    I've thought about doing something similar myself and I've just finished a welding course through TAFE so I'll be following the build. Just remember, the welds don't have to look good to be effective and an angle grinder can make most things look better.

    Great fun getting out of your comfort zone all the answers are on U Tube
    Being a draftsman I nut everything out on a computer in 3D right down to the details, there’s no guesswork
    With that skill I built an ALI boat and trailer and just finished a whole house except plumbing and wiring, every day your doing stuff you have never done b4
    I would get a frame welded up and rivet Ali sheet to the frame similar to T Van
    Looking forward to the series

    You need to keep an eye on the U bolts once they have been off. The spring pack will settle over time, especially on bad roads. After doing this on my caravan I used to tighten the nuts every week or so. Eventually they stop moving.

    So, I had a very similar 8x5 that I had planned to do something similar with for nearly 6 months. But with Covid, a lot of people started selling off camper trailers with damaged tents on top. I sold my trailer for more than I payer for it (5yrs ago) and bought a camper for less than I sold mine for. Then through the tent out. The advantage here is it came with water tank and pump, off road suspension, over ride brakes, tailgate kitchen and gas/jerry holders.
    Still in the build and will be taking it to BRB as well.

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did think about doing the same in regards to the trailer itself but decided to just stick with what I had. Only time will tell if I’m right or not.

Good luck mate 👍👍

    Im slowly working on an old Traidies Trailer that I picked up a few years back. Had 31's when I got it with steel rims, have put the same wheels and tyres onto it that are on my Pajero so I have extra spares on the trailer when using it. Maybe something to think of, same wheels and tyres you run on the car (when it arrives). My plans with storage is similar with a false floor but not the full height of the trailer body (My side walls are taller) with a fridge and water tank inside but over the axle and batter over the front. I hope to have a spare on the back (Doesn't have a drop down tail gate) to balance the weight. I'm going to make hatches in the floor to store things under it and access things like the water tank and pumps but still be able to carry things like fire wood, tent, camp chairs etc on top strapped down.

  • @BenMitro
    @BenMitro ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great project! You have around 350 kg of payload to play with (750kg all up weight allowed for an unbraked trailer, and allowing 400kg for the empty trailer). This means you want to think carefully about what you put in it (stay legal) and also where you will put it - for stability. Robert Pepper has a few great videos on trailers and towing you may want to have a look at.
    I have the exact same single axle trailer, except mine has brakes and is rated at 1400kg (I think the difference is the brakes, tyres and springs), so I've started building it as a camper trailer...unfortunately, I'm too old to do much these days so the project has stagnated. Maybe I'll simplify it to something I can achieve?
    In any case, watching you build this may spur me on! 🥴

  • @sdrhodes82
    @sdrhodes82 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question : Won't the weight of the springs/on the springs damage the axle once it's under load or if overload once you have put the axle beneath the leaf springs? Isn't that the reason the axle is above the spring and not below? I don't claim to know, genuine question...

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s the same both above and below for stress on the axel.
      Where it becomes difficult is some axels have camber built into them so it will throw that out.

      Max weight of the trailer is currently set at 750kg based on the axel load limit.
      The trailer construction is too for 1.6t but it’s a grey area in the law due to there being no real regulation on it.
      It just gets classified as “ home made “. As long as the axel , tyre and rims meet regs you’re in the clear ( in Victoria)

    Ummm, did you just literally flip that axle over? As in the mounting plate that was on the bottom of the axle is now on the top? Axles are bowed with the high point in the middle, so that when you add load the wheels are straight. Flipping the axle the other way leads to poor handling and premature tyre and bearing wear. Probably should have welded new plates and kept the axle the right way up.
