I read once that Killing Me Softly was written by Roberta Flack after seeing Don Mclean perform. Gretchen Peters is my Don McLean, Killing Me Softly with her songs.
Lori Lieberman, actually. Roberta's vocals were awesome and definitely helped it top the charts, but I don't think she was a part of the collaboration with Fox and Gimbel to initially write it. In any case, high (and deserved) praise.
Gretchen Peters is a poet and prophet at the very top of the pyramid of songwriting, in my mind. (The only other person who's at the top for me is Leonard Cohen.) And then there is that voice of hers - so beautiful and full of expression. Blackbirds is one of the best albums I've ever heard in my life. Gretchen just keeps getting better. Beautiful.
I love the songs she writes, too! A couple other great singer/ songwriters I know of are Patty Griffin and Kim Richey. Just thought I'd let you know in case you like them too!
Joni, Bob, Leonard, Paul, Van, Neil and Gretchen are in the same echelon. Some touch your soul, others your heart and some speak to your mind. But Gretchen pulls on all strings with a delicate balance of unassuming sympathy.
That was breathtaking. This was played on Facebook as a tribute to Trevor Duffin from Hound Music and Antisocial Network Radio. He was a good friend and mentor to many. I will miss him a lot. Beautifully done Gretchen ♫♥♫

Somewhat haunting and stunningly beautiful song! Gretchen Peters' voice is superb.
