    According to some recommendations....I will be running the air pump longer than just a few minutes. I have really no experience growing plants long term in water.

    I put it into bigger bottom glass vase I bought in dollar store near me. Also I change water every 2 weeks.

    the smell is from the algae as the water is getting too much light - if you paint the glas-jars black (or any dark colour/color) then „bad“ algae will not grow, or, alternately add a couple of amano-shrimps and they will keep the algae in check

    I grew a monster deliciosa in the back of my fish tank for years-warm, oxygenated water plus fish waste=perfect environment for plant roots 👍 Your plants would really appreciate a little air for a longer time. You could split that air hose a couple times and oxygenate several vessels at once. I’d recommend a corded air pump running all day, but it doesn’t have to be very strong.

    I’ve had golden pothos and monstera deliciosa growing out of the top of an aquarium for about 3 years now. The pothos vines are probably 10’ long and the leaves are HUGE (I’ve pinned them up on the wall behind). The monstera is healthy and has gorgeous roots, but the leaves haven’t fully sized up or fenestrated like my potted one has.

      @mandylarsen6400 - So happy to hear this! Thanks for sharing. My monstera (in water) has produced new highly fenestrated leaves but I give it a lot of light. So in case you were wondering, I doubt the lack of fenestration is because it is growing in water.

      @@TaraB1134 cool thanks! I’ve been considering actually taking the lid off the aquarium and hanging a big grow light from the ceiling for both the aquatic plants and everything I could grow out the top. It seems a bit excessive but it would be beautiful!

    Great video. Enjoy seeing what you are up to. I currently have about 21 plants growing with a passive hydroponic system. I have only been doing this for about 4 months now so I can’t speak to longevity. I made up my mind I was not interested in messing about with pH or filtered water. My plants all have been told they have to thrive on tap water - chlorine and all. So far, I have not been fertilizing and even without fertilizer, my Peace Lily and Alocasia (Silver Dragon) have flowered for me. I also have succulents in water and my Tacisedum hybridbis flowering! Jades grow really well in water (who knew?). So far, only two plants have started demanding fertilizer (and I will comply): my Monstera Peru and my Peace Lily. I suspect my String of Pearls would like some fertilizer too but I’m not sure yet. Anyway, it was the Monstera that got me started on hydroponics as I saw another video on growing them in tap water. What a happy camper it is! I do have an aquarium air pump and stone which I have not really used yet because I was unsure how long to run it. Instead, I simply change out the water frequently to re-oxygenate. My system would not be for people who have too many plants. I change the water every 2 or 3 days. I manually take the plant to the sink and tip out the old and inspect the roots. If any slime is discovered, I take a toothbrush and scrub them! I also scrub out the container at least every 3 or 4 weeks. I use marbles to stage the plant height and support roots occasionally as they clean up better than clay balls. However, my Philodendron Brasíl is growing in LECA and is very happy. If it gets too slimy I will uproot it and scrub the clay balls and roots and repot. LOL. My version of hydroponics is NOT for the faint hearted. 😂

      Just know if you use reverse osmosis or distilled water and add your nutrients you better check the pH because there is no buffer in distilled or reverse osmosis water. You can buy a carbon filter and it does not remove the minerals which are what buffer the water but I check my pH everytime I mix up nutrients solution and it usually is a 3 or 3.5 until I add some ph up or about one-third of tap water although my tap water I have a inline filter to remove chlorine but I do think mixing tap water filtered preferably with reverse osmosis water may be the best bet but then you may have a nutrient deficiency for all of the micronutrients or minerals because reverse osmosis or distilled water do not have minerals so I suggest reading about it until you understand it because if you crash your pH and don't even know it you will kill your plant

    You should really put a check valve on that air pump!! If the power ever fails at your house the water may start back flowing to the pump itself and cause some pretty nasty damages or even an electrical fire!!

    I love the airstone, i wonder how much benefit it is turning it on for only a few mins. Only wondering bc I used to have fish, like my entire life I had freshwater tanks of various varieties and my last tank was planted... when the power would go out and the air would stop being introduced the fish and snails would go to the top of the tank to get air and once the power would be back on, they would quickly go back down the water that once again had air flow. I know plants and fish aren't the same but it's just got me wondering since plants are also "breathing". My planted tank had a lot of losses but also a lot of growth and I never noticed anything with them and power outages but tbh I was more concerned about my fish and snails suffering...

    This was timely as I put my out of control monstera on the back deck last weekend. I desperately need to repot it. I don't want to grow it in just water. I had many, many fishtanks over the last 50 years. I am done playing in water, but I do need to find something to do with this Monstera. It has very long petials (?), the space from the node to the leaf, and it has not put out a new leaf in a couple of months. It has out grown it's spot. What can I do with it? I would love it to be nice and compact like yours is. This thing is 4 feet tall. Any ideas?

    I’m not sure if “a few minutes once a week” is enough to really do anything. If I remember from a hydroponics video I watched, I think they said for fully submerged roots, they suggested running the aeration for 12-24 hours a day! Of course, your container is much smaller than a commercial hydroponic setup, but your pump is much smaller too. I’m sure there’s some chart of rate of air flow per unit volume of water.. but I wouldn’t really know where to start looking.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just look at it as if you change out the water once a week....I have no scientific backing of my approach, but it's a starting point haha

    I’m not sure using the airstone actually forces oxygen into water. Diana Walstad looks at this belief in her book on the ecology of the aquarium. I think just changing the water weekly is enough. Ready to be corrected, though. I like these videos.

    • @EverythingPlants

    Air pumps do not add oxygen to water. Air pumps move air, which can help dissolve oxygen already present, but they do not add or generate any meaningful amount of additional oxygen for aquatic systems. Only dedicated oxygenation systems can actively increase oxygen in water.
