The trade of 4th and Laine for the 5th pick doesn’t seem equitable for Columbus. Good deal for Montreal. Columbus gets rid of an unwanted contract without really losing their draft selection seems ok but Waddell ask for a prospect too. Montreal helps out Columbus but potentially could see the trade tip dramatically in their favor if Laine somehow regains his form.
Remember when Laine said he would make the leafs regret passing on him , if he could regain some of that confidence in Montreal, he could be deadly for the habs . Him, dach , and newhook on the 2nd line 😊

So your idea is to load up Columbus on bad contracts and do this same swap which would have actually given space to add quality playe down the line? I’m sad that Crosby doesn’t seem to be pushing for trade to habs. Crosby and his buddy Johnson were talking before their own draft about how one day he would like to play for habs.
after seeing Washington willing to take on PLD's entire contract I cant see that a situation where Laine cant bring back some level of a positive return even if it means salary retention. If though the entire league has soured on his contract and Columbus is of the mind that retention is unacceptable then sure although at the very least for optics sake I imagine they would demand at least some level of prospect(s) going back
I see that as an absolute steal for the habs, I could see dvo for laine + the draft spots swaps, and even then im not sure columbus is happy with it. Maybe a bundle including dvo/mitch stephens as a center going the other way, + a prospect for laine. Dvo makes too much to make it a true cap dump if we send him the other way, but mitch stephens could step up as a 4C and fill in during the transitional phase, i liked what i saw from him last year. Then lets send a solid, promising young defenseman like barron/struble. I think that is closer to what both teams would want.

I am a CBJ fan and I don't think this works in order to get the salary off the books. The initial proposed trade makes a little more sense. I don't like it much either but the Jackets would get a Center back and they really need Centers. Your idea is worth pondering though and would be a unique approach. Dropping from 4-5 likely isn't going to hurt the Jackets much. Question for you. I know that in MLB, the league has to approve any trades. Is that true of the NHL as well? Follow up question if that is the case... Would the league approve the trade you're proposing?
What is the Habs record if Laine, Tiffolli, and Beck make the team? Dvorak and Anderson out?

MTL should avoid Laine period. He hasn't played a full season since 2018-19 and the Habs already have Price's contract to deal with for 2 more years. Why would they want to risk adding Laine's heavy contract to the problem?
Your concerns would be valid if the Habs were up tight against the cap but they won't be for the foreseeable future. Plus, they might trade Price like they did with Weber a few years back.

Actually not. That is a big contract for a player who played only 2 full seasons when he started then hasn't played a full season in the past 5 and not contributing much. Columbus is looking to make the playoffs Laine isn't your guy.
Freeing up $8.7mil has to be worth something. Dropping 1 spot in the draft could be the price Waddell is willing to pay, especially if the play they want is still on the board.

Laine just had two back to back PPG seasons before this one, and a team could have a potential ppg 30 goal guy at 4.5x2? Just doesn’t make sense
