I can’t believe the previous owners did such a shabby job with their renovations and at least you are putting it all right now. The house will be amazing once you are finished!! I would have got someone in to do the job hats off to you both for persevering ❤❤
You have definitely started from the top down! There won't be an inch of your house that you don't know. One consolation is the house will be perfect! You have both worked so hard xx
Shade, I’m with you on everything you said. We are renovating our cottage and it’s been a nightmare but it’ll all be worth it in the end….. so people keep telling me. Good luck to you both, really enjoying your vlogs and ideas will look amazing when finished. ❤
I fell through the ceiling in our hallway during our loft conversion. I did everything you mention like walking on joists only or on boards only but it took one second as I spotted our baby crawl for the first time outside in the garden and I stepped sideways in excitement 😂. I also appreciated I had some decent upper body strength as I pulled myself back up and limped back down the scaffolding.
And now I'm trying to convince my husband to help me climb up on the extension roof and then further onto the dormer roof to see if I can find the vented tile. Gulp! X
Amazing accomplishment. I’m not a home owner but living vicariously through your house reno adventures and discoveries. What you put out you will receive in return so helpful people are there waiting to assist. Not only what you do but who you are in sharing the knowledge. Take your time and remember to breathe and smile throughout. Loving it all. So proud of you both 👍🏾❤👍🏾❤ Just had a thought 💭 Should you ever decide to move on, whoever purchases this house would be getting a solid house 😊
Oh wow you are such DIY troopers. I’ve been living in a reno for 7 years and we have had to take down wet insulation as well. Not a nice job, but you did it. 🎉❤
Unfortunately it takes weeks for the dust to settle, it drove me insane. I love your videos, I have kids your age and I have done DIY sice before you were born but I have learned so much from you x
So sorry to hear your woes! Shame on "c..." tradespeople, they have no conscience. It makes me so angry. At least you can have a nicely insulated roof now
Smart girl with your PPE! I had a similar situation in my home this year, I had to remove 174 bags of wet insulation and it took about 90 days of running the dehumidifier to dry everything out, But it’s finally dry! Research the replacement insulation. I’m in the US; I am able to get TAX CREDITS for the replacement cost. Stay strong, God bless!
My husband tripped & I saw half a leg & a moccasin foot through our landing ceiling , when we did our insulation & yes luckily our next project was to have the ceiling done 😂😂, well done shade for all your hard work . People left us drama 😢 it is quite common 😬👍🏻🇬🇧xxx p.s our house was built 1960, weeks ago moved in it 2000. Moved out of it 2023. Into a brand new home 🥰x
I beefed up my attic insulation last year. Ugh it was brutal but it took me about 3 days to complete it. I had “blown in” loose insulation but it wanted “batt” insulation like what you had. Thankfully my attic was in perfect condition and was vented outside. So basically instead of removing the loose because it was so thin I was able to lay the new one right over between the joist and perpendicular for the most coverage as advice. The materials was about $1000 but to have a company come out would have been about $3-5k and they would have just topped up the blown in. I didn’t want that. So after finishing my R valve was well over 14 inches instead of the previous 4 inches because the loose insulation settled over the years. The work is. Not east especially when doing it DIY. But i will never have to do it again and it improves the warmth in the house.
that's brilliant to hear. you saved yourself so much money too. our house has been particularly cold since we removed the insulation but I ordered the new lot yesterday and it's coming tomorrow. just need to work up the courage to get back in the loft and re-fit it!
Living for these reno videos!! 😍 Can’t wait for you to talk through how to prep and paint all the fresh plaster as I had to recently have my kitchen ceiling replastered from a leak upstairs and I haven’t attempted sealing or painting yet xx
Hello Shade y’all are doing an amazing job with the renovations, but it’s going to turnout great and it’s going to be worth it in the end. GOD BLESS and much LOVE. 🙏🏾🥰💖💯💫
When I grow up I want to be like you 😅 (I’m in my 50’s 🤣🤣) you are so inspiring and incredibly focused, pragmatic, determined and everything else in between!!! Love you sharing this information and it has got me thinking about my home and if everything is okay. I rent the house and I see things that I am now questioning. I have a mouldy bathroom and now I’m not sure if it is ventilated properly 😮 Going to contact LL for more info 👍🏾
your right dont go for trends go for what you like. Just finished mine took 3yrs but so worth it. Love watchig you. got so many hints and tips that has saved me a lot of money. thank you.
i love your videos so much! truely comforting to see someone dealing with day to day house maintence🥰 i watched your organise the kicthen video recently (an old video) and i started doing mine with you. truely an inspiration x
We have been in our home for 16 years and didnt have an extractor fan in bathroom and it was fine when we recently pulled it all out and refitted we didnt think to put in an extractor fan😮 im worried now that we should have. Our house is also very old and we have alot of ventilation that is on not on purpose like from the eaves and poor insulation etc maybe this contributed to providing airflow and stopped damp.
That’s probably why it’s been fine as the hot air can technically escape but maybe have a look, have a feel of the insulation and particularly any corners moisture could be trapped xx
So sorry you've had such a fraught time but you both seem to have coped with it amazingly well. I'm amazed at your never ending cheerfulness and good humour! Yes, ok, I'm sure you're not always feeling like that but you're doing a lot better than most of the rest of us! 😁
Sorry to hear about the latest issues. One question, did you get any sort of survey, structural or full survey done prior to purchase? They may be some sort of recourse against the company who did the survey or solicitor. You will wonder how you did without the dehumidifier.
Sorry to hear you had such problems with damp, but glad it’s getting sorted now. I have a damp issue with my flat although it’s only 8 years old and the opposite. No windows in the bathroom and the insulation is so good the moisture has no where to go! Looking at a dehumidifier for the winter as I don’t really want to sit with windows open this time of year.
I feel your pain I left all my furniture in storage whilst all the messing work was done. Got quotes before the exchange happened. So the works started like 4 days of moving in. Slept on a fold up bed and lived in one room upstairs with the cat.
Ok I gotta say I refuse to do lofts I know everything I need to know about them but it’s just the thought of my tall self in that confined space 😂that I can’t cope with but next year I have to brave going up there and I’m boarding a section you have really taken away the fear and I will be tripling up the layers thank you and gurlllll well done
Shade u are amazing oh and Rob I know how much mess plastering makes the dust 😩 just as u have cleaned up it seams to appear again but it is worth it in the end just take your time and get it right to how u want it sending love to u and Rob 🏴💞🍾
Hopefully you may start to find now that when it's no longer humid and with new insulation your house may be slightly warmer? (although as you say you've learnt a lot!) I truly admire your resilience, i would have run far away and buried my head in the sand! 😅 You must feel proud! X
We have the same wardrobes. We stood them on 2x 4 and then for skirting around the bottom and then coved around the top so they look built in. We also sprayed mdf panels and put them on the edge so they matched the doors so all looks seamless Everyone comments on how expensive they look when in actual fact it all cost £900 We had the flisberget in light beige which we colour matched (funny taking a whole wardrobe door to dulux centre 😅) Some nice brushed brass handles too
If walls could talk. Previous home owners cut a lot of corners. I wonder if these jobs were permitted or inspected?Be safe. Hopefully, there will be no more surprises, but you never know. Stay safe. These things need reporting. So sad.😮😮 What is the black paper in the ceiling? Will you ever think about using the attic for living space? Are you planning to have insulation blown in?
Its been disappointing facing so many issues that didn't need to be issues but here we are. The black paper is roof felt it helps to waterproof the loft and more. We will just re-roll new insulation in I don't think blown in insulation is very common in the UK!
Woooo I’m on my 3rd year 😂doing up this house I made a huge list a plan what was priorities and because I was doing it solo and it had to be liveable for my family I did the quick makeover and then tackled each room and project and made sure to really do the cost down to the last nail and also have a contingency for every single room and be patient and wait for sales use discounts etc and to not suffer from burnout and to do it right the first time so I didn’t have to redo it at one point that meant waiting I think 16 months for a carpet runner for my stairs 👀 I’m now finished and will start again in jan 2025 because I want a custom corner sofa for like 5 grand and I would ideally like to fit new floor before it arrives and change my bathroom taps other than that it’s been a beautiful rollercoaster of emotions and just really honing my skills and saving and spending in large clumps I do think living in your home even if it’s just a few months whilst you unpack and living with your old stuff will tell you what style you want colours weather you want to swap out furniture etc and will actually save you wasting money and time
Oh my you are so brave doing that loft I go up our and come down as quick as I can did you find mice? That would spook me out had a wasp flying around last time I was up there crickty thought it was a bat! You would have heard the screaming from mars😂 agreed ceilings are a messy job had our whole lounge replanted we have the main bedroom to do yikes not looking forward to this 😢
Hahahaa! No nice but a lot of old mouse droppings. All got cleaned up. Worked out well in the end as now the loft isn’t as scary to me as when we first moved in 🤣
Thanks so much Shade- I have the same issue, my bathroom extractor fan just goes directly into the loft, not even a hose on it! Will get lap vents asap and look into the proper setup. Is the vent tile fitted by a roofer?
Glad to help! Yes will be a roofer that fits it - get a few quotes in and go with a good price & someone who you have a good gut feeling about. All the best!
Contrary to what you said this actually happened in my new build and the condensation was coming through the ceiling and caused a lot of water damage. It was traumatic and it was Christmas eve it got bad. 😢
I mean all credit to you, I would have paid someone to clear the loft, it looked messy! Are you like me, I hate spending money and there’s nothing visible to show for it? Mind you, you will feel the benefits when the house is toastie warm. Another job ticked off, well done. ( very jealous of your plasterer, he’s fab!)
Would really appreciate a demo on that ladder we have vaulted ceiling that we cannot paint it would be cost affective for us to buy one of these if the do what we require as to employ a painter it's 800 pounds!
Oh most likely! The ladder is brilliant. One day I will do the landing makeover and need to paint the top so it may come in handy then. Will make sure to document x

Dehumidifiers are amazing, I paid £259 for a Meaco and I couldn’t believe how much water is in it every morning and I’m in a little bungalow. They dry your washing too. But you won’t be doing that in the loft. 🤔 Agree with everyone else, you’re absolutely amazing with everything you do 😊

exactly :( really disappointing but we're learning as we go suppose!
You mentioned the person put the extractor fan in did it during your ensuite makeover couldn't you contact them and ask them to rectify
It was done before we moved in 😫 xx

Yes plastering & loft installation are the worst jobs to do...apart from maybe the drains/toilet 🤢 looking forward to the next job 😊

Honestlyyyy the hidden issues in this house 🤦🏽♀️
Your house will be so much better from these jobs, as back breaking as they are. . These arent glamorous jobs but they are necessary. Well done!
Exactly! Very necessary. We’re doing the hard work now and pretty will come later 😁
You need to get on to the company that did the survey, did not do a proper job. You need some compensation for the extra money you are paying out. Botch jobs originally done just to sell the house
