  • EDITED NOTE: HAVING FINALY LOOKED AT INSTRUCTIONS FOUND THAT THIS PRODUCT WASN’T DESIGNED FOR MY MSR POCKET ROCKET BUT FOR THOSE STOVES WHERE THE BURNER SITS LOW DOWN ON FLOOR…..STILL THINK IT EXPENSIVE FOR THE AVERAGE CAMPSITE BASED USER BUT MY THOUGHTS NOT THAT RELEVANT ON THIS OCCASION
Having impulsively purchased an ‘MSR Heat Reflector With Windscreen’ I used it over a couple of camping trips and then decided to give my first thoughts about it!
This video doesn’t show it in use but does reflect on the product with an answer to would I have bought it if I’d seen a review.
On this trip I’m using my MSR Elixir2 tent Cloud Up2 tent, riding the Honda CB500X.

Think you need to try this with a remote cannister stove, or MSR multi fuel stove ie Whisperlite/Dragonfly/XGK... you actually get this wind sheild reflector with those stoves. It is VERY effective with those stoves. It is NOT intended for use with a cannister top stove such as a Pocket Rocket...no wonder you thought it not that good 🤔
You've also got it upside down 😟

Hi Andrew, I appreciate what you're saying about the wind deflector, but it's been around for a long time now, and is designed for use with the the remote burner i.e. whisperlite, as the instructions suggested. Their products are produced with mountaineers in mind, who've been using them for decades now MSR = Mountain Safety Research. Just a pointer for future reference.

I aggree with you a 100%.I bought this thinking there was a little more to it than beefed up tin foil and if this is designed for a certain stove,it should say that on front of the package.I like MSR but this doesn't 'reflect'on how good their gear is.

Your using it on the wrong type of stove I'm afraid, should be using it on a type of stove like the alpkit koro etc. Also that cut out should be on the bottom for the remote gas canister. I have this windshield and works a treat with the koro. Although like you say it's expensive for what it is, many better shields out there but not as light as this one. 🙂

This is not for a stove that fits on top of a gas canister, as it says on the front of the package, it's for remote stoves, these are connected via a small tube, the stove being low to the ground. I've been looking for a something like this for my remote stove, not just as a wind shield, but to stop grass burning underneath the stove when it's dry.

This is designed only for petrol or liquid multi fuel stoves like the MSR Dragonfly or the MSR WhisperLite as they were remote burning stoves.
This was never designed for normal isobutane gas canister stoves as most are not remote stoves and have the gas canister underneath so the build up heat during prolonged use on an isobutane gas canister stove can cause explosions and is only designed for “remote” stove’s fuel containers - liquid fuel in pressurised fuel bottle or for gas stoves that connect the gas canister by a long fuel tube to the stove.
MSR now make the MSR LOWDOWN Remote Gas Canister Adaptor that allows you to convert any standard gas canister stove (gas canister sits underneath stove) into a remote gas canister stove (gas canister attached to long metal tube and gas stove screws onto a base that connects the base legs with the other end of the metal tube.
Please never use the windscreen on standard gas canister on bottom of stove types as it could cause explosions if heat is allowed to build up in the gas canister.
The MSR Lowdown remote canister stove adaptor attachment would make using the windshield much safer on gas stoves.
