The dev cube for the heretic leader's boss fight is for the fighter itself. When you jump on its sides, it tilts slightly. As you walk around on top of it, it tilts with your weight.
Thank you for making me realize that I didn't even check and am kinda dumb lol I never go on the thing, I just fight the heretic leader from the ground. 16 years of bad habits I suppose!
To be more specific, it’s an anchor for the physics of the ship. Since the ship is floating, it can’t use global gravity. The anchor cube makes it so the ship can move around slightly and then return to its default position without falling. We see a similar effect achieved with the platform on midship, but that’s done by making that platform a Mach object, iirc. It actually can be displaced from its home!
Well this is a pleasant surprise… Halo 2 is always gonna be one of those “what if” games for all the content that was cut. I love the product we got but all the ViDocs and such really make you appreciate the salvage work that had to be done. (Even if it was hell on Earth for Bungie at the time)
I'm glad that, at the very least, we'll soon be able to play a couple cut versions of the levels! I only hope we'll eventually get to see everything Bungie had worked on prior to the restart, as there's a lot more to both versions of the campaigns to be had (like more Earth levels, and how Quarantine Zone is comprised of only 20% of what was modelled)
Hopefully one day we can fully see or play what was planned. On the upside though its not like we get shafted. Halo 2 was really good despite what happened behind the scenes and Halo 3 was amazing and a really good send off for the Trilogy and no doubt was a lot easier on the devs health. Combine that with Bungie being able to experiment and flesh out Halo with ODST and Reach I think in the end it worked out. Bungie learned a lot of important lessons from Halo 2 that I'm sure they still carry to this day in some fashion.

12:31 I think this actually explains why there is an Easter egg in that level where you can actually find a plasma rifle that shoots scarab ammo. This one in the cutscene must be the same one you can find in the level which is so cool. It's also a skull in mcc that let's and weapon and even warthogs fire scarab bullets when you fire or honk.
a scarab gun actually spawns for every instance of the scarabs firing sequence, that scene where its shooting through the roof onto the warthog if you noclip out of it and fly to where the beam starts you can pick up the scarab gun just as you can in the easter egg
Yep, I think every level except for the great journey has a scarab gun use the scarab effect. Here's a video of an old-school tricker getting the outskirts scarab gun a couple of ways. You can see in this video when they show the scarab outside of the tunnel (at 10:15) it is actually using a scarab gun that you can grab with some trickery th-cam.com/video/fisWowh0yEA/w-d-xo.html
Actually every single usable vehicle in the game has a weapon. Even the horns for the human vehicles are considered weapons. The mounted turrets are also vehicles so that characters can operate the turrets, with a weapon tag assigned to the turrets so that they can actually fire.
The Hunter's different sized arms make sense for that species as they aren't just a hulking semi-humanoid being but a colony of thousands of wormlike creatures that exist together in a collective state, somewhat like a school of fish or a flock of birds. To that end, the ultimate form of the Hunter can be whatever the colony needs it to be, though they find it easier to take on a roughly bipedal form when dealing with other bipeds. But, since the cannon requires less strength to lift than the shield (which is literally a piece of hull armor), it makes sense that they would need to devote fewer individuals to the cannon "arm" than the shield "arm".
Okay okay I never got into Halo past the games... HUNTERS ARE WHAT?! So you're saying they're basically Durge from the 2003 Clone Wars? Just a bunch of worms? That's why they're so hard to kill? Yikes
@@barragethree5047 Another interesting detail about hunters is that when the worm colonies get too big they split into 2 colonies. The 2 colonies then maintain an extremely deep and close bond, which is why they're called bond brothers. That's why Hunters always come in pairs. It's also why 1 hunter will go crazy when you kill the other. Because it's like you killed their twin who they used to be conjoined with.
10:30 Every time a scarab fires in-game, a floating Scarab Gun is loaded in to do so. If the player is exactly where the Gun spawns at the right moment (before it despawns), they can actually pick it up. If done, the Scarab shooting the warthog will actually stop firing, because you're now holding its gun. Grabbing this Scarab Gun was achieved by Dantheman87 in like, 2005. Mind-blowing stuff. Edit: I jumped the gun and you point this out at 13:30 lol! Except, it's not a Scarab Gun in a joking way - it's LITERALLY a Scarab Gun, haha! Amazing video!
something i kinda love in cairo station is how the flat image stations are actually just taken from the cairo station model, so you can see that they all have a single frigate docked to them
I’ve been having one hell of a time exploring Halo 2 map extents with Acrophobia. Managed to totally break the Quarantine Zone gondola by taking the human side.
13:34 If I remember right, that scarab gun can be picked up in an out of bounds area. It involves getting into a Banshee in the section right after the tunnel and flying out of bounds (you aren't supposed to take a banshee into the tunnel, so it requires luring an enemy Banshee to follow you through).
The second clip of this video shows someone getting the second metropolis scarab gun some 14 years ago. I dunno how the levels are laid out but I'm pretty sure metropolis has 2 separate scarab guns. If you performed the trick to get the one from the scarab then got the one on the bridges you could dual wield them! th-cam.com/video/PacjohShi38/w-d-xo.html
@@devinduplantis2155 it does have 2 seperate guns. If I recall, the timing for the second scarab gun is pretty tight in order to grab it. It’s probably trivial with the introduction of Acrophobia now, but it’s still cool nonetheless.
This is probably my all time favorite game. While I usually have little interest in the games, but still enjoy the episodes, this ones gonna be special to me.
Me too, this game was the first shooter I ever played and it quickly became a huge part of my childhood. This game will always be my most favourite game if all time, everything about it is just perfect to me. No other game comes close.
I'm a Halo 3 guy myself, but the whole original trilogy is just bottled fuckin lighting. Perfect games, the ultimate masterclass in FPS storytelling and mechanics
Such a nostalgia trip for me. My Dad and I played the crap out of Halo 1 and 2 back in the day. Seeing Ascension, or as we liked to call it The Bowl of Death, brought back many a memory of LAN games with my Dad at my Grandma's house.
The exhaust on Cairo station is actually a really cool detail that makes a lot of sense from a physics perspective. When the round fires, it would impart a lot of recoil on the station, and so the station would have to fire off a thruster to compensate.
Honestly I think Halo 2 could have been it's own series of videos with just how much there is to it: Even in normal gameplay without debug tools there's so many ways to get out of the map, to say nothing of all the ways some of those out of bounds areas tie into cut content (like the cut warthog run at the end of high charity the green/blue beam is tied to which still has geometry inside the game files that modders have even fully restored), and all of what we know about cut content too, including like full storyboards for earlier versions of the game's plot back before so many missions got cut.
2:58 This part here was actually unintentional. By the time Joe was close to finalizing this cutscene, the floor was remodelled to have a dip in it, causing the characters to float as they walked away from the door.
15:36 That is _absolutely_ the anchor point for the ship. If you've got the right set of skulls on, you can make that thing dance with explosions. It spins on the axis of that cube.
For the station dropping, if you jump at the right time, you go flying out of the map... I tend to time my jump around the creaking sound just before the gravity goes weird.
They put more detail into the Cairo Station gun that I realized. I knew about all the mechanisms, however those jets of gas beneath are probably for counteracting the force of the tungsten rod firing (Newton's 3rd law). Since the rod is magnetically accelerated the gas isn't likely to be a byproduct of firing, just for station keeping. If that's the case, they really thought it through even though we can't see it ever.
11:50 You missed two of the most important details. One: This room is explained and shown in the leaked storyboards. Two: The wall biomass bleeds if shot (acting just like flood biomass walls in Halo 3, just earlier), because this is the last remaining piece of a cut boss room from Forerunner Tank.
This unlocked a memory I had about going accidently oob in Halo 3. I was doing coop and clipped through a covenant ship. I stood on the very top of a ramp, crouched, stood up, to get some hi-ground on them and the next thing I know, I was inside of the oob part of the ship where random grunts and elites were spawned with their weapons stacked up against each other, as they lay ragdolled in the black void... I quickly tried to get back to the play field because I was a bit uneasy going oob lol
Halo 2 is actually the game that got me interested in finding out-of bounds bugs and exploits in video games because of how easy it was to do in parts of the game.
That scarab gun is notorious for being collectable via out of bounds. Probably an easter egg, but it is nice to see it also had a cinematic function in that same level. Also Monkey King in Chinese definitely sounds like a Dragon Ball / Journey to the West reference.
One thing you might not have noticed in the level The Arbiter is that if you follow the dropships that drop you off at the start of the level, they don't actually de-load at all and eventually crash into the side of the map and then fall down to the bottom. It's really funny!
Finally! :D Your lack of Halo content all these years actually got me into Halo out of bounds exploring and later on creating content myself (way inferior ofc since the devtools werent released then) - always looking forward for more!
Really enjoying your commentary and presentation, Snipey! You're doing absolutely great so far, I hope you're enjoying your new roll and that things are going well for both you and Shesez. Hope you both have a great day, Eli
This video is incredible. I remember years ago when I enabled the debug cam on my modded xbox and was able to see behind the scenes in these cutscenes for the first time. It absolutely blew my mind lol. So cool to finally see a video showing and explaining it!
You know Snipey, you are pretty awesome. I'm glad you're co-hosting B.B. If it hasn't been said yet (I'm sure it has, but what the heck) Welcome to the channel!
3:14, When I first played this game at 7 years old, I was always confused by this cutscene and I tried to match it up! I went over to the gondola and was upset that it was blocking what I imagined what the view was. Little did I know that there was no perfect way of finding it without debug mode! Thanks for sharing this, it's a great video!
no joke, as im finishing this vid, termacious trickocity makes a trickshot montage in halo 2 going reallyhigh/far out of bounds with grenades and stuff. also thank you for covering halo 2. its my favorite game ever so seeing it like this is really nice
5:41 Probably done this way because fading out objects was easier in the engine than having two separate cameras render to the screen with partial opacity at the same time (which would roughly double the render time).
I agree - the Xbox probably couldn't handle two full-resolution cameras at the same time due to video memory constraints. You can fade from a static shot into a live one no problem, but two live shots fading dynamically is impossible without trickery like this.
Ah, the ever elusive scarab gun at 13:34. My friend and I spent all day on multiple occasions trying to get that thing. We discovered a TH-cam video in 2005 that showed a person using the grenade vehicle flip glitch to get out of the map boundaries and follow a long path around to get that weapon. We eventually made it to the spot but there was no weapon. Needless to say we were quite sad
The "Scarab Gun" around the corner IS a scarab gun you can take while its spawn in map, I've done in coop in metropolis, I theorize it can be done in the great journey but have never tried
I don't think it's in the map as a plasma rifle in great journey, but the possibility always captivated me. I think the closest thing to the scarab gun is some of the more recent trickers doing memory manipulation to have the second player become the scarab turret lol th-cam.com/video/QoS-PICmE0M/w-d-xo.html
Surprised it wasn’t mentioned that on “The Arbiter” when the mission starts that if you watch the two Phantoms fly off they crash into each other causing their physics to bounce them off each other. They then tend to just spiral out of control in random directions. Not a wild detail but one that stuck with me every time I play Halo 2.
There is no possible way to be depressed, since you joined Shesez and y'all drop a new video every week. This is now my favorite game covered. Soo many memories. I really wanna see Red Dead Revolver and/or Red Faction on PS2. Please and thank you.
2:58 Oh actually this one was just a mistake. Joe the cinematic director points it out in the dev commentary for the game, the modellers added that dip in the ground after the cinematic was animated and it was too late to change
Wow... When I was little, I always tried to match the cutscene camera's POV after the cutscene ended and always found that things were proportioned differently.. Now I know why!! Thanks so much!

You are doing a big service to video game lovers! I think most people just enjoy that it works and not how it works. Thank you for the content for the people that are interested in the hows and whys!
Forgive me if im wrong, wasn't Halo 3 the best Halo game? My friend used to scream Halo 3 all day, altho i never played any of them except Halo infinite this year.
Man that Great journey/Uprising level is one of my favorite campaign missions/maps of the entire series. Those missions were so fun and that environment felt so open. It's cool seeing where two levels connect on the same map
This was a really good choice, I would love to see more of Bungies Halo games, and a more in depth look at all of the classic and newer multiplayer maps. This boundary break shows the genius of classic Bungie studios, it's really cool to see how they pulled off one of the greatest games of all time.
@16:30 I was actually able to beat Johnson into the scarab back in the day doing a grenade jump with the sputnik skull. Funny enough, they never intended for you to play beside his character model as the arbiter because all of his idle dialog refers to the player as Chief
13:37 You can actually get the scarab gun with a helpful walkthrough. It's a challenge, but so fun when you get it! And a giant soccerball. 16:47 If your fast enough, you can actually meet him. Even though your arbiter, he calls you chief. That's why he is not meant to speak to you. XD Yes I done these things myself years ago. It was fun!
21:30 This is most likely done followingly: in addition for the standard model, the elite model is rendered again with an energy shield texture. During that, in its shader, the model's each vertex is displaced along its normal, giving the model more "volume". Because some faces use separate vertices, you can see the mesh split.
23:09 while it’s not stated in-game, the Hunters have weird proportions because they aren’t a single entity. They’re actually a bunch of hive minded worms occupying and puppeteering multiple armor pieces. So “body” only has enough armor parts as it functionally needs.
This was so cool to see! I especially loved the looks at the character models and some of their finer details and animations up close that we may not have noticed during gameplay
15:26. I'm not sure, but I think the room itself does start falling. I remember playing this game a lot of times and jumping right before the room starts falling only for me to "fly up" in the sky because the room falls faster than your regular falling speed, eventually killing me after a few seconds of falling
This was a great video, so much I never realized happening in the background. Like the spaceships actually being guns and even firing. I hope you revisit this game with the MCC graphics and use the graphics toggle feature to compare the new and old versions of the game. Also, that underwater elevator had a huge overall with the MCC graphics.
Just a few days ago I asked for a Halo 2 Boundary Break... And here it is! Also I'm surprised you didn't talk about the unused Warthog Run in Gravemind.
13:33 That's likely why the Scarab gun exists as an Easter Egg in that particular level. Ether it needed to be stored somewhere, or they thought it would be a fun secret. Considering its placed deliberately above a traffic cone, I assume its the latter, or both. Still, its very interesting to learn it had an actual use in the game.
"Master Chief, care to tell me what you're doing on Boundary Break?" "Sir, taking a camera anywhere I want to try and find secrets and discoveries in some of my favorite games."
The Space cutscene room for the end of the game is always loaded in Great Journey. You can get to it without the use of mods via a Specter clip or Arbitrary Unit Possession to be able to fly passed the barriers with a banshee.
I just gave it a watch. It's cool to see some of the more modern tricks on the CMNeir channel haha. I really enjoyed the Grumpy, Harc, and Bizz videos on that topic a year or so back. Didn't know there was still so much to learn about that space. Great work to all of you. I really do enjoy in depth dives and modding research done on Halo 2 because I just wanna know every tiny detail about the game.
@@devinduplantis2155 Harc and those guys are fantastic. AUP is such a beautiful discovery especially for a Halo game. It really opens up the doors to some pretty neat stuff. With the reintroduction of restarting during a cutscene, Harc was able to actually grab the BSP for the flood infested Gravemind level and play it in The Great Journey. Termacious Trickocity made a video on it.

Thank you for the multiplayer zoom outs. The nostalgia really didn't kick in until then.
Something about that part really hit me too. Could hear and picture all the good times as it zoomed further out.
I love all this amazing content this guy keeps us entertained with
13:45
So THAT'S why the Scarab Gun exists! I always thought it was just added into the game as a goof/easter egg to find, but it has and actual use!
Really enjoying your commentary and presentation, Snipey! You're doing absolutely great so far, I hope you're enjoying your new roll and that things are going well for both you and Shesez.
Hope you both have a great day,
Eli
I may have missed it but why is it not shesez anymore?
This video is incredible. I remember years ago when I enabled the debug cam on my modded xbox and was able to see behind the scenes in these cutscenes for the first time. It absolutely blew my mind lol. So cool to finally see a video showing and explaining it!
It’s awesome to see Halo stuff on this channel!
Fuck me, Halo 2 had such a masterpiece of a soundtrack.
You know Snipey, you are pretty awesome. I'm glad you're co-hosting B.B. If it hasn't been said yet (I'm sure it has, but what the heck) Welcome to the channel!
Literally any halo game. Please! So good
3:14, When I first played this game at 7 years old, I was always confused by this cutscene and I tried to match it up!
Saw that also, seems today has blessed halo 2.
Yeah you have to hit the loading zone in the tunnel
The "Scarab Gun" around the corner IS a scarab gun you can take while its spawn in map, I've done in coop in metropolis, I theorize it can be done in the great journey but have never tried
I don't think it's in the map as a plasma rifle in great journey, but the possibility always captivated me. I think the closest thing to the scarab gun is some of the more recent trickers doing memory manipulation to have the second player become the scarab turret lol
th-cam.com/video/QoS-PICmE0M/w-d-xo.html
This was very sweet, kind of refueled my childlike curiosities I used to have many more of as a kid when playing vidya. Good video
Surprised it wasn’t mentioned that on “The Arbiter” when the mission starts that if you watch the two Phantoms fly off they crash into each other causing their physics to bounce them off each other. They then tend to just spiral out of control in random directions. Not a wild detail but one that stuck with me every time I play Halo 2.
super enjoyed this episode !!!! halo 2 is one of my favourite games of all time. glad snipey got to host it !!!! it was a lot of fun
There is no possible way to be depressed, since you joined Shesez and y'all drop a new video every week. This is now my favorite game covered. Soo many memories.
I really wanna see Red Dead Revolver and/or Red Faction on PS2. Please and thank you.
My favorite game of all time! I LOVE learning from these new perspectives. Like spy chief watching the soon-to-be Arbiter’s trial
I have a deep love for Halo 2, this was the first video in a while that I actually learned things and I loved it. Thank you!
Halo is my favorite series and Halo 2 is one of my favorite games period. Thank you for making videos on this franchise, and I definitely would love to see you cover more games in the series
@9:50 So the truth is, we never go away.
- We just shrink into nothing...
...how deep, & profound! Btw, I really like the original cutscenes being represented in the corner like that while we watch the behind-the-scenes magic play out 👍GG👍
I never played Halo 2 but I stayed for the whole video anyway cause this is one of my favourite channels. Every episode is fascinating, even if you've never played the game.
You are doing a big service to video game lovers! I think most people just enjoy that it works and not how it works. Thank you for the content for the people that are interested in the hows and whys!
It’s so funny hearing anybody BUT the usual Halo guys mention GeneralHeed!
YEAH! HE MADE A VIDEO ON THE BEST HALO GAME!!
2 still looks pretty good today. Shows what good design choices can do to a project
@@marti5420
Yes, but also intensive use of high end technology…
Forgive me if im wrong, wasn't Halo 3 the best Halo game?
My friend used to scream Halo 3 all day, altho i never played any of them except Halo infinite this year.
@@sk.mahdeemahbubsamy2857
Probably for the multi? The best campaigns are 3 and reach.
@@sk.mahdeemahbubsamy2857 halo 3 was the best one yes
Great job on the video! Love Halo 2 so it's awesome to see it on here
3:02 The reason why they are floating is because the dip in the floor was made after the cinematic was already finished
I love hearing guest's commentary when they're really knowledgeable. It's super neat. Nice.
13:42 It's astounding to think that this tiny detail could be the entire reason for the creation of the scarab gun Easter egg.
GOAT game and GOAT episode, thank yall for this nostalgia trip. I would spend hours running around out of bound in this game with my friends.
XD
Yes I done these things myself years ago. It was fun!
So THAT'S what the legendary Scarab Gun is for.
Master Chief, you mind telling me what you're doing outside that ship?
Sir... *noclips away*
Finally! you made the halo CE video what feels like ages ago, so excited to see this
Awesome video! So crazy seeing these levels from this perspective!
That intro was great lol. Halo 2 is one of my favorite games ever if not my favorite and one of the best of all time
21:30 This is most likely done followingly:
in addition for the standard model, the elite model is rendered again with an energy shield texture. During that, in its shader, the model's each vertex is displaced along its normal, giving the model more "volume". Because some faces use separate vertices, you can see the mesh split.
Oh man! So pumped to watch this. I've been playing Halo (2) on Xbox Live since 2005.
23:09 while it’s not stated in-game, the Hunters have weird proportions because they aren’t a single entity. They’re actually a bunch of hive minded worms occupying and puppeteering multiple armor pieces. So “body” only has enough armor parts as it functionally needs.
Finally! Thank you so much for covering this!
You had a chance to open on a RvB note but bah.. Saw a Spartan looking at the camera and got excited lol. Wonderful to see all of this!
This was so cool to see! I especially loved the looks at the character models and some of their finer details and animations up close that we may not have noticed during gameplay
9:45 Regret’s carrier
13:12 Oh, So that's how it is (made)
the wholesomeness of someone not familiar with halo showing secrets to halo nerds is amazing
Look at the dedication and love that went into this. A far shot from craig
and the time crunch!
Craig was fixed before release
Just found your channel today. I saw that you consistently upload content and i like the out of bounds content, so i happily subscribed.
15:26. I'm not sure, but I think the room itself does start falling. I remember playing this game a lot of times and jumping right before the room starts falling only for me to "fly up" in the sky because the room falls faster than your regular falling speed, eventually killing me after a few seconds of falling
Snipey always has the best games! Shesez really wants us to get used to him for sure.
generalheed still rocking with halo after all these years. A true staple for halo content
I love we see another refresh of Halo. Extended length too!
Will see more refreshes?
This was a great video, so much I never realized happening in the background. Like the spaceships actually being guns and even firing.
I hope you revisit this game with the MCC graphics and use the graphics toggle feature to compare the new and old versions of the game.
Also, that underwater elevator had a huge overall with the MCC graphics.
1:57 "This demon... this Master Chief..."
Surprise !
I like how Johnson fully walks into the scarab before the cutscene, It adds immersion for those who like to measure such details.
Absolutely love halo 2 and LOVE you worked with General Heed 😌😌 been watching both of y’all forever
The debugging version of Halo 2 is so much fun to play around in.
@10:20 not sure if it can be done on the original, but on the remastered you can actually hop on out the tunnel while in game, weird stuff up there
Whoa, unexpected. My favorite halo game on my favorite day of the week. Right on.
I’ve waited so long for you to cover more of the Halo series
"Master Chief, care to tell me what you're doing on Boundary Break?"
"Sir, taking a camera anywhere I want to try and find secrets and discoveries in some of my favorite games."
15:37 I imagine this is to control the ships tilt physics. When you stand on it, the ship actually lowers depending on where you stand on it.
The Space cutscene room for the end of the game is always loaded in Great Journey. You can get to it without the use of mods via a Specter clip or Arbitrary Unit Possession to be able to fly passed the barriers with a banshee.
I was hoping to see someone mention AUP in the comments haha. Such a mind blowing trick. The "space hole" always captivated me.
@@devinduplantis2155 it is such a fun trick to do. Im glad I was able to cover it with CMNeir.
@@trombonerist2856 I hate AUP
aw man, nostalgia trip for doing the in-game boundary breaks on the original xbox with my buddy back in grade 8 following along to some youtube tutorials made in microsoft moviemaker lol
All the Cairo Station details are so cool. God classic Halo were some great games man.
Also had no idea Arbiter had an Elite face on his armor wtf that's nuts.
