install-home-assistant-on-x86-pc#install-balena-etcher-in-ubuntu
@@reshape9190 Just to confirm, I just now successfully installed it on Ubuntu 22.04.02 and flashed the image, So try to give me some more details and I will do my best to assist.
I was having trouble with installing Balena Etcher using this guide and the current version of Ubuntu (24 as of writing). Switching to version 22 of Ubuntu solved my issue.
THANK YOU! This was so simple the way you explained and edited things to make it easy. I've never done this sort of thing, and got Ubuntu running then HAOS running faster than i have ever gotten Windows installed and setup which i've been using for 30 years. Brilliant!
I really appreciate the help. I tried several times to get this to work using other peoples videos, and yours was the only one that worked. Before this I have been using a pi with a SD card, and then I moved up to a solid state drive, but my system was getting very big and that started to have problems, So I decided to get a Dell Optiplex 3050 and I spent 2 days trying to get this to work, and nothing was working until I made it here. So now I'm just trying to work out some small issues. I guess the only weird thing about this new set up is that there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the computer other than long pressing the physical button on the computer, or I guess pulling out the power cord, but hopefully I won't need to turn it off. Thanks for the detailed help.
Glad it worked for you Ron! I know this type of video's can become stale pretty quickly, so I check every few days to ensure that everything is working as it should. As for shutting down your computer, you can use SSH with the following command: "ha host shutdown" You can watch this video where I demonstrate how to install an SSH client, starting at 0:45: th-cam.com/video/dlxRniznsUk/w-d-xo.html
I also have a NUC but I hate that thing only having USB 3.0 ports which causing issue with my USB Zigbee coordinator, even with all those USB 2.0 extensions or USB 2.0 Hub with external power. I bought off a used 7th gen Dell 3050 micro which had 2 ports of USB 2.0 goodness, plug th Zigbee coordinator there without any extension whatsoever and it worked immediately. I think even the Dell 3070 Micro still also have that USB 2.0 ports
HI great video thanks. the flash to the diskonkey is taking hours ? How can i debug to figure out the issue? I tried with a 2tb disk it gave a warning that the dik is very large.. i allowed it.. but after 2 hrs i crashed the balenaetcher ..then a 16GB also same issue.. Another question Must i flash the usb only on the target computer? Regards
Thank you for your feedback! The Ubuntu OS should be flashed onto the disk on key. It usually takes just a few minutes. You can flash the USB on any machine you prefer. Let me know if that helps!
Thanks for a great video, I have installed the software on my HP laptop, but I had to use a browser from another device to access it. My question is : how could I use the same laptop to access the Home Assistant if I am able to install a browser ?
Glad you found it helpful! Regarding your question, not by using this method, But you can achieve that by installing Home Assistant on a Windows machine for example, You can check my video about that: th-cam.com/video/jcxH9KwCRQE/w-d-xo.html

I tried installing it on a ThinClient but I keep getting the problem that it won't flash to the SSD in the system. I think I have everything correct in the boot menu. Maybe you have another tip?
The problem was in the operating system. the ThinClient was provisioned with Debian 12. I installed a new image and followed your tutorial. Now it works great.
You might need to add a Bluetooth proxy to the setup, but yes Home Assistant has a great Bluetooth support, regarding Tuya support you should check this out: github.com/PlusPlus-ua/ha_tuya_ble

Yes it's possible, you can get more details in the HA forum.

Couldnt you just flash HA to a usb from main pc, and install via bios by choosing boot option? Seems much more simple. Either way, good video!
I wish it was possible :)
Glad you found it helpful!
It is not possible to install haos directly from USB, it stays forever at swap haos.

Is there a way to migrate an existing HA from a Rasberry Pi to an intel based pc?
Many thanks
Thanks, I’m glad you found it helpful!
Yes, it should be fairly simple to create a backup from your pi and load it on your Intel PC,
Go to settings->system->backups->create full backup
Then you can use that file at the onboarding stage of your Intel.
@@SimplySmartHouse great, many thanks
The issue in all installation types is that you cannot make any change to "/" or "/etc". so your HA is running on a 100% fixed OS.
There are other installation types that offer that flexibility, Docker for example.
After set up all the configurations and installthe add-ons, Is there any way to cupy HA file from the pc to save it in a safe place as a ready image ?
Not a ready image, but you can use backups: Settings > System > Backups
There you can backup anything important
Is it possible to install a copy of my current HA to the SSD?
It's possible to backup your HA data, and then restore it in your new setup, that's the more common approach anyway.
