The movements of the "evzones" ,the guards of the monument in front of the parliament has nothing to do with dance and it is full of symbolism. They walk slowly out of respect for those who gave their lives fighting for our country. They hit the floor so that the dead can "hear" their children who live on, due to their sacrifice. They create a bridge with their legs when they walk one towards the other in order to show that the nation needs unity in order to progress. They form the number 4 with their legs to remember the 4 centuries of enslavement ...this and many more. And of course they look so serious because it is the ultimate honor to be a guard there. As for the pon-pons that you mentioned, that was a trick our ancestors used, to hide something that served as a weapon on their shoe, back in the days of the Turkish conquest, since they were not allowed to carry guns. I thought that I should let you know a few things about evzones to make you understand why they are so different from the guards you have seen so far.
As a greek living in greece, I must say this video brought me tears and I m not sure why.. Living in Athens is kinda difficult for many reasons, so I guess sometimes we forget that our city has a beautiful side as well. Thanks for this trip, and I m glad you enjoyed it here ;)
Thanks so much for sharing! Sometimes it takes an outsiders point of view to remind us how special our home is! We loved our time in Athens! Thanks for the wonderful comment 💜
As a Greek I was living in Denmark for 2 years....I came back asap....Greece is unique and if you live abroad then you understand what you are missing !
Hi miss Maria, I have almost 10hrs layover in Greece this coming april, and I’ve been dreaming to see the Parthenon do you think I can make a visit for that period of time? I don’t know how far is that from the airport 😊
In Athens, according to the law, no building is allowed to be taller than the Acropolis. That’s the main reason why if you get high enough you can see pretty much everything from the city.
We were there this past June for two weeks and it truly is an amazing city. It was HOT. Even locals said it was hotter than usual. We were also amazed at all the graffiti. We did three days walking the city and then three days with a car. An amazing trip. Thanks for sharing your visit. Even though it has only been a month we have been back it brought back so many wonderful memories.
So happy to hear you guys enjoyed yourselves and we could bring back some good memories! We really enjoyed the cooler weather of the off season. Thanks for sharing!
I'm so excited for the new series! Greece is among the top countries I want to visit. I'll watch and rewatch all videos 😁😁.. Those foods look amazing, btw. I'm dying to try that coconut feta cheese and that falafel wrap looks stunning! Greece seems to have such good vibes and the history, the mythology, no need to say anything, what a country! 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
This is the first of your videos I watched. This is incredible. So much loving energy and enthusiasm. I love the mix between the grand monuments, the grungy back streets, the personal moments and meals, the majestic wide shots, the close ups, travel tips. It has it all!
6:14 Agora means marketplace but also means (and this is how the word was used in Ancient Greece) forum, because in agora ancient Athenians met to discuss politics. I hope you had a great time in my home country 😉
Great video! As a Greek I like it that more foreigners so their appreciation for Athens and other greek cities, because most just stay for a little while just to get to the islands and while that's not a bad thing, cities like Athens and Thessaloniki are underrated and have much to offer 😉
We totally agree! We loved our time roadtripping and seeing a lot of what this beautiful country has to offer! We do still want to visit islands though one day!
I was in Greece a couple of decades ago. Spent a lot of time in Athens and was blown away by its beauty. I fell in love with Greece, with the mainland actually, and I cried the whole way back on the return trip to the U.S. Greece is a very special place in ways I can't even begin to explain.
Wow ..am excited to see the the beauty of Greece. Very unique place. You both amazing sammy and tommy . When i was in high school learning literature about Greece now you show us here in different places in Greece so great to see. Love to see your travel experiences .Keep safe to the both of you. Enjoy😘😘😊
The thing about Greece that most tourists may not be aware of is that you only get ever get to see half of it. Athens is the ancient cultural centre but Constantinople is the medieval and Renaissance capital, now sadly in Turkey. So, unlike other European countries that developed around a single centralised region, Greece's history & cultural heritage have been split in two.
Congratulations. That was the most enjoyable and beautiful video of your adventure. As an Australian of Greek descent, it made me weep with happiness. I recalled my first pilgrimage way back in 1991. It took my breath away then, and watching your video, it takes breath now. I will be booking my flights to return shortly! 😊 Enjoy your travels. May they they be safe and happy, I look forward to seeing more. 😊
Awesome, thank you so much for the wonderful comment ☺️ So happy you will be returning shortly! Have a safe and fantastic trip! Thanks for making our day 💜
The evil eye is a thing which exists in Greece since antiquity, or even the bronze age, more than 2,000 years before the Turks appear in this region. The ancient Greeks called it "vaskania" and there're references on this in the works of Aristotle, Hesiod, Callimachus, Plato, Plutarch, Heliodorus, etc. The earliest known belief in the power of the evil eye appears on Chalcidian drinking vessels, from Chalkidice Greece.

We will be in Athens for Three days starting August 24th. Your video was fantastic, and we hope we can see at least some of these great historical sites. Unfortunately, due to an injury, not sure how much of the difficult walking we will be able to do. Stairs are especially a challenge. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Just a small fact for 22:33 in the vid, most of those pieces are not away for safekeeping, they’re actually in the UK! So if you go there, you may see many of these artifacts irl! :) PS. Lovely videoooo!! 💖🌸
Another great start to another fantastic series, can't wait to see more of Greece through your eyes, first impression looks incredible my friends ps Tommy brother are you wearing the gloves you bought in Vietnam?

Hello, new viewer here! Thank you for your beautiful and informative video. May I please know what month of the year you were traveling in? The weather looks wonderful (as a southeast Asian who’s used to humid hot weather) 😅
Hello 👋 We traveled there in March but we think April would be perfect depending on where you want to go. Let us know if you have any other questions 👍
I love your video you guys did a great job. You need to try the Bougatsa with coffee so good I spent 6 months there unforgatable. I had the best time of my life... enjoy the greek Islands I look forward to seeing more. p.s. I hope you go see Santorini you will see the beauty
You show a date of Jul 16, 22, but I am wondering when you filmed your time in Athens, month wise. We are visiting there in the late fall and you are wearing coats and scarves in July? Was that really when you were there? Liked the video - can't wait to go there!
"ah, same as in turkey, so cool" not that cool really, reason why so many thigs are the same is cause half of turkey used to be greece. not a pleasant story.
Hey guys! We just found your channel (just binge watched your Vietnam series). Really enjoyed the videos and the filming. Some cool camera angles and transitions. What camera gear do you use?
Try a bogatsa (custard+filo-dough pie, common Greek breakfast item - ask for sugar and cinnamon to be added). Also worth trying a galaktompoureko (sweet milk+lemon+honey pie - sold as a personal slice or as a whole tray). And if you want some vegan dishes you wont find elsewhere try: "fakesh" (lentin soup), "fasolada" (tomato and beans soup, the "national Greek food"), "horta" (boiled wild greens), "kolokythokeftedes" (zuccinni-balls), "Loukoumades" (honey glazed deep fried dough with sprinkled almonds), and a good "horiatiki" (Greek salad, but real local style, not the same as that found in the US -- basically it doesn't have lettuce, and has real feta and olive oil). Or ditch this vegan fad, and try a real souvlaki or gyros with meat :-)
Thanks for the great feedback! You will have an awesome trip! We just walked our way around Athens. Let us know if you have any other questions. Feel free to email us 👍
Hi, Athenian here. For staying and sightseeing in the center I'd mix walking, the metro and taxis (they are not very expensive in Greece- you can download a taxi app for more peace of mind). Finding parking in the center and near some important sights can be hard. For going outside the city probably it's best to rent a car.
@@GorgeousGeorge97 Uhm..I live here so you trying to correct me is very patronizing. 21 degrees in January might have happened once but December to February is always cold. This year it even snowed in March so...
It looks kind of chilly there what month did you go? My husband and I are planning a trip to Greece next Sept wondering how to pack? I am so excited to go! Watching videos like this gets me excited for our trip. Athens is defiantly one of the Greek Islands that is on my bucket list.
In September the weather is still hot, mostly like in summer time. You have to pack mostly summer clothes and a light jacket or some jeans. Don't forget your swimsuit. The Athenian Riviera is very interesting.
Hey guys, just watched your vid on Athens. We’re going in about 6 weeks. I take it the £30 euro ticket to see the Acropolis is worth it. Also, did you do any Bus tours?
@@tonymultani If you come in August and go to islands and beaches (and Athens), pack light summer clothes: shorts, lots of t-shirts, swimsuits, flip-flops, comfortable walking sandals or shoes, long light trousers and a couple of long-sleeved shirts and a jumper for the evening, in case it gets a bit windy. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. You can buy those everywhere. I usually pack a warm jumper when I take a ferry, because the air-conditioning inside can be arctic. Most hotels don't offer beach towels, so maybe pack one. If you spend your holidays next to a beach, you can just walk around in a swimsuit and flip-flops all day and even go for lunch in a taverna in it ☺️
Hi there I got a question you mentioned it is cold what month the you went to Greece ? I’m planing to go at the end of March and I wanted to figure it out what to bring to my trip
Well no body replied … Now that I came back March is such a nice time to go to Athens a little chill in the morning and evening but nice mid days around 68o Santorini it was cold and windy and all restaurants were closed in Oía. Plan to lodge in Thira and do not pay private transportation from the airport they charge us €90 used local transportation very chip and easy to use. Loved Greece and their people everywhere speak English and Spanish and remember Sunday everything is closed

In Greece don't cheers with a coffee. It's a bad luck because coffee is also drinking in funerals!
Good to know! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for sharing your great explore the vegan feta.,don't think so , it's not for all of us , love this video. To a great life.👍🙂🙂
Always loving your videos! Could you share what song was played on minute 16? Thank u!

♥

Thank you for sharing & you did amazing job on the videos! We are visiting Athens in Sep. How did you get around in Athens? What do you recommend?
Thanks for the great feedback! You will have an awesome trip! We just walked our way around Athens. Let us know if you have any other questions. Feel free to email us 👍
I'll be there in September too ... first time!
Hi, Athenian here. For staying and sightseeing in the center I'd mix walking, the metro and taxis (they are not very expensive in Greece- you can download a taxi app for more peace of mind). Finding parking in the center and near some important sights can be hard. For going outside the city probably it's best to rent a car.
you upload your winter trip in Athens in the middle of July?
How did you get to all the view points ruins, museum walk or taxi__??Is it easy to get lost_?
We walked everywhere. Very easy to get around! Download google maps for offline maps and you will be fine if you ever get lost 👍
you went to fallafelas? thats my fav spot for fallafel. Did you like it?
Still the best falafel as we have ever had 🤤 We can see why it’s your favorite! Thanks for sharing
Hello, Which month did you go?
This was in March 👍
Awesome vegan food. I have an issue with gluten, i wonder they serve rice.
Greece is cold???? when were you there?????
Probably winter. We have a heatwave at the moment..typical greek summer. But in winter it gets really cold, below zero, especially in the north.
@@GorgeousGeorge97 Uhm..I live here so you trying to correct me is very patronizing. 21 degrees in January might have happened once but December to February is always cold. This year it even snowed in March so...
@@alx_gr1 τι έλεγε το βλημα αγάπη μου;;;; ευτυχώς του διέγραψαν το σχόλιο ! 💖
It looks kind of chilly there what month did you go? My husband and I are planning a trip to Greece next Sept wondering how to pack? I am so excited to go! Watching videos like this gets me excited for our trip. Athens is defiantly one of the Greek Islands that is on my bucket list.
We were in Athens in March. We loved the cooler weather. You’re gonna have a awesome time! Thanks for the love!
In September the weather is still hot, mostly like in summer time. You have to pack mostly summer clothes and a light jacket or some jeans. Don't forget your swimsuit. The Athenian Riviera is very interesting.
Thank you all for your responds. We got our hotels all booked. It’s becoming more and more a reality. I can’t wait.
Hi! Which month did you go?
Where did you buy the falafels? Were they vegan?
Hey guys, just watched your vid on Athens. We’re going in about 6 weeks. I take it the £30 euro ticket to see the Acropolis is worth it. Also, did you do any Bus tours?
It would have been helpful if you had named the places you ate.
Where was the fellafel place?
Hi! What month was this?
What month were you there?
What month was it?
March 👍
When did you went there because isn’t it hot temperature there right now
Today it was 40°C!! :)
@@topowwow I’m going to Greece next month that’s why I was wondering what to pack 🤔🤔
If you spend your holidays next to a beach, you can just walk around in a swimsuit and flip-flops all day and even go for lunch in a taverna in it ☺️
@@topowwow thank you very much 🙏
Hi there I got a question you mentioned it is cold what month the you went to Greece ? I’m planing to go at the end of March and I wanted to figure it out what to bring to my trip
Well no body replied … Now that I came back March is such a nice time to go to Athens a little chill in the morning and evening but nice mid days around 68o Santorini it was cold and windy and all restaurants were closed in Oía. Plan to lodge in Thira and do not pay private transportation from the airport they charge us €90 used local transportation very chip and easy to use. Loved Greece and their people everywhere speak English and Spanish and remember Sunday everything is closed
Beautiful videos. Please dont compare Greece (the blessed land) and Turkey... Civilization should not be compared to anything else
Most turkey used to be greek tho. 80% of their artifacts is greek
May I know the name of the hotel that you stayed at Athens. Thanks
