I love all your shawls. I have the boneyard pattern but I have not knitted yet. You gave me confidence to cast it on. I’m excited now to start it. I would love to see you design more patterns. You are so talented. Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing knitting with us!
Stephen West designed Boneyard Shawl while hanging at Klose Knit LYS in Urbana, IL. Boneyard refers to an historical creek that runs close by. There is a crew of us around that witnessed him dancing in and out of the shop when he was starting out radiating energy and passion for all things! Good Memories!
What a fun episode! I loved all your shawls! My most worn shawl is the Plumpy by Andrea Mowry. My most recent (and most intricate one) is the Aeria Shawl by Linnea Ornstein. One of my favorites to knit was Whale Watching by Lynn Everett.
Wishing you much success with the new pattern! (PS: Like others mentioned, there are so many easy ways to mend knitting. I mean, I suppose if you don't wear it either way, it kinda doesn't matter. still just saying!)
Thank Hou so Munch for amazing inspiration and a trip Down memory Lane with Shawls. Your Knits Arne beautiful and your Colour combo is fantastic and inspiring. The utility shawl is beautiful I’ll make one for my mum i love the design ❤
Knitted the boneyard shawl with Halloween colors and love it. Moths...ugh ... a mix of lavender oil and a little water in a spray bottle. They don't like lavender. I had them attack my yarn but this worked for me. I still spray my yarn closet once or twice a month . 🧶🧶🧶
Ahh was just looking for a scarf/shawl pattern for a special skein of fingering weitght yarn I have in my stash when I came across this video. Definitely going to check out your pattern for the Utility Shawl! 😊
Lovely collection of shawls…so nice to have the memories of knitting them. My favourite shawl pattern is The Playful Shawl by Meg Gadsbey. All garter stitch and very relaxing to knit. I’ve used all sorts of yarn and mixtures of colours…always get good results. It’s free on Ravelry. With dk yarn it takes two 100g balls. Your videos are so inspiring to watch 😊
My favorite shawl out of dozens I have knit is the Stillness Shawl by Helen Stewart. I also love my Pressed Flowers shawl by Amy Christoffers and the Ashton Shawlette by Dee O’Keefe. One other I love because of the shape is Vila Wrap also by Helen Stewart. I’ve done quite a few of Stephen’s MKALs. Love the process, don’t always love the finished object.
Lovely to see all your shawls, I knit so much shawls over the 30 plus years of knitting but I give away most of them. Already planning for the Utility shawl but have to finish a sweater first.
Loved this video and congratulations on your pattern release! I knitted the moon whistle shawl because of you and your version and I agree with you: it was pure joy to make (and I’ve worn it loads!)
That was very inspiring, Jonathan! Thank you for sharing your shawl journey with us! Shawls...I taught myself to knit during the pandemic so I haven't been doing it long but I've knit or crocheted 14 shawls in that time. Even though I just don't wear them, there's a few more that I want to make hanging around in my Ravelry queue. (Paris Toujours, Trimek or Brette by Rastus Hsu, Arda by Ethan Pyle...my ambitious list goes on) It might be a weather thing - I live in Los Angeles - but I think its more likely style. Not really my style. My favorite, and what gets the most wear, is really more of a scarf (does that count?) Its called 'From Me With Love' available on Ravelry or from mYak and knit in their baby yak/silk fingering. Perfect for LA weather, wonderfully soft and doesn't make me feel like I'm wearing a target. 🙄
Jonathan! How fun this episode was. I love shawls and you gave me some great ideas. i will definitely buy and knit your utility shawl. Thank you for sharing. Patricia from California
Just purchased your utility shawl and so excited to use those special one skeins picked up during my travels. Your shawl pattern inspired me to frog some languishing wips and move onto this awesome pattern. Thanks for sharing your creativity and youness! ❤
One of my most recent favorite shawls I did was the Haplander by Anne Hanson - there is a triangle version and a traditional square version. For the Wool-A-Long we used Bare Naked Wool's British Jacob Sport, Shetlandia Sport, Wensleydale Sport, East Friesian Sport and Oxford Sport. It's probably my favorite shawl right now. Love the review of all the shawls you've done. Last year I did a set of retrospectives of all the shawls I've made. So fun to look back over them. I'll keep your shawl in mind for some single skeins I've got! I've got a spot at the March retreat next year, really looking forward to it! :)
Love your podcast! I remember your first. You are wonderful at promoting the joy of knitting. Your explanation of how to get out of a knitting funk described me perfectly! Nothing seems right, you’re not enthused about anything. I hit one of those times this summer, so I ordered yarn for the base and used colorwork from my stash for the yokeI. Including your favorite colors really helps. I’m making the Celeste sweater/jumper to you, from Petite Knit. I really enjoy knitting colorwork and I now I’ve split for the body and it’s only been a week! My mojo is back😁👍🏻
I have knitted many Stephen West shawls, my favourites being The ExplorationStation and DottedRays. I've also knitted at least a dozen Sophie Scarfs making them longer and bigger. I wanted something warmer (living in Finland) Your Utility Shawl is perfect, warm and cozy and so many possibilities to play with different colours!! So of course I purchased it immediately, thank you very much, Jonathan! Very enjoyable video
It’s very hard to pick a favourite. I agree with you that The Boneyard is great for beginners. Otherwise three by Stephen West Marled Magic, Vertices Unite and Starflake. Two by Natasja Hornby Corbis and Artus
Ouch - not feeling the love for Malabrigo yarns 😢. Yes, Malabrigo does still exist and their sock yarn is still my favourite. I love their variety of colours and find their yarn a dream to knit with, not to mention there are two dozen yarns weights and blends to try. ❤️
Turn your happy memory shawls into throw pillows so you can enjoy them. Also, have you tried freezing the moth-eaten items instead of segregating them.
Your shawls are beautiful. I’ve stopped knitting the giant shawls of Stephen and Andrea and will soon cast on your Utility Shawl as I now find the smaller ones more wearable.
Ok Johnathon, take it easy buddy. I just started watching you latest video about all the shawls you have knit......you are coming across a little snooty. Sure, your knitting has improved over the years but not a reason to put down the yarn or the style etc. You are fun to watch but you are not "all that." Have a little humility, honor your work from the past and keep in mind some of your viewers could be knitting that pattern or using the yarn you just insulted. Gratitude Growth with Respect Make room for others who might be just beginning
Jonathan? dont rip back on the shawl, do a patch work like mending a sock? You put so much work and time and its a memory of a time for you. If it was a bad memory , then i would rip out....
I love all your shawls. I have the boneyard pattern but I have not knitted yet. You gave me confidence to cast it on. I’m excited now to start it. I would love to see you design more patterns. You are so talented. Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing knitting with us!
Love your idea of using the bracelet on your shawls!

Great info! I went to college in Champaign/Urbana.
What a great episode! I love, love, love the Andrea Mowry Satellite Shawl. How did I miss seeing that one before?! Thanks for a great episode!
Thank you for sharing love your shawls
They all look great with your basic black tee! Love your new pattern, super clever to knit in the round! Heading over to Ravelry!

Forgot to say the utility shawl looks fabulous
a fabulous collection/selection of shawls lovely work, as usual keep taking care xxxxx
Check out visible mending for your Boneyard. It could be amazing with lime green or other contrasting color
The Opus looks great on you…colors are beautiful!!
Opus shawl is one of my favorites, I just purchased the Utility shawl and look forward to knitting it!
This was such a fun episode! I always enjoy your videos. Thank you!!

Your shawls are gorgeous! I love them all, but I love the Kinship shawl the most!
Congrats on the pattern release. I do love a pattern roundup video, especially ones with some oldies but goodies.
Lovely to see all your shawls, I knit so much shawls over the 30 plus years of knitting but I give away most of them. Already planning for the Utility shawl but have to finish a sweater first.
Enjoyed seeing your shawl collection 🧶

Boneyard was my first shawl too ! It got stolen at a concert back in 2018. I'm still mad about it, maybe because it was silk and cashmere yarn.
Congratulations on your new shawl! I added it in ralvery and can’t wait to knit it! Yay!
Jonathan! How fun this episode was. I love shawls and you gave me some great ideas. i will definitely buy and knit your utility shawl. Thank you for sharing. Patricia from California

Congratulations on a beautiful shawl journey PLUS the release of your Utility Shawl pattern!! I’ve got it in my favorites and in my cart on Ravelry. 😉
Beautiful - love the Utility shawl. Just stumbled on the Opus a few weeks ago, love seeing your version.
Thank you! Max has done a hat and cowl in the Opus stitch pattern too which is lovely.
Please do more mini Irish lessons!
Good Morning Jonathan😊 Your Utility Shawl is lovely. I just purchased 😊
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy it!
The moth holes provide an opportunity for some visible mending! (or more traditional darning techniques if you've got similar yarn)
In like the Age of Brass and Steam Shawl. Less complex than SWest patterns.
Ouch - not feeling the love for Malabrigo yarns 😢. Yes, Malabrigo does still exist and their sock yarn is still my favourite. I love their variety of colours and find their yarn a dream to knit with, not to mention there are two dozen yarns weights and blends to try. ❤️
Amargo means bitter in Spanish. So color of Daybreak is bitter chocolate.

Oh my goodness, using the cuff that way on the Opus shawl is genius! Where did you get that cuff???
Where did you get your shawl cuff? I'm looking forward to knitting the utility shawl!
I really enjoyed watching your shawl journey. Please put your mothy shawls in the freezer for 48 hours. Have a great day.😂
