Going from a spring would do what other than greatly extend the time needed to make the sword and its also used metal. Damascus is nothing special. If a pattern welded sword is not done correctly, its a much weaker build than just going monosteel. This guy makes em to work.

Great video but I'm just wondering if I'm the one with visual issues or if everyone else is ignoring the fact that the sword is not black on both sides but dark purple on the sharp edge side. Everyone site I see selling the sword only has it completely black with the red pattern in the middle. Any reasons for this?

Love the way you wrap the handles on your swords. I noticed you have your supply of tatami mats again. . . Awesome! How do your swords endure blade to blade contact? Can they withstand the contact as in simulated battle?
Thanks Steve! I have not actually tried blade on blade contact yet. The hardest thing I have struck with my swords is either the bamboo peg I use to hold up the Tatami, or the sword stand itself. I know they are not exactly hard targets for swords, but they can cut those without any edge deformation. I plan on experimenting with different heat treats, to test strength and flexibility.
