Gosh you are so incredible, not to mention professional. I appreciate everything you do and you've convinced me to choose CAT. Thank you.

Unity has an extra setting for animations, it has the file name separate from the clip name. It names the clip as clip001 by default, but if you want it to come in with the clip already named, you need to save the 3dsMax file as the name you want to have for the clip, then in the .fbx Export, Extra Options tab, check "Use scene name". Then when you import the file to Unity, you can skip that extra step of naming the clip. This helps a lot when you have animations that are shared between characters, if you need to copy the file then you don't have to re name the clip every time.

Hello i hope you very well i have a question i have more than one bone but the unreal engine only shows the group with bones not the whle model what could be the reason for this?

  • @widam
    @widam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

nice, but seems that 3DsMax 2021 has a serious bug exporting FBX, somehow the bones are torn in Unreal, seems there is a threat about that in autodesk forums, but still not solved, I tried for entire day, different models, from scratch, different versions of fbx, and 2021 don't work, the same character in Max 2017, goes fine and Unreal loads all without problems.

I am following your tutorial, but when I export to FBX, I get this warning-
One or more objects in the scene has local axes that are not perpendicular to each other (non-orthogonal).
The FBX plug-in only supports orthogonal (or perpendicular) axes and will not correctly import or export any transformations that involve non-perpendicular local axes.
Do you know how I can fix this?

hey i found a bug to this approach. Apparently catrig is not friendly if you parent the bone like this to the pelvis. Once you create a new absolute layer the pelvis will snap off from its original position.

Will you be setting up a character blueprint with state machines and blend spaces?

Everytime I exported a perfectly correct animation to a FBX file, it inmediately gets jerky bone movements that it didn't have before. Anyone has the same problem?
EDIT: I solved this simply by upgrading my version of 3ds Max (from 2017 to 2020). It seems that it was a faulty version of the FBX exporter.

Have you tried to export stepped keys with CAT into Unity? It works fine with bones..

My meshes are squares.. (Voxel art) and when I import my mesh with the skeletal it looks weird... it starts smoothing itself but when I dont import with skeleton it looks good...pls help

So as long as I add this root bone before I start animating or adding animation layers I should be ok right? Or do i need to save a seperate file with the root bone and no animations and use that file to add all the animations clips to it.?

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Both of the things you said work fine. Generally you want to have rig done before you start animating anything (you can add stuff later but if it's possible, it's better that the rig is done).
About the animation. I usually keep clean/separate file of just a rig without any animations, but that's just a thing of a workflow. You don't have to do it like that. CAT gives you a lot of options, you don't have to actually follow any specific workflow, just do it how you like.

Can you export the cat rig as a separate obj?I kind of wanted the cat rig to be the actual mesh itself

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes you can. Even the standard obj export should work without any problems.
But there's another way if it doesn't. Create new object, convert it to Editable Poly and attach all the CAT objects to it. Then delete to original object and you have your CAT rig as a separated mesh.

Thanks for the reply, Can I request a tutorial from you? have you tried using CAT to do facial animation? If you could, it would be great if you can show us how to.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yea, I want to do a CAT facial animation tutorial in the future. The problem is I already have quite a lot of videos I would like to make, but not enough time to make them :D. Although I make them as fast as I can :).

No worries, every video you post is very helpful.I've been shying away from learning how to do rigging and animation because they look complicated and pretty hard to understand, but your videos are very helpful in understanding how to go about them in an approachable and easy to follow way so thanks for that.I'd be doing some creatures soon and your videos are god send so yeah keep at it and looking forward to learning more stuff from you in the future.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank You. Always glad to see when the videos actually help.

Is there something wrong with the Axis conversion option in the 3dsMax FBX Export menu?
I noticed that you instead changed the Z axis orientation manually in the UnReal import menu.
I started watching your videos recently and subscribed to the chanel. Your videos are really well explained and very useful. Thanks a lot for sharing your good work! You rock, man!

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Alex. Thank You!
I don't think there is anything wrong with Axis conversion. I have just done it that way, but it doesn't matter as far as I know. Feel free to do it any way it works :)

Hi Milos! Could you please tell me is it possible to export rigged CAT model with averything: bones, skin, controllers and constraints from one 3ds max file to another?

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, just use File -> Import -> Merge

    • @ИльяКовейша
      @ИльяКовейша 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@ thank you! BTW is there any explanation on how to set bones controllers (using wich allows to control bones position indirectly) in some of your videos?

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

When you select a CAT bone, right click and hit "Add Gizmo" on the left. Make sure you are in a Setup mode of CAT, not Animation mode (it's the Play/Stop button in Layer Manager).
